Why do you target low-level recipes? How do you know when you are done?

The argument was made against having all recipes fall at the high level because some of you target specific recipes at specific levels.

Can someone explain why you would know what you were targeting? If it is being complete, how do you know when you have all the recipes at that level?

I do not want to reargue the issue, I just want to understand the reasoning in this point.

Learn 10 Provisioning Recipes unlocks an outfit color, again at 50 and 100 Recipes; can't accomplish that with only max level recipes. I spam through guild traders scrolling quickly down the list until I see "Already known" to "Use to learn recipe" you just hold down the button on each list, the color change is easy to notice without actually seeing each item.

    1. "all" recipes don't even drop from the daily provisioning rewards. It's only about 50% of the possible recipes that drop from there.

    2. I want to have all the low end recipes on just my main, for completion sake

    3. Other characters want to learn the low level PURPLE recipes for increase master writ drop rates (Green and Blue recipes do not affect this)

    4. I know OP is on console.. but doesn't the base game UI have check boxes for what you "can craft" and "can't craft". I'm trying to remember if it does or not.

    5. So, of my 18 characters on my main. I have 6 do provisioning writs at max level, 3 at tier 5, 3 at tier 4, 3 at tier 3 and 3 at tier 2. So I get the recipes. This way I can control which level I'm getting instead of leaving it completely up to RNG and have a massive drop pool. (Similar to the anniversary event, we are getting a LOT of motifs... but the odds of getting the specific motif that you need is not good, because the loot pool is so large.)

    1. All base green, blue and purple recipes drop from writs, only the special ones don't - tho you can get fragments for Psijic Ambrosia too. I'd say you can get 90% + from writs.

    2. I'm the same, I've collected all up to level 40 currently by keeping most of my characters at a lower level and feeding unknown ones to my main.

    3. I'd forgotten that, thanks. If my alts ever get back to max level writs it'll be nice to be getting a bit better drop!

    4. On console too, it doesn't show recipes you haven't already learned. The can and can't craft options only applies to ones you can't do because your level isn't high enough and/or don't have the mats. The only real option is using an app to track them, which is what I do.

    5. This is the only way to really do it. I spent forever trying to find the recipes in guild traders and a lot of them are impossible to find. I guess with addons it's easier!

    Thanks for the replies.

My "mains" on NA and EU know most recipes now, but I was trying to figure out why people would argue so passionately to not just let them all drop at the higher levels instead of having to suppress the level to get some. Some argued they wanted that on purpose so they could control what they got, but I still can't figure out how that would ultimately be better since I am not clear how you would know when you are "done" with a specific level.

I do wish the guild trader interface let me set a "unknown" flag rather than requiring the manual search. That would make finding new ones much easier.

I would also agree with what @tmbrinks said that all of them do not seem to drop, even with suppressed levels. Having a single source for all possible buyable recipes would be better than the way it is now, where you can only buy within a range of where you are.

I would still like an answer of the clear reasoning for the desire for fixing them to levels since I still have not seen that, other than the general argument that they may come faster since the pool is smaller. Run enough dailies at max level would cover that however if it really did drop all of them, so I want to figure out the reasoning.

    It's swings and roundabouts.

The current system makes it easier to target specific recipes by doing the "right" level writs. It needs you to be fairy dedicated to it tho, with lots of alts doing them, or it's still going to take a long time. You also have to prioritise it over being able to get master writs or being able to craft food you can use. Even specialising the drop rate on some is horribly small. I had 17 characters doing level 2 writs every day for months to get Truth-Glimpse, I still have nightmares!

If any level recipe dropped it would increase the pool of possible recipes by a LOT, and make it really unlikely you'd get that one particular recipe you need. On the other hand, it would be hugely beneficial to people who prefer to just have one character or only one that crafts/does writs because they'll have a much better chance of getting something they don't know. They can't keep their level artificially low because they need to be able to make food, so the chance of them picking up lower level recipes is really small.

Changing it to drop anything would probably not help existing player too much. There would be too many they know already so they'd hardly ever get one they actually need. It would help new players quite a bit because over time their collections would naturally grow rather than being restricted to their level.

A good compromise would be a little of both. Keep the levelled one and add a second random one, or have them alternate. I think something like that would probably suit most people.

I admit I don't know the actual figures of what currently does and doesn't drop, I just know I haven't had any so far I couldn't get from writs. Some took a while but I've been able to get everything. Plus even after all those months trying to get Truth-Glimpse, my alts were still getting new ones and I didn't have a whole load of spares.

    Thanks for the details.

I wish I could know what I don't know, in the game.

I suppose I could look up an external link and then view what I know, but that is horribly inefficient. I guess I can use this if I ever find something I really do want.

I would greatly prefer to have everyone cranking at the high level and letting it shake out, since being lower seems "incomplete" to me, but at least I see the reasoning now.

I'm not entirely sure about the reward recipes.

But the recipes that the writs call for are different based on alliance for Tiers 1, 2 and 3 provisioning writs... so it's likely that the rewards are from different pools as well

You can get all the recipes from the appropriate level of Writ. However:

    1. Some recipes are super rare, for example any mid tier Blue recipe with a Rabbit in it.
    2. I am not sure if you have to do writs with all 3 Alliances represented to get all the recipes. But i have kitted out two Alts with all recipes from Writs.

But, that was so long ago, now i just sell the recipes i do get.

For base game Green, there are 6 combinations along the axis of Food or Drink and Health, Magicka, or Stamina. And there are 3 of each at each of the following levels:
    1
    5
    10
    15
    20
    25
    30
    35
    40
    45
    CP10
    CP50
    CP100
    CP150

For those needing the math, 6x3x14=252 Green recipes.

For Blue there are 6 combinations along the axis of Food or Drink and Health/Stamin, Health/Magicka, or Stamina/Magicka. These start at level 10, and continue 3 of each from there like the Greens. Which is 6x3x12=216 Blue recipes.

Purple gets a little trickier. There are only 2 types, Food or Drink Health/Stamina/Magicka. They start at level 20, and along with 25 and 30, there is only one of each, or 6 total. Starting at 35, there are 4 of each from then on. That would mean there are (6)+(2x4x7)=62 Purple recipes in the base game.

You can get an idea of which levels you are missing by checking the cooking fire, which are broken into 14 types of food/drink and listed be level. So if you only have 2 level 5 teas, you know you are missing one.

There is a final pair of categories at the bottom for all the holiday recipes. You can find these listed on the achievements for Jester's, Witch's, and New Life Festivals. There are also 3 types of Ambrosia and War Tarts, 50%, 100%, and 150% Exp or Alliance Rank. There are 4 from a quest in Wrothgar you can buy from a trader, and 3 from a Clockwork City quest you can't. Likewise, there are 2 you have fish for yourself on the Psijic Island.

I think that's all of them.

Edit: a couple of the Witch Festival ones may have the wrong names. The vampires ones in particular were changed when vampirism was updated.

The post from driosketch above yours outlines exactly how many recipes there are at each level/quality. You can just count at a provisioning station and see how many (if any) you're missing, then use a reference like the uesp provisioning page to figure out what you're missing.

I missed that on my first reading of his post. I will see if I can figure it out better on the PS4 later.

Far more complicated than it should be, but I guess it will let me know when I am "complete".

Tracking across alts is a pain, but I am really only wanting to make sure 1 "main" on NA and EU has all of them, so it is not too bad.

So I slogged through the post, looking at the cooking fire. I paiod 15K to reset to 1 Provisioning and worked my way up the points again, 1 point at a time, checking a food and drink vendor each time. That filled out the non-CP green recipes I could see, but I note I am still missing (I think ) several great CP ones, all at level 50.

The blues are worse, as are the purples.

I still don't see how those who claim "targeting" a specific level is best unless you know the exact recipe you need (somehow). I did find several I didn't have on vendors, but I don't want to pay more than 10K each for them, so I am holding off for now.

This is really confusing however. The system either needs to indicate "you are missing these recipes at Provisioning level X" or it should just give the full set of recipes at top level, since I see no other way to figure this out without some external source.

Thanks again for the clarity everyone. No one really gave a good case on how they knew they needed to camp someone at a specific Provisioning level however. I was hoping to see that given the passion some claimed it was the best way.

There are several android and apple apps that have built in trackers too among other features, some free and others costing a small amount. Personally I like the apps and have a few I use for different things.

I don’t do provisioning daily writs, but rather pick up provisioning recipes while farming for furnishing plans. They both drop from the same containers - nightstands, wardrobes, backpacks, urns, chests, desks, etc.

So that is another source for them if you want them for free.

My alt chars all have different levels of provisioning, despite the fact they're all at level 50 of provisioning, to make sure I can collect all the rare recipes for my main char - a specific provisioning level is always related to a certain amount of recipes.

On PC is much easier to keep a track of all your known recipes, for that I use the Master Recipe List.

For PS4 I once made a google doc to keep the records of my main char, using the recipe listings from the lists of:
    https://en.uesp.net/wiki/Online:Food_Recipes
    https://en.uesp.net/wiki/Online:Beverage_Recipes
    https://en.uesp.net/wiki/Online:Special_Recipes

But a while ago I discovered an app called ESO Helper (it's a free app for Android developed by our brother in arms @Dalnorea ) - it allows you to keep track of several stuff, per char, including recipes learned.

I think I tried ESO Helper on Android for a while, but entering data was taking far too much time.

So many things it tracks really need to be in the game in an easy format, especially on consoles. But they aren't and I am not holding my breath waiting.

Knowing you don't know a recipe should be there, to match the motifs which show ones you know and ones you do not.

Parts like this make it so much more complicated than it should be and take away from playing the rest of the game. I do enjoy repetitive questing, but have to limit it for things like this far too often.

(I have done the full Auridon and Alik'r Desert main quest line on almost all of my 22 or so characters, for example.
