Idea for handling hate whispers

For instance, if someone were to message me something hateful, they can't block me for 5 minutes after they sent that message which allows me time to respond to that message.

That could be abused. Player 1 hate-messages player 2, so player 1 is prevented from blocking player 2 for 5 minutes. Now player 2 can send hate-messages back to player 1 for 5 minutes. And what if player 1 replies back-- does the 5-minute timer start all over again? And presumably player 2 now has a 5-minute timer ticking, too, since they messaged pkayer 1.

The best move it's not to reply a hateful whisper. Don't fuel the pointless chat. Just ignore it.

But again I don't understand why the mentality is to just accept it and move on rather than try to remove as much hate whispering as possible. You are just asking the person receiving a hate tell to be the better person with no consequence to the person that sent the hate in the first place. I know this isn't a full-proof plan but I do believe that it would help in some capacity which is better than leaving it as is.

It isn't accepting it. It is ignoring it. Also nothing wrong with being the better person.

On a different path the server has enough problems calculating player interactions. Having to track a timer between two players that whispered one or the other I think would make problems worse.

So if someone mid whisper conversation starts sexually harassing you, you can't block him for the next 5 minutes? A big big big no thank you. Block should always be available.

PS: what does need to change is
    1. you can't whisper people you blocked.
    2. When invisible you can only whisper group, guild, and friend list members.

I appreciate the sentiment, but two "wrongs" won't make a right. You're essentially asking the devs to code a way for people to engage each other in a string of potentially toxic messages back and forth for 5 minutes. Basically sanctioning PvP "road rage."

Take a screenshot and report the user. Probably a more constructive use of your time that also helps others from not having to deal with that person in the future.

Wait, how do you even know they blocked you? I would just assume they are appearing offline...

Do you get a message or something when attempting to chat with folks who've /ignored you, or are people just overlooking this super obvious possibility?

(I'm genuinely asking, because I've been doing PvP in offline mode since day 2 so I don't have experience here.)

Why would you want to communicate with the kind who send hate whispers anyway? If you want to be sarcastic mail em a potato with polite thanks but ignoring would be more productive.

Agreed! Never a reason to communicate with those types.

I've also sent potatoes, but I also add a saltrice too with a "Enjoy!" :sunglasses:

How to handle hate? You don't! You just ignore and/or report them!

It's crazy how some people engage extensively with abusers and try to reason with them, and then complain about having been abused. We can't change the fact that there bad people around us. Exposing yourself to an abuser is abusive in itself!

In years of MMORPGs and PvP the best way I have found for handling hate whispers, or any absurd comment, was to just walk away and not bother replying. It seems that just adds fuel to the fire. This also makes it irrelevant that they blocked you because you will not know. Heck, they probably blocked after the hate whisper figuring it will just infuriate the person even more that they cannot reply.

Following my own advice has lead to a very peaceful gaming experience.

I'd rather the opposite of your request.

If you just engaged in combat with a person and lost you can't whisper them for 5 minutes unless they whisper you first.

Heck take it a step further and make it so you can't whisper someone you just engaged in combat with in general for a couple minutes.

I point everyone who is talking about the 5 minutes thing to look at what Jeremy and I came up with in the middle of this thread. And to also read the entire conversation before writing a comment rather than just reading the initial thoughts and then saying the exact same thing as everyone who commented before you did.

I don't think its a good idea to attempt pre-emptively limit players communication or ability to ignore between players. When people do not want whispers they block. If someone does not want see your perfectly rational, logical and polite reply to their angry whining then they can block you. If you want to whisper someone a truthful observation about their cheaty ingame conduct but don't want to hear back their sniveling you can block them. In particular, if player A blocks player B, player B should still see player A's chat messages unless B decides to block A. This is a game where players can kill each others characters [snip]

Honestly, just go offline whenever in cyro. A lot of kids play pvp and it just avoids having to interact with them. You only get 100 block spots anyway I think and I save them for the idiots who spam the general channel with *** talk.

I've been playing in offline mode for the past like...3 years now? Maybe 4 years. It works wonders, especially when I'm on my Gankblade during midyear mayhem.

    So that was you!

Can I have my 4 tel var back please.
