it's almost like they should drop crown crates in favor of direct purchases, they'd probably garner more positive PR and more money that way

something that Destiny did which I agree with

There's no way they'd make more money that way since every item would have to have a cap set to it on it's value. Think of MTG or Pokemon booster packs, they cost $10 dollars or so for the pack, but they could contain $10 worth of cards, or $80 worth of cards depending on what cards are actually in it. The difference here though, is that every MTG card has a value, but it's a third party value. Wizards of the Coast does not set a value on individual cards themselves, only on packs.

But ZOS sets a value for individual items on the store themselves, which means a mount that costs 3k crowns can never be sold for more than 3k crowns. So if only 10 people buy that mount they will never make that much money off that item.

But Radiant mounts have no "value". There is no dollar number attached to those mounts, since there is no set amount of crates it takes to get one...only an estimated amount. But that number is different for each end user. That means that ZOS could make as little as $5 bucks of a player who loots one, or as much as $1,500 dollars off a player...or more. There is no hard cap on the price. As someone who buys a lot of crowns, there are players who probably spent $10k+ to get all of the radiant mounts. With a price cap set by direct sales, they're not going to make $10k off players per purchase. Which is what funds the game.

There are a lot of people who only spend the bare amount of money to play ESO, the price of admission and nothing else. But it is the people who buy from the restaurants, concession stands, season pass subscriptions, Fast Passes, and merch that keep a theme park up and running. The family that spent $40 on tickets for 4 one time out of 5 years isn't going to put a dent in keep a park online, but the family that spends $1,500 on a park's hotel for a week, and $3,000 for tickets + concession and merch every 4 or 5 months as a regular event will keep the lights on.

While I get that the people who only pay for price of admission want to also eat at the restaurant, get the T-Shirts, and skip the lines, only those willing to help pay a games internet bills and rent will reap those rewards.

I know it is me and I am the cynical gloomy one here but until ZOS give us actual data about the chance in the crown crates I will never believe it is truly random. There are plenty of companies who let you know the percentage of what you buy beforehand or have a minimum requirement before something can drop.

I am against the crate system but if they want to keep using that at least be transparant about it... just like slotmachines in casino's.

I'm wary of setting high gem prices on things, because I'm afraid that it can lead to the bad chain of: high gem price - people farm gems - people get a lot of gems - more gem exclusive items. And I hate gem exclusives.
They could do that anyway. They have moonwalked a few things they said the wouldn't/won't do. As long as they give a set gem price for radiant mounts and a way to access those crates using gold i think we will be fine.

I'm certainly glad some people have governments dictating to them, "protecting" them from themselves and making sure they don't have 'choices' because choices is bad apparently. :o

I was raised with the belief that people are responsible for themselves and their own actions and freedom of choice is worth fighting and dying for. Sad how some countries are going backwards and slowly becoming more totalitarian and people just letting it happen.

By extension, this also means companies are responsible for the consequences of products they design and the ways and which they market them. It goes both ways. Companies cannot lie, coerce, or scam customers free from consequence or responsibility. Gambling is basically a scam. That's why it is well-regulated in any civilized culture.

Looks like you can only get free crown crates through promotions etc. If loot crates are against your country's laws I'm not sure what you want ZOS to do about that. It does suck that you don't have the same freedom to buy them as in other countries, but that's your government trying to protect you from gambling and it's not ZOS' fault.

Honestly this, except it is ZOS's fault for having such a predatory system that the gov needs to protect it's people from.

After seeing people blow THOUSANDS of IRL dollars on pixel gamble boxes, they have a right to outlaw it.

Wait, so it's ZOS's fault that Belgium's government has outlawed all "loot boxes" from all online games-- even all those online games from other companies? Gosh, how rude of ZOS to mess things up for all those other companies that have "loot boxes" in their games, too.

I could just as well say that looking at any other woman besides your wife is "basically" cheating. But then we'd have to argue at what standard we are using to quantify what "cheating" actually is. But at the end of the day, that standard changes based on the culture or society or group of individuals you ask to quantify it. The short-winded conclusion is that it's a subjective concept.

Similar to gambling. If you cross the street without looking both ways, is that a gamble? What about driving without your seatbelt buckled, is that a gamble? What about with your seatbelt buckled, does that make driving no longer a gamble?

What about how the United States' Federal Government defines as "gambling"? If I open a crate, do I have a chance to walk away with the entire pot leaving the house with zero pot? Does the house have a chance to walk away with the entire pot leaving me with absolutely nothing? What currency is actually being gambled? And if I win a Radiant mount, can I then go and pawn it or pay my rent with it? Is it a tangible currency that I win?

Asking for my friend, Ja Rule.

I was browsing the store and noticed crown crates missing. Googeling around a bit I found out that this is because I live in Belgium and loot crates are against the law here. However this makes me wonder..how are we ment to get crown crate items then? How are we ment to get apex crystals? Why has there been no solution from zos for us? It seems a bit unfair we are being denied so many things..

With the new expansion, you will have the opportunity to buy crown items with a new currency which you can collect ingame. Check out the info on the new expansion:

Maybe that will make it possible for you to get crown items again...

    Will it benifit the consumer?
    Hell yes.
But it is a bold statement to make that they will earn more money if they ditch crown crate as ZOS have the data needed to make that assumption and not us.
