Pacrooti + crate addiction. Ur killing me, Zenimax

I couldn't resist. I bought 15 crates. I want to open one every few days, it's nice to have crates in my inventory. But that Pacrooti! He makes it too tempting. He tells me "today is my lucky day" and he can see a "lucky aura" around me, he is "sure I will get something good". Then, giving in to my addiction, I open a crate. I get a bunch of stupid potions. Then I get angry.
"That's it!," I tell myself. "I'm opening another crate!".

I'm gaining a crate addiction, and I don't like what I'm becoming.

I find Pacrooti so sleazy that I thought he discourages people from buying those crates. [snip] But perhaps it does actually work in enticing people to spend more. Should never doubt ZOS when it comes to optimizing income.

    edit:

While loot boxes are totally not gambling, gambling help-resources might have some useful advice:

Be very careful or you will start losing a lot of gold and/or real money with that thought that "on next crate I will have a really great prize"

Know the odds, have realistic expectations, and only buy if it is worth it to you. As others have recommended elsewhere, it’s generally best to buy a lot from a single season that you particularly like rather than the same number across many seasons as in the latter case, you’ll be stuck with more collectibles you don’t like and fewer gems. As for Pacrooti, turn off the sound or dialogue specifically while opening crates if he bothers you.

Crates are a choice. I don't get crates for mainly 2 reasons.
    1. I am aware I will not get anything good for the gold/crowns I am willing to pay.
    2. I do not wish to support the crates themselves, because I dislike them on the theoretical level.

So just make your choice, are you on the side that thinks that crates are good for the game, and buys them, the one that thinks they are bad for the game, and still buys them, or the one that thinks they are bad for the game, and never buys them.

Crown Crates (loot crates) are gambling and a real problem for many people. They even could add in a warning page about the dangers of gambling addiction and getting help if you have an addiction. It should be shown every time before people buy Crown Crates.

Loot crates are a serious problem, even more so during quarantine. Hope the laws change world wide on loot crates.

Glad D2 is free of them

In the US we have all sorts of gambling, lottery tickets, fan duel, sports betting, whole cities devoted to gambling. If you have a problem maybe you need help. If you have a ounce of self control don't buy them. But there are people who like the crates. Who buy after they have looked at their budgets and decided to buy them. So if you have a problem seek real help don't come here to find it. Truth.

Pacrooti's dialogue is 110% written to prey on that impulse you're feeling, OP. If you are serious, and finding the temptation troubling, the advice to avoid crates entirely is probably best. Failing that, develop a personal limit to what you're willing to lose by gambling on said crates.

If you have the personal discipline to stay within your boundaries for gambling spending, then do that. If you do not, avoid the gamble entirely -- for your own sake!

It's a very real addiction, and for the people who truly struggle with it it can easily worsen (or ruin) their lives. Take an honest account of yourself, and decide what you need to do. Don't be too proud to seek help (or at least privately look at resources on the subject) if you need it.

    Good luck! : )

I've always held it against ZOS that they took a beloved hireling character and turned him into a sleazy crate-pusher. The soundbites they wrote for him really are glaringly manipulative, and I always have to grit my teeth a little whenever I open my free Twitch crates. It's especially ironic and slightly disturbing considering that part of Pacrooti's hireling narrative is overcoming a gambling problem, so you'd think he'd know better than to try to lure other people into it. At the very least, the Pacrooti we know and love deserves better than being a shill (unless it's for mole asses).

in all seriousness i hope that things will get better for you OP. i recommend grinding up a bunch of gold and using that for crates. if you enjoy the process of farming gold then it’s a win win for everyone.

Pacrooti has never said anything that *encouraged* me to buy more crates, in fact he ticks me off so much it takes me weeks to feel like trying again. His timing is perfect to be as mocking as possible--his little amazed gasp when I win my third copy of a trashy tattoo I didn't want in the first place, his "I've never seen suck luck!" when I get something I think is butt ugly. If we had the chance to win an opportunity to Blade of Woe that sleazeball I would buy a lot more crates.

In the very least they could be like Paladins crates. No dupes or infinite small rewards. If there's 15 things in a crate and you buy 15 you get everything.

    Until then:

Pacrooti isn't even real. He's just a bunch of pixels on a screen, just like the stuff in the crown crates. You're being conned into paying actual money, for things that don't exist when you turn off your computer, more or less.

It’s a very manipulative ploy, having a npc there to distract from 1. It's gambling and 2. It’s a horrible addiction.

I've only bought Crates once, 15 stack. I got a two of the Psijic mounts out of them Cat and Wolf. I haven't bought anymore since, didn't want to test my "luck" any further.

I only buy crates about once every 1-2 years.

Only reason I spent money on crates was for Argonian themed items.

It’s been about a year since and Blackwood will undoubtedly have Argonian items....S***

But there are also many other examples. You buy a ticket with "real" money, watch a film in the cinema and consume a story with fictional characters, then the film is over and you go home. What is left of it? Just the memory and 2 hours of (possibly) good entertainment.

No. Tickets to cinema are completely different from gambling, even if the prize for gambling has no real value. There're no cimena addicts that can spend their whole fortune on movies and no underhanded manipulations to coerce people into going to cinema again and again and spend more and more.

My intent was not to compare gambling or lottery with buying tickets for whatever entertainment, but it was about the use of real money for the purchase of a non-material value.

This whole discussion is so difficult because for most people they have complete self control in this situation and can either go their entire time without feeling the urge to buy the crates or can buy and pass as they like.

As someone who’s had issues with addictions from close family I get why it isn’t always that easy for some people and IMO ZoS should implement something in the game to essentially opt out, cap or freeze usage in of the crates. Similar systems work in bookies but that would essentially see them accept they are gambling which I’m sure they don’t want to do so they will continue to do nothing.

Leaving the onus solely on the player whilst creating something which is a real money sink hole is really poor practise from ZoS. As far as OP, honestly I’d say if you feel this way remove yourself from the temptation completely. Ultimately you gain nothing from these but can lose lots if it gets out of control.

Many have called them out many times for their abusive practices before but as long as there is a profit to be made and they're allowed to do so, it will continue.

Also doesn't help they have countless enablers who argue in their favor.

I don't buy them on principle bc I've known people with lack of impulse control who've destroyed their whole lives bc of it but in the end, this is the messed up world we live in and we can't expect anyone to save us from ourselves.

If you really want to make a change in your life, you need to sit down and write a plan and begin to take steps to make that happen. If you believe you may need help managing an addiction, please reach out before it's too late.

In 5 years I've never purchased a single crate. While I understand it's a choice people are free to make, I've always felt it to be a rather slimy way to leverage addictive gambling impulses for profit.

Its not slimy. You may not always get what you really wanted but you're still getting items for the crowns you paid. Sometimes you end up with both pets and mounts in the same 4 crates which ends up being a huge bargain. I've taken looks at the end value of items I've received after buying a 15 pack and it ends up being well worth the price.

And even THEN the crown gem accrual ends up letting you outright buy what you wanted.

I've regretted some of my purchases in the past. I learned that if I am more careful I don't regret my purchases nearly as often. I still make mistakes, but not to the point that I blame someone else for the purchase/decision I made.

Loot boxes are not a great value proposition. Don't buy them unless you are willing to accept the worst outcome, which is a few stacks of consumables that you can convert to gems. I have bought a few over the years, but only as a form of entertainment where I enjoyed the novelty of opening loot crates.

I'm not saying loot crates aren't gambling. I'm saying loot crates aren't the reason anyone gambles. The truth is, gambling can be fun. Stay within your means, and enjoy the gambling experience. Otherwise don't buy loot crates.
