Bastian a tea-toatler or not?

Does Bastion dislike crafting wine/alcohol. And if so, isn't that a bug?

He likes going to taverns. As a houseguest he says he loves having a full wineskin. He tells me he dislikes cheese because it upsets his stomach. He didn't seem to care the one time I tried.

That [REDACTED] has never once told me in all our travels through Tamriel that he dislikes cheese. I had to find that out the hard way when I crafted 200 Port Hunding Cheese Fries at once while levelling provisioning. Clearly I need to have a word with houseguest Bastian.

I just crafted a Surilie Syrah Wine (the only thing I can make at this level) and got no change. However, I can only make one serving at a time, and when I was testing with cheese items I noticed that if I made a single serving of cheese his rapport didn't change, but if I put a point in the passive and made more than one at a time he disapproved. So not sure if that will be the same with alcohol.

The rapport changes for minor (nonsense) reasons are on a cooldown of 5 minutes.

But they don't always 'register' the action you took for some reason.

If you make 200 port hundings fries once every 5 minutes it should give you a -1 rapport once every 5 minutes. If the amount somehow is being counted that's a bug.

I didn't get a huge loss from the 200, it was still just -1. I hopped onto another character for testing, made 1 serving, no rapport loss. Put a point in the chef passive, made 20, rapport loss.

I just got on an alt and made a single carrot cheesecake. No rapport loss. A single cheese fries. No rapport loss. A single Alik'r Beets with Goat Cheese. Rapport loss. It's just weird.

I think this points to a huge missed opportunity when it came to developing these characters. I don't care that Bastion hate cheese or Mirri hates bugs because the rapport reduction is minimal. But what would be helpful and good to develop them as characters would be to have them explain these dislikes (and likes) as answers to "Tell me about yourself" dialogue option. This would be especially useful if these answers were random unless you recently lost or gained rapport. If your rapport recently increased or decreased, it should trigger the response that is related to the action that caused the change. It would make them seem more real and allow us to learn what we did to upset or please our new friends.

Agree with all of this. Our relationship with them just isn't organic enough. They have a whole three lines in response to "tell me about yourself" and three lines in response to "let's talk about our relationship" although at least those change when your rapport does. But their passive comments on the world, even when set to frequent, don't add much to their characterization. Mirri is also way more developed that Bastian in that she reacts a lot more to specific things.

Tell me about your damn pathological hatred for cheese before I put you in my house, Bastian. I walk past cooking fires all the time, maybe throw me a bone here?

Not all cheeses are equal, I guess. Cheesecake has a lot different texture and flavor than, say, a chunk of sharp cheddar cheese. Cheesecake isn't very cheeselike in my book.

Not true at all, they both have the same amount of dialogue responses to everything, and him reacting to cheese is just as bad as Mirri complaining about meerly looking at a bug or stepping near a boat lmao. I'm sorry but losing rapport because you touched a bug, not even looted it, is just very silly. The silliest.

Yeah, his cheese hatred and her bugs/boat thing are equally silly. I'm not going to tell you what you experienced, but in my gameplay, Bastian has not reacted to half as many things as Mirri. They both have generic comments on being in a city, fighting a boss, using ults, Psijic portals, scrying/digging etc. But:

She has specific dialogue for Daedric delves, my Daedric pet, Ashlander camps, the Vault of Moawita, the Vvardenfell scale model in the Library of Vivec, the Brass Fortress, she reacts to almost every museum collection in the game, she has two dailies that give her +125 rapport where he only has one, and she apparently even comments on you talking to Sotha Sil in quests (not experienced that one myself as I haven't done Summerset main with her in tow).

Bastian? He reacts to the Mages Guild, Artaeum, and Eyevea. He doesn't blink at talking to the Ritemaster of the Psijic Order and he doesn't care about any museum collection, even the Vault of Moawita, which is weird because you think as a man who says he loves history and magic he'd be all over Psijic relics. He said nothing about the Antiquarians' Circle, and he tells you he plays the lute but he had no reaction to the Bards College!

Unless my Bastian just randomly goes mute where other people's are chatty (which is frankly totally possible because you never know sometimes with ESO) he just feels underdeveloped in comparison.

Everything you just listed he reacts too as well or has equivalent reactions somewhere else including the pets. So this seems like an inexperience thing or maybe even a bug or bad rng. As they both have equivalent reactions with only a few truly unique reactions that only one of them acknowledges, this is usually specific enemy types relevant to their character and or morals, Mirri reacting to Ashlander camps on Dunmer specific things, Bastian reacting to Bandit camps and Theives/Vampires/Breton things. Or specific locations and towns relevant to them like how Bastian reacts to going to anywhere in High Rock, while Mirri is either silent or uses the same generic dialogue she has for every city while he reminisces about the memories he has of the area or talks about his foster family or his annoying step brother lol.

Go anywhere around Reachmen, or around locations with people who are engaging in conflicts with them, Bastian has dialogue, whereas again Mirri is completely silent on them. Mirri reacts to artifacts because that's who her character is, she loves archaeology, relics are her thing, not his, moreso actual pure magic, the mystical aspects of it is his thing, but she doesn't react to nearly as many magical things or locations that he does, and that is the same for both of them. Equivalent lines, few unique ones. So lets not start this meme.

Storywise however they BOTH could use more. As of now both stories are pretty weak.

    Mirri: Find my mum
    Bastian: Find my sis

Albeit Bastian's story is a bit more interesting and still leaves a lot of questions about him, and i'm still wondering how a good boi like him is dressed in fullbody tats, but they both still need more.

Does he really? He doesn't do any of that for me. I've been all over Blackwood, Glenumbra, Stormhaven, Wrothgar, Summerset, and the Reach with him, and all I get is "this place brings back memories" in Wayrest. I've had him with me 80% of the time since Blackwood dropped, for at least four hours a day, and maxed his rapport four or five days in. He's never reminisced about his family, Quistley, nada. He made a comment about dragons once, and once asked if people become cultists because they want to watch the world burn. That's literally been it. And his reactions have always been set to frequent. I've had Mirri out the other 20% of the time and she talks constantly about all manner of things.

So...I don't know what's up with my Bastian, but you'll just have to take my word for it that he is the very blandest. I mean, I'm glad to hear that other people are experiencing all this characterization, but for me it's the total opposite. It's quite possible his dialogue RNG just hates me, but if so it's been hating me solidly since the chapter came out.

Rng, because I for one never heard him even mention dragons and i've mostly used him too lmao, then you have other people saying he talks a lot while mirri is mostly silent. So it seems everyone is experiencing different things. For me Mirri has mostly made the same comments and has had no unique dialogue in any of the cities i've visited with her thus far. Her dialogue with most of the enemy types has also been generic, while Bastan has commented on specific bandits and cultist. But perhaps I am fighting the wrong enemies with her. Even did theives guild and dark brotherhood stuff with her. Other than the getting angered by killing and the "master thief" comment, that's all she had to say.

I also can't for the life of me get Mirri to say anything when entering an inn (unless she just doesn''t have dialogue for it) while Bastian will comment something every single time he's near a campfire or fireplace. But i've heard from some that she does, so again, poor rng I guess.

Honestly I give it a few weeks or even a month before kinks with the companions get ironed out.

Well tbh Mirri's character just seems bland but I wonder if additional voice lines will be released later. Bastian seems to have more there (you dislike cheese why?) but maybe Mirri does and we just don't see it.

However, that also runs the risk of not being able to get the same voice actor and ZOS paying to re-voice the ENTIRE character.
