I can't imagine complaining to another player about one pie or one mudball. ZOS put them there after all. Take it to ZOS. Those of us who loathe the mudballs and pies have to just put up with it during the events that encourage them and then just hope that things die down later, but complaining about it could never do anything but encourage trolling. But one? That's just an annoyance that ZOS added to an event, not something to yell at a player about. Besides, if you stay on your horse or stay interacting with something it won't interrupt what you're doing.

It's nothing about the color but more about someone using them to slow you down on your way to a chest or node so they can go take it first. Basically it's a PvP tool in PvE area. Of course the majority don't use it that way but it doesn't take many times of being griefed to make something an instant mood destroyer.

If they go around questing and shopping, being thrown mud/pie is mostly irrelevant. I personnaly don't give a damn.

BUT

If they are roleplaying and you throw a pie? Then, you're the bad person, not them, since they don't go around wrecking your playstyle. Throwing pies in that case is griefing, and should be reported.

The pies/mudball'ing happens every year during these festivals...

And dies down almost immediately afterwards.

I couldn't care less when people toss them at me. I'm in the area getting/turning in dailies or checking mail, bank, etc...

Plus, there are achievements associated to these and I figure, I got my chievo's years ago, who am I to frown upon the new players from getting theirs.

Genuinely curious here: how are other players supposed to know when someone is role playing versus just playing the game?

You have a point. After all, guards get angry and attack. If it's something that the constables consider assault then it does seem odd that players are expected to simply accept it with a smile.

Sometimes you can dodge behind a guard and get the thrower in trouble. xD

Ill never understand why people get so mad about it. Like i could maybe understand if it was the same person repeatedly, but if its just once get over it. If anything be mad at zos for having achievements tied to it

I'm not the most social person and even I get this is an MMO. There are things that other players do that really do annoy me,--a couple common examples would a player racing through a delve and aggro'ing everything and killing the boss so anyone else in the delve has to wait for it to respawn, that are clearly a choice on part of the player to not think of others playing the game, or things that ZOS has allow to fester or even encouraged either directly or by proxy via community reps like Alcast (who seriously needs to do something about his website being a malware trap btw--great community rep'ing there!), like players using public quest/story areas for their personal grinding/farming/bot zones, that make the game less enjoyable for others and may even make them avoid content that they paid to play too.

But something like this...well, this is an MMO. And sometimes I think people who play this game forget that. Let's be honest: the kind of people TESO attracts are on the younger side, who perhaps don't have other things to do with their lives like, um, have one, and are spending hours sitting in front of a computer. They may not be the best when it comes to having perspective and remembering the ESO world doesn't revolve around them. You have to share this game with other players and that means tolerating harmless things like mudballs and pies (just and be glad that ZOS actually made them more harmless--they use to interrupt you if you were interacting with something). Sometimes I see people complaining about the most pointless things, like players hopping around or having dumb character names, and I'm just like, really?

Anyhow with the pies, I do try to be considerate most of the time and target players who were wearing something Jester Festival themed, or have one of the festival character titles, or are hanging around the festival quest sites, because I get that not everyone cares about this event and it just seems more fun to share it with others who do.

Well, they talk, usually. And in character. They also describe what they are doing.
(IE : Greetings, my fair lady *waves hand, smiling*)
They are fairly easy to spot.

The simple answer is that having something thrown at you should be coded such as not to impact on your performance whether mounted or on foot, and there should be an option to disable the appearance of such effects so you would only be aware of it if you wanted to participate e.g. during an event.

Beyond that, as an isolated incident it's harmless and not a problem especially during an event, but deliberately following a player and repeatedly throwing pies/mud at him/her (especially when asked to stop) is clearly harassment (and I believe recognised as such by ZOS) and should be reported for appropriate action against the account - which if multiple reports are received should be quite severe and rightly so in my view. While there's plenty of room in the game for fun, there should be no room whatsoever for harassment of any kind, and what may seem trivial to one player may be game-breaking and/or mentally very disturbing to another player.
