Can you gain weapon skill line experience by JUST having the weapon equipped.

My question is pretty much included in the title.

When I say JUST the weapon I mean having the weapon equipped but absolutely none of the weapon skills on your hotbar.

Nope, you have to use that skill in order to get the xp. although you get xp for the weapon class regardless when having it equipped.

You have to have the skill equipped for class skills, but I thought by just equipping a 2h or 1h+B or bow etc... you do gain levels, the same as when your wearing armour.

EDIT: Obviously the skills themselves won't level until you spend a point, but the line does increase in level for having weapon/armour equipped.

follow up question - when you have 2 weapon slots that you can equip, but only one weapon can be "active" at a time - can anyone confirm if you gain xp for the weapon skill line for the weapon you have "equipped" but not "active" *i.e. it's the weapon that isn't currently equipped, but is the one that can be "swapped" in*

The weapon does level up if you use it while equipped.

I have used a 2hand axe without using any of the skills in it since I leveled up and it was leveling up. (didnt even unlock cleave but I unlocked Critical charge)

Only one can be active yes.. but you can get exp towards the current equiped weapon when you hand in quests.

So for example, kill your way via dual wield.. finish quest, equip 2h and hand in, you'll get see your 2h go up "usually" by a point even though you've never actually used it, can be handy at higher levels to push alternative skills up. You'll also see other skills topping up and rolling over into a new point as well. Including your main choice.

It really depends on the skill level of your skills. I think the exp you get for handing in quests, is applied across the board.. so lower level skills will roll over faster than higher level ones. But you'll obviously get more skill experience with weapons if you use them to kill something that gives you exp.

I am not sure on this, I have only reached level 12. I too would be interested in learning this as I do not want to gimp my main weapon choice by equipping a and using a 2nd weapon choice and vice-versa.

You can see this the first time you create a new character and skip starter island. Equip weapon talk to guy that sends you to the island gain EXP them the weapon levels up to LVL 2 as well as any skills you have equipped.

If you have a weapon but no skills, the skill line levels slowly as you gain xp no need to use it. If you have armor equipped and and you gain xp it levels up no need to get hit. The rate of advancement is determined by how much xp you get and how many skills you have equipped. For spells you must select at least one skill to start leveling or be lucky with the books.

PS . You do NOT gain xp for the tab that is not active. So when you turn in quest change to what you want leveled up quickly.
