Questions regarding Bastion

So I have Bastion unlocked equipped with white companion heavy armor and S&B. When in combat, specifically a normal dungeon. He keeps putting his sword and shield away and walking off for a few seconds in the middle of combat. I have him set up with provoke, Drakes blood, crushing claws and crag smash as a am still unlocking skills and leveling him. My rapport is slightly above midway and he counts me as a friendly acquaintance.

My questions are, why does he keep keep putting his weapons away in the middle of combat? I’m not walking away from enemies. Literally stacking like I would with 4 real players right behind bosses. This only happened in the dungeons and not in open world with world bosses.

Also, does he get assigned a role when walking in a dungeon? I’m trying to assign him as a tank.

They don't get assigned roles sadly, but their "role" is dictated by how you command them and what abilities you slot. If you set them up as a tank always command them to taunt what you need taunted and they'll do the rest. In a dungeon though it prioritizes real people over companions and will unsummon them to keep a group of 4. I imagine same goes with large groups up to 12.

My guess is that it's either a bug or you're accidentally commanding them to cease combat during your fights.

I've had Bastian die, and after reviving there's simply no way to make him care about the combat we're in sometimes -- but that's definitely a bug. I've never personally had him just stop caring right in the middle of combat unprompted, though.

I advise you figure out what the command for Command Pets is on your platform, and practice directing him to initiate and cease combat with Mudcrabs or something a few times. (I'd help, but I'm on PC with a controller and a heavily customized layout -- for my setup I hold in my right bumper and command him to go passive or aggressive with the triggers. I don't know the standard keybinds.)

Hmm, it seems to only happen when playing on an alt. While playing on the first character I unlocked them on him and Mirri both perform as intended. When I swap to an alt though they both seem uninterested in the combat.

I only have one character and therefore one Bastian but I had a couple of instances where he's pretty much just watched me fight. He's setup as a DD.

1h+shield appears to have a special AI script, maybe because its designated as the tanking weapon they won't act normally with it on compared to other weapons (even the resto staff). With a 1h+shield equipped they only seem to attack targets that are either attacking them directly, they have taunted, or you pet command them to attack otherwise they go passive not to draw unwanted aggro. This is probably to allow them to remain attacking the same target even if you switch targets, so they can keep tanking that specified target while you go off and do other things.

I have not tested this, but someone in the game said that giving him a Sword and Shield will put him in the Tank Role.

Would that also happen with a Ice Staff ?
This AI script will be important.
Also perhaps other hidden factors like: is trhe block mitigation 50% of damage and is that the same for a S&B, a Ice Staff, for other weapons ? And is there a cooldown ?

He has S&B and heavy armor. I use him as a tank. I can send him to taunt an enemy and he will. But sometimes in the middle of the fight, he’ll just put his sword away and walk around for a few seconds then he’ll taunt the enemy again.

Mine’s set up as a magdd & he’s been pretty good in fights. Not dying, & doing damage. Quite surprised!

Same did happen to me today,I did fight a bigger mob in Blackwood and Bastian decided to watch me killing it,I have him set up as tank with Sword and shield and taunting skill but nop,he was standing there and didn't even react

To me it did seem like a bug as they normally start fighting once you start attacking something.

I've noticed this too, I set him up as a healer and took him into a group dungeon. I needed heals, turned to look for him and he was just standing there staring at a wall with his staff neatly tucked away. I summoned my Twilight and left him to his daydreaming. So far for me, he works a lot better with a destro staff, but will still wander off sometimes in the middle of combat.
