I can't find them in my inventory - I did a search on 'crystal' - nothing comes up...
or did I drop them all?

Nope, they're in a separate tab under "Currency" which you can find in the base UI (You know, the tabs that say "Inventory, Craft Bag, CURRENCY, and Quickslots) and that come up when you press I (on PC).
