Help me choose class/race for my mag DD

I have been playing support for as long as I remember. Now I’m running an increasing amount of vet DLC trials, I would like to change to DD, or at least be more flexible when it comes to role. Magicka DDs seem more sought after in some trials so I have decided to make one of those.

My first question is how would rank the different mag classes? Ideally, I would like one that doesn’t have an overly complex rotation, and one which is fun to play. I am an older player, and not a natural DD, but I am will to put in the time to get competitive numbers. What mag class would you recommend, and also, what race would be your choice? Thanks :)

Magcro will guarantee you slot in any trial group as long as you pull the numbers. Its BiS currently, highest dps and best group buffs. And best race for that is currently Khajiit.

As an aging player myself, I would rec a magsorc, either a Breton (best sustain) or Altmer (higher damage), but really any race would be fine. I have a couple magsorcs and they're great fun. You can do an easy build with or without pets, but with pets, you can has a super easy and effective rotation. Great for both trials and dungeons as you'll be mostly ranged DD and can avoid a lot of melee damage. Gear for this build is easy to get too--Mother's Sorrow (you can get a lightning staff from a quest in Deshaan, super easy, just google it to find out which quest it is) and Law of Julianos (craftable) to start off will give you plenty of DPS for group content, and basically any good magic Monster Set will work.
PC-NA since 2015. Tired and unimpressed.

Thanks for the advice. I know that Magcros are really popular in trials. I have a stamcro that can be race-changed. Currently a Redguard, but Khajiit would be better either way.

I appreciate the recommendation. As it happens, I have a High Elf sorc that I’ve used as a mule for years. I think I even have Mage’s Guild on it, which makes life easier. My only problem with a sorc is the amount of hatred pets used to get in trials. Not sure if things have changed. I only have one sorc (non-pet) in my regular group. I am good for DPS sets. Running DOC trials, I’ve managed to salt away some perfected gear, and I have Sorrow fire staff and jewellery.

Thanks. Cro seems like a safe bet :)

Complexity from simplest to hardest (in my opinion):
    1. Mag Sorc
    2. Mag Den
    3. Mag Cro
    4. Mag Plar
    5. Mag DK
    6. Mag NB

Cro and Blade are the big ones in trials atm. Cro definitely the easier.

If you want to diversify, you can also build a sorc, or (as I play) a magDK with Z'ens/Martial Knowledge to damage boost the group.

I'd say magsorc or magblade would be easier to pull off. Necro (and warden in that regard, since both have a "delayed" spammable) might be a bit frustrating bc you need to be on point with your rotations to make it effective. I would certainly recommend trying it out after getting more familiar with dpsing on an easier class. Magsorcs have a very simple rotations and nice survivability due to class shields and crit surge, and are actually perfect to learn to dps on, so for my first dd character, I would go with that. Magblades are also good and quite easy to play, have very nice survivability too due to the fact that both the ST and AOE spammables heal you. You don't need a complicated rotation for a nightblade to do quite a lot of damage in combat. Another advantage of both of these classes is that they both can be completely ranged while still using class abilities (unlike, for example, templar or dk), so you can stay safely out of danger and get rid of far away targets with ease (like orbs in vCR).

This. I played all the mag classes and magsorc and magblade felt the easiest to play effectively. Magcro is excellent but their rotation is definitely harder because of skills like blastbones and siphon being slightly clunky and have to keep up a lot of skills during rotation.
