There are very few skills than any role always needs. The key is to have it available and know the times you will need it and have it for those situations. If you're asking if the range taunt is on my bar nearly all the time, the answer to that is yes, but I'm also not against swapping it out if it's not necessary and something else can make better use of that slot for any particular encounter.

As a DK, Inner rage is my main taunt (use poinson breath to apply breach).

Once used to that, you don't run up to puncture enemies, you spit on them from afar.

Very useful to have a ranged taunt for adds or when the boss jumps/charges away from you. I still use puncture with shield but frost staff tanking is fine too.

Yes, it helps for times when you are grouping up adds and some bigger adds don’t pull and you don’t want to move to lose AOE’s of the dps to run and taunt a larger add and all the adds run out of the aoe following you. Easier to spit at them from a distance and have them come to you.

Stay safe and enjoy the journey 😊

DK chains can taunt. Somehow it works almost 100% of the time.

With a very tight bar space, I actually rarely have ranged taunt for most of my encounters with my s/b tanks, only encounters I know I will need it.

It’s coded so that 60% of the time it works every time.

I think it really depends on the encounter to be honest. Space is really tight on my offtank front bar, so I often take off the range taunt when I know something else is going to be more useful. My main tank is an entirely different story though. I will have both ranged and melee taunts slotted because my main tank has one job - to control boss/mobs, whereas my offtank usually has two jobs - tank AND heal.

In a trial setting, my offtank may drop the melee taunt in favor of having only the ranged taunt if my job is to just pull trash away from the group while they DPS, or grab aggro and pull it away from the main tank (final boss in NHoF). So it is really just situational IMO, and also depends on what kind of tank you have.

If I'm being really lazy and the content is easy, probably just keep both the ranged and melee taunts both slotted.

I will often swap between chains and a ranged taunt in 4 man. Need is a strong word, but they are useful. Most of the time, your goal is to put adds in a neat little pile on top of the boss, and taunt anything that can one shot your DPS or healer. Whatever you need to run to accomplish that is okay as long as it gets the job done.

THIS. Think in terms of the task a tank must accomplish rather than the tool. Getting the job done is all that matters. That being said, a range taunt is often an important tool.

I have Inner Fire and Puncture slotted so I get ranged and melee taunt options, and if I'm out of one resource I have the other to work with. Sometimes I'll pull a target to me and use the melee taunt while other times I'll just use that illusion spell to make them wanna punch me in the face.

I want you to add taunt to Empowering Chains and Silver Leash.

Bad idea as Empowering Chains is a gap closer that applies Empower. I think you meant unrelenting grip? In that case it is still a bad idea since I know a few DKs who use it for magicka efficiency since it refunds the cost if the target can't be pulled while still applying damage.

Yes if there are adds. But there are fights that you dont really need one, like Asylum Olms, but its still good to have one in case some of the adds suddenly need to be grabbed.

A taunt is mandatory for a tank, a ranged taunt just makes it easier to taunt a target without having to be nearby. In some fights you might only have 1 target so you're always in melee range but in general a ranged taunt makes it a lot easier.

Do tanks always need a range taunt?

Absolutely not. It is possible to slot and un-slot a ranged taunt depending on the content being tackled. There are some dungeons/trials/bosses which DO need a ranged taunt. But there are more that dont.
