I think that this is looking for umbrage. You really have to stretch things to make this case. They are only using the current season, and this completely negates anything people have done in the past as those rewards are gone. The rewards from previous seasons are not available. Going forward, you now know that you can gamble, Gem, or Seal these things.

Awesome news. If this means that I can grab what I actually want and not get a whole bunch of "value" I really don't want, its great news.

It also feels like they're going out of their way to make this as accessible as possible. I don't mind if the apex mounts are very expensive - they're meant to be rare.

    Pretty happy about this.

I have gotten most of my mounts from saving gems.

Regardless of how this is implemented, someone will compain, though it is often the case that the devil is in the detail so I am interested to see how many seals things go for and what you can earn a day. But I think this is a step in the right direction, whether it is to stave off loot box problems or not.

Where is the downside to sometimes being able to get free stuff for things you might do anyway? It's only a grind if you want it to be, or you want the shiny immediately, surely? Although the number of 'currencies' is getting a bit much!

To be fair, people are just tired of shady practises and feeling like they're being ripped off. Mindlessly negative is kinda lame, but I get why people are cautious, even though I'm really pumped about this.

But why would you buy crate items you didn’t want, when you just save the Seals of Whatever for items you do?

Gee, what a great thing - they're introducing mind-numbing grind alternative to gambling. Amazing how shamelessly they introduce f2p mechanics into a fully priced game that has separately sold DLCs, microtransactions and premium subscription.

Just proof that you can't please all people all the time.

    They're not wrong.

Depending on the details of this system - and the devil is definitely in the details - this may make the messed up monetization somewhat less egregious. However, it doesn't change the overall profile of this game's monetization or its endless, addiction-inducing gameplay loops. It's still utilizing free-to-play mechanics in a buy-to-play game that also has paid DLCs and chapters, a paid subscription, and abundant macrotransactions. It's also still utilizing habit-forming game design that poses a very real risk of game addiction for some folks; this new system likely adds another addiction risk into the game by creating yet another Skinner box.

In fairness, all this is typical game design for any games-as-a-service. It doesn't have to be, but it is.

The gem conversion aspect seems to be talking about items you buy with the Seals.

You don't have to spend seals on things you don't want.

"This includes any of the crate’s consumables (such as potions or XP scrolls), pets, cosmetics, or even its extremely rare Radiant Apex mounts. For the first time in The Elder Scrolls Online, you can acquire these highly sought-after items via gameplay in addition to finding them within crates. Note that any Crown Crate items you acquire with Seals cannot be converted into gems."

Literally no need to convert anything to gems, because you can buy exactly what you want.

    *Laughs in Guild Wars 2*

Seriously if you think ESO is bad you should see their list of currencies. (And if you did look at the link bear in mind that's just the ones the game classes as currencies, there's a separate list of "tokens" which are exchanged for various things, then there's crafting materials which are sometimes used as currencies...

I have to admit I don't understand why they don't just make endeavours award crown gems, since they'll do the same thing. That's what makes me think the prices might be quite different, that's the only reason I could see for introducing a new currency. (Although I would have thought they could achieve the same thing by adjusting how many gems you get - for example if they want it to be that once a month you can get a 100 gem item just make it so you earn about 3-4 gems a day.)

Well the downside to this will be when crate prices increase and most people will end up having to buy them anyways because if the new CP grind is any indication of the direction that ZOS is moving the game then the grind for these free crates will be insane.

It's a Buy to Play game...you have to buy the base game in order to play. But everything beyond that is 100% optional. You're of course not going to get a premium experience by only paying the bare minimum, but if you should willing choose to purchase more than the base game, you'll have access to more than you would otherwise.

I see this as a good thing, something that could give people a chance to get stuff without spending exorbitant amounts of money via gamblecrates in order to get things.

Now I would like to better understand people who have a problem with this, because I don't see the hard downside to this.

I don't see a downside to it either. The worst case scenario I can see is it's worthless because endeavours are too grindy/difficult/time consuming to be worth completing, most of the rewards aren't worth having and the crown crate items are so expensive in the new currency that it's unrealistic to try to get any before the crates change over.

But in that case players can simply ignore the system and carry on as they did before. You don't gain anything, but it's not taking anything away either. You might occasionally complete an endeavour without even trying because it happens to coincide with what you're doing anyway and then you get some unexpected free stuff, otherwise the game is the same as before.

Edit: I suppose if you're opposed to crown crates and don't think this will be a good alternative one downside is that having this system makes it less likely they'll remove the crates entirely or offer another alternative.

Not true, it says in the article that they're automatically active and collect automatically once they're completed - you can literally ignore them and still profit.

Note that you can't convert the junk items obtained this way to gems.
So that is one big downside.

It doesn't say you get junk from it, the only things mentioned other than the new currency were gold and XP. I think it just meant if you buy something with the new currency you can't then turn it into gems

Whilst I welcome this before everyone thinks they will be getting radiants they are not going to be cheap, you are going to have to earn a lot of Endeavours for them. Good luck

Haha. Yeah. But at least now we can waste time instead of money to be disappointed :P

It still takes time to earn the money you were going to waste so you wouldn't have to waste time.

So you can choose which seals to buy, you know what they are before you use them?
If so no problem, but that sounds too good to be true. We will see.

Seals are just a currency, you'll be able to use them on whatever item you want, granted you have enough seals. Reminds me of ubisoft's orichalcum or opals for the last two Assassin's creed games (except we're shopping from crate seasons instead of a weekly shop)

If the idea is to provide a method outside of the crown store, then there is no downside. "But the grind" is hilarious, at least to me, but I've actually played games with very real grind, where a couple of hours of continuous grind gained you 1% of a level, and if you should die during that, you'll have a net loss of 3%, since you lose 4% xp on death. Since I'm not big on crates regardless, as in, I don't buy them with sub stipends, as a rule, this is a method for me to get something I would never get, which means it's a net positive.

This seems like they're trying to do a rough copy of the scoreboards in FO76, and if that's the case, I'm all for it, the daily and weekly challenges there take no time at all, and you can earn some awesome rewards from their scoreboards. I feel that it was a great addition to FO76, and I hope it'll be as good here too.
