"Your companion cannot use their ultimate right now"

I have companion auto ult set to off, so that I can command Bastian to ult, because as far as I've seen he hardly ever uses it himself. Yet whenever I press Y in combat (and his ult is full of course) it gives me this message. He won't ult on world bosses, at dolmens, public dungeon bosses, nada. What am I missing? Is it just that I'm pressing Y while he's doing something else and the action doesn't queue or override his current animation? How am I supposed to keep a close enough eye on him to press it only when he's standing still?

Also, when his ult is full and I use a wayshrine, teleport, or put him away to pull out my merchant/banker for a second, his ult resets to 0. Is that intended? It kinda sucks. His ult is basically useless to me.

I was running dolmens with him yesterday and he was using his ultimate all the time. I'm not sure what triggers it, but I do know that Bastian has a melee ultimate so there may be some 'distance' criteria that needs to be met before he will use the ultimate. Since I have him set as a healer, unless an enemy is in his face, he won't use it. So even if I were to try and manually trigger his ultimate, if an enemy was not close to him, it would not cast because the distance criteria was not met.

As for the ultimate being full and disappearing... running dolmens yesterday he maintained a full ultimate through a wayshrine in the same zone. I think what you are seeing OP, is when you leave one zone to go to another, then he loses his ultimate points. And yes, if you unsummon him, it's to be expected he would lose his ultimate... he's being 'dismissed'.

I just made another post about this... my companion is losing ultimate all the time. From one zone to another, leaving a dungeon in the same zone... could be sitting at 500 but then goes down to nothing. It does seem pretty useless especially when you’ve had to grind to get to level 20.

Thanks for the info, I'll try giving him a melee weapon to see if I can get it to trigger properly. I only ever saw him use it once on his own since he unlocked it, but as you said I've had him set up as a healer so perhaps he just hasn't been in range.

I guess his ult resetting when unsummoned makes sense, although that's annoying considering when you're doing public dungeons and such you inevitably need to bank/sell and you can't have him out at the same time. I don't understand why it resets when we travel...my ult doesn't go anywhere, so what's his story? I'll check on whether it happens in the same zone or just across different zones.

Having to build his ult again all the time only for him to never use it has been really underwhelming, but maybe I just haven't been using him right, who knows.

IKR. I mean usually it's our pet that is dismissed for the merchant or banker, so why does the companion has to be dismissed when we call up our other Assistants? We can have pet and companion out at the same time... Companion should stay at the expense of our pet when we summon merchant and banker imo. Grrrrrr.

Mirri has a ranged ultimate, and yet whenever I command her to use it, she never does. I always get the very same message too.

Can't tell if it's bugged, or it's another problem entirely.

Yeah, and Bastian's ult is an AOE, I don't see why I can't ask him to trigger it even if he's far from an enemy. I drop my storm atronach on chests all the time.

Okay, so it's the range that seems to be the issue for him refusing to use his ult. I had to equip him with a sword and shield and then I could get it to trigger by pressing Y. So he might as well not have one if he's geared as a ranged healer or DPS...good to know.

I was able to use wayshrines to move around within the same zone without resetting his ult, but porting to a guildmate or to a different zone resets it to zero. His ult also resets to zero when I walk into or out of a public dungeon. I don't really understand the reason for this.
