Why did Skill Points have to be cleared?

I didn't memorize my setups prior to this update, but I haven't seen anything new.
Why did all my Skill Points have to be cleared? Couldn't they have been left as they were, along with the "free adjustment" time we have now?
That would have saved a lot of time!
I don't expect to have all my alts setup again before the "free" 2 weeks of reset is complete.

✭✭✭✭✭There was a bug where some people got extra skill points through the old CP system.
