I was thinking about this the other day. A good idea which would make it better on both sides, and make the vestige seem like their brain actually works, would be to change the question to "What do you know about blah blah blah?" It frames the question better in a way that doesn't seem like there's any brain damage.

Of course there's some caveats, like asking lyris who she is, so it gets a little bit more difficult from there to pose a better question. But all in all its a good idea in most cases.

"Who are you again?" -Vestige, to Lyris"

Lyris, the person I sacrificed to defeat Molag Bal. I don't think the Vestige has brain damage, the player just seems to remember events that never took place.

But, if she's THERE, how do you know you actually DID what you think you did?

It's a mess from a RP perspective. Just try to think of it as the Vestige being purposefully naive for some higher reason.

From an RP perspective, I have separate characters that are my "canon" characters for each chapter. So RP wise, my characters wouldn't necessarily have the information of these previous characters, quests, and encounters.

This is the problem with not having leveled zones. Each zone story has to cater to a potential new player. It should've remained level locked, but with enemies scaling up or higher level players scaling down (potentially) for gear drops. Furthermore, all base game zones should have remained alliance locked with dlc zones being open to everyone. This would have increased longevity and allowed more quality story telling imo. Vanilla ESO story was the 2nd best with Wrothgar being 1st still imo.

I like to think my characters are consistently playing dumb to mess with whoever they're talking to.
    Me: 'Who are you again?'
Them: 'We've already been over this! But fine... *proceeds to explain for the 29th time*'
Me: *waits patiently for them to finish* 'So... Who are you again?'

But in reality it is in place because not everyone plays everything in sequence of events and not everyone plays 24/7 or all year long. Some people take long gaps in between doing stories and those little questions to refresh the memory help out. Honestly, they've helped me a few times in refreshing me on who someone is.

"What's the three banner's war?" -Vestige, in Blackwood, who literally fought in the three banner's war, on all 3 sides

"Who's the worm king?" Vestige, in Summerset, imagine forgetting about the dude that literally KILLED YOU

"What's a wyress?" -Vestige, in Bangkorai, who literally helped a wyrd back in glenumbra

"The longhouse emperors?" + "what's the knahaten flu?"- Vestige, who literally have these 2 exact same questions answered over and over again in their previous adventures. Vestige, are you ok?

"Who are you again?" -Vestige, to Lyris, Sai Sahan, and Abnur Tharn. The people that you know, helped you defeated a daedric prince.

"Remind me what happened" -Vestige, 2 minutes after completing a zone main quest. How in the world do you forget what you literally did 10 minutes earlier?

What's next? What will the Vestige say next?

    "Who's Molag Bal?"

    "What's Tamriel?"

    "What's my name?"

I need a healer asap for severe brain damage and memory loss problems, my Vestige needs help.

Ah the one thing that drives me insane about the dialogue options.

My guess is they are continuously attempting to make sure new players are able to know whats going on, the problem with that is they sacrifice veteran players of the game in terms of story. Its all rather silly.

It completely ruins immersion as well.

"The elder scrolls have foretold of this moment, the soulless one shall become the most clueless of 5 stars." - Varen Aquilarious in the original concept of the game.

Stuff like this has bugged me to no end. I think it's perfectly find to have those options for players who want more background during quests. However for people who know whats up it feels like I'm playing an idiot when I am forced to ask "Who are the tribunal?" when I am a dunmer. Don't make us have to choose options that make us seem ignorant of the most basic of things.
  • Anachronia
Time is like a big ball of wibbly wobbly, timey wimey, stuff. In all seriousness, it's likely due to the multiple situations involving our soul causing past, present, and future anachronisms and temporary losses of knowledge about lore that we, the player, would or could know, but the character does not. Plus, limited budgets for dialogue involving every possible state that the character could be in, with varying levels of knowledge about events that occurred in the past with their playthrough.

They could get 90% of the way there with better phrasing.

    From: "What's the Three-Banner War?
To: "You mentioned the Three-Banner War. How's this region been affected?" -- NPC then proceeds to give you a recap of what it is to level set with you, or complain about how dumb they think the war is for the reasons it started.

Has anyone noticed that with some NPCs included main story characters the responses you get are sometimes condescending or annoyed? Its almost as if they dont know why they have to explain it again.

The worst thing is when the NPCs themselves insult you for asking these questions.

Totally agree. With a little effort (and skills) you could do it in so much better way, instead "What's?" make "How's" question and instead "Who?" (like GoG ^^) "What were you doing since the last time when we were fighting Daedra conspiracy to take over the World, Pinky?!" (cause what else you could do in Tamriel? Maybe except Wrothgar) ^^
