Do you have the same companion out all the time when you turn them in?

Fighters guild dailies are the dolmens aren't they? My companion is getting tons of XP from the dolmens, especially with a scroll active. I get the XP while fighting at the Dolmen, not while turning in the quest. Are you just watching for the XP during quest turn-in? That's just for the fighters guild though. The other two guilds may be different.

Well, because turning in dailies just doesn't give them any XP.

Have you considered that your friend has done more dailies than you have over the course of having his companion?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but:

Combat Exp raises your Companion's Level

Doing Fighters Guild Dailies raises the Companion's Fighter Guild skill line and Mirri's rapport

My rapport for Bastian is horribly inconsistent and I'm so frustrated with the process. Yesterday I got rapport from reading two books and nothing else. NOTHING ELSE.

What activities are you doing and how are you tracking his rapport? Did you do any Mages Guild dailies for him?

Yes... turning in guild quests ONLY raise your guild skill line, it does not award ANY individual companion XP. You only gain Companion XP from direct combat. Rapport is another thing entirely, and rapport does raise... I believe (correct me if I'm wrong) but Mirri gains rapport from Fighter's Guild quests and Bastian gains rapport from Mage's guild quest turn-ins.

Scrying also raises Rapport with Bastian while Excavating raises Rapport with Mirri.

Mage's guild, scrying, helping people, reading books, taking him to Eyevea, finding psyjic portals, taking him to Artaeum...and I track by watching the lower left corner to see if I get the green indicator of "yay, I like you!". It's not popping as much as it should according to what I've read. A friend already has Mirri as a houseguest and I can't get Bastian to toss me the next part of his quest line. If I could kill him I would.

If you are on PC/Mac, I highly suggest either Improved Companion Rapport Information (which prints gains to chat) or CompanionInfo (which displays current rapport and combat levels along with recent gains as an info bar on the screen). I use both together without issue.

Many of the rapport-granting activities have cooldowns, like visiting places they like (and Eyevea/Artaeum share a cooldown). Some of those cooldowns can be up to 20 hours, as the collections ones have for Mirri. (You can take her to the Brass Fortress and to various completed DLC collections like Kari's Hit List and the Vault of Moawita, but you will only get rapport every 20 hours for that. Taking her to a Daedric public dungeon or delve can be done every 30 minutes, though.)

Mages Guild dailies should award 125 rapport to Bastian for completing them. But he must be out when you turn them in, and companions have a nasty habit of despawning (or failing to respawn) even at high rapport when you go swimming or port somewhere. It is very easy for me to miss a companion disappearing if I'm not actively checking.

Unfortunately I've also found watching the native loot history to be fairly unreliable, especially as it's temporary. That's why I highly suggest add-ons. If you don't have access to them, or prefer not to use them, using the command /script d(GetActiveCompanionRapport()) in chat should spit the number out at you. I would use that to double check that you've gotten the rapport for the things he should be giving rapport for, keeping in mind that many activities do have a cooldown and those cooldowns vary depending on the activity in question.

    1. if you are on PC, get the companion add on so you can track what ZoS didn't bother to let you see: rapport numbers, health, etc.
    2. 2nd quest will not kick in on Bastian until you reach 2750.
    3. all the activities you are doing with him, if he is active on your bar and out, should be giving you rapport, so if they are not then the rapport indicator or the companion might be bugged, but you won't know if you don't see actual numbers.
