Will companion gear drop if account does not have Blackwood expansion?

If Blackwood expansion is required to get companion gear drops, can a character that has not unlocked any companion get drops?

Update: Can't figure out how to change selected Answer. I initially believed the reports that players without companions were getting drops of companion gear. However, in my own personal experience since Update 30 went "live," I have not received any companion gear unless a companion was active.

Well, two players have said the companion must be obtained and deployed (active) to get companion-gear drops. But a guy in my guild claims he just got a companion-gear drop on a character that has not yet unlocked a companion. So. I guess I'll just test this myself.

I'm with that other guy. Have Blackwood, didn't even start any companion quests (let alone unlocking them) and got a piece of companion armour from a chest.

You need a companion actively summoned to get drops.

No since you need an active companion for that, wich for now are only found within the blackwood region

I started testing; but quickly lost enthusiasm. I suppose I would need to a large sample to answer the question: hundreds of public dungeon bosses and/or dolmens. On an account that does not have Blackwood (therefore, no companion), killing 24 public dungeon bosses yielded ZERO companion-gear drops. Now does this mean companion-gear will never drop? or is the sample size simply too small. On another account that has Blackwood and had a companion active, got a companion-gear drop upon killing the 5th dungeon boss. So, I don't know: it may be that one must have a companion (in spite of what my guild mate reported to me to the contrary).

Are you trying to say that companion gear will never drop during a PUG dungeone run unless I kick someone to make space for my companion? :0

Excellent point. I have had companion gear drop during a 4-player (no-companion) group running a group dungeon. Therefore, the two responses that said an active companion is required can't be right. However, I am still wondering if Blackwood expansion is required. I've now heard from two people who said they got companion-gear drops without completing either initial companion quest; however, both of those players had Blackwood.

Since you can get antiquity leads without having greymoor or scrying skill lines unlocked, I would imagine it would be the same for companion gear. I think this for threw reasons. 1. Since it is able to be sold it would create a huge imbalance in the game in terms of gold 2. It is a great way to make people want to buy the new chapter who don't have it and 3. The coding would have to be more simple to just have a chance to drop always.

But leads can’t be acted upon without Greymoor. They are there to tempt you with the promise of what you could get.

Whereas if you get companion gear, you can sell it immediately to those who can use it — and right now, that gear can fetch a pretty big price. That’s a big benefit without owning the chapter.

Does that create an imbalance? Yes, in the same way that patterns and motifs from Blackwood are creating an imbalance — those who have Blackwood can benefit from selling them. Those who don’t have to buy them, or buy Blackwood to get them for “free” (time investment rather than gold) or to make a profit on them. That’s by design.

Allowing companion gear to drop for those who don’t own Blackwood is contradictory to the design, whatever one thinks of it.
