Storing apples together corrupts this many of them?

And how do guards know that an apple is stolen anyway?

Well your character is just that picky they only ever take apples with people's names on them.

It doesn't matter if you find a single apple or a whole basket full, logically you can still only pick up one or two at a time.

Maybe someone casted an illusion spell on the basket that makes it seem to have more than 2 😝

The others are rotten, obviously. You have to dig through to find the one that doesn't have a worm in it. :D

But look, magical things also happen the other way around: you use one apple and get a dozen baked apples out of it.

Looting one apple should give you an apple slice, after gathering ten slices you would be able to refine them at a craft table. In fact, this should be the case for all fruit. ESO+ subscribers would have access to a fruit basket to store these slices.

There's a book on provisioning that sort of explains this. It appears all over Tamriel next to cooking fires in certain cities, but the first time I read it-- meaning, didn't just glance at it to "acquire" it, then immediately close it, but actually read it leisurely from beginning to end-- was on Bleakrock Isle. In the book, the author refers to helping yourself to ingredients while you're exploring the world, but taking just a handful:
    Step 1: Acquire Ingredients
When you are in the field, your backpack is the only pantry upon which your soldiers can rely. Requisition anything you can find—every barrel, chest, or sack of grain should make its contribution to your cause.
As an Imperial soldier you have the right to requisition as much as you want, but use discretion. A citizen with an empty larder will have long memories of Imperial imposition. A single handful, scoop, or item from each barrel, chest, or sack is my simple rule.

My inventory has a whole lot more than 2 of them, so I can fit a lot. I could grab a LOT this way if so many were there as it graphically indicates!

(Not a real complaint mind you, I just find this humorous and potentially even annoying. I have plenty of things to fix instead.)

Don't give them ideas! They might regress to that!

I would never put apples in a basket in that case! Too many immediately go rotten!

The others are an illusion spell demanded by no less than both the gods and daedra themselves to be cast on every single basket of apples and other similar foodstuffs in the entirety of Tamriel, specifically to screw with the vestige. It is known.

If you were to steal them all it would be immediately noticeable to the orchard workers they have been robbed or it would let their employers know they stopped picking apples 7 years ago.

That and its a game, without artificial scarcity mats would be worthless.

kills a Mammoth gets 3 pieces of raw leather, I sure made use of every part of that kill. But if I got a few hundred raw leather out of that kill and every Mammoth kill afterwards what do you think would happen to leather prices?

The main time gathering logic annoys me is in situations like the vineyard in Summerset they have all these baskets of grapes, but you cant interact with them they are just decoration, I knew the high elves were ahead in magic I just did not expect them to dedicate that talent to making un-steal able grape baskets.
