Are companion equipped armor and weapons supposed to be the same across characters?

I like the fact that companion equipment I find on one character on a server are available to all the (same) companions across my other characters .. but what I equip and slot on a companion on one character doesn't seem like it should also be equipped/slotted on my other character's same companions .. I don't necessarily want the same companion acting the same for all my characters ...

Yea I was wondering the same today as I did unlock the companion on other character and was surprised to see Bastian was already leveled up and equipped with all the gear what my main character did put on him.
I also wasn't able to change his outfit as it was also the same what my main did put on him.
If it is intended like this I do not like it because I don't need a Bastian tank for all my characters.

I figure you get variety only through the companion you pick.
For instance, Mirri for dps and heals, Bastian for tank and heal.
I would expect more companions will drop over the course of the year with the DLCs or major patches.

I personally don’t like it, but companions are a bit like player houses.

What one character does to change them, is shared with your other characters.

It’s a bit annoying as I wanted to theme each one for each character I have. Seems like that won’t be the case.
