Which gear?

So... I'm tinkering with my Templar. He's a theme character, so how I've built him is likely pretty unique. He's thoroughly a hybrid character, and is set up to use both magicka and stamina, according to my whims. I realize this will limit his damage output somewhat, but I'm fine with that. My goal now is to optimize his damage output while remaining in concept. What I'm looking for is advice regarding which weapons I give him. There are a few possibilities.

Right now, I'm using the Agility set (eg. Battleaxe of Agility). The 2 part bonus adds Max Stamina.

What I'm wondering is if there's a better choice? Would I be better off giving him something like the Assassin's Guile weapon, where the 2 part bonus is 833 Critical? Would I be better off giving him a weapon with the 2 part bonus increasing weapon damage? In other words, what's the best bang for his buck.

I expect to use a set where the only bonus achieved is the 2 part bonus. Given that, what set would you all recommend? What set will provide the most damage output, given that it will only get the 2 part bonus?

Oh, and I should say, I plan to use staves as well, under the same considerations, just with Magicka instead of Stamina.

Hybrid characters are not ideal, but if you are insistent, try Shacklebreaker or Pelinal's Aptitude. I would suggest running one set to the full 5 piece bonus on armor, with a monster helm set, then using your 2 pc set on front bar and a full 5 piece set on backbar, allowing you to still receive full value from running 2 5 piece sets and a monster helm. There are also plenty of Arena weapons that grant useful 2pc bonuses that you could run on front or back bar instead. If you are planning on using a 2pc on both front and back, consider Armor of the Trainee or another 3 piece set. Mother Ciannat is a great choice of monster helm for Templars, activating on their spammable, restoring Magicka, and being much more consistent than Iceheart, especially after the critical chance nerfs. You could run the character as a tank, in which case going SnB on front and Ice staff on back would be perfectly viable and indeed expected, allowing you to recover both resource pools with Heavy attacks while retaining durability.

Ya, I have 2 5 piece sets equipped now (Ancient Dragonguard medium and Undertaker heavy... but I also keep a set of Shacklebreaker, though I rarely use it). The only thing I don't have is a set of weapons for a bonus from THOSE.

What I need to know is, what is the best set to get if I'm only going to get the 2 piece bonus? Should I get something that adds Max Magicka/Stamina, or should I get something that adds Critical chance? What about Weapon or Spell Damage? Which bonus would yield the greatest damage benefit?

Also, it's highly unlikely I'll be able to get any of the superultramegasilly rare gear, like the Arena or Monster sets, as I don't generally do such content.

Ideally, what I'm after is something that can be crafted, or found overland (or in public dungeons).

If you've got magicka and stamina split then Pelinal's isn't much use - it'll simply mean you get the highest of no weapon or no magicka damage. If you put most of the attributes into one of the two then it has rather more uses. It'll stick suck - but less if you stack everything into one (ie char magicka, magicka damage sets, pelinals, or char stamina. stamina damage sets and pelinals). There are a few sets (eg Noble duelist) that are kind of dual boosts but nothing particularly great I can think of. Also as Pelinals only affects damage (not penetration or crit) you'll have a bunch of other problems with CP assignment.

If your damage output is going to suck anyway you might as well stack proc sets instead (mad tinkerer, defiler, venomous smite etc) but that might not be your theme,

The game hates magicka/stamina hybrids for damage purposes. As tanks they can work but because almost everything scales off one of the two pools and there are no sets that meaningfully combine the two a hybrid is going to mostly suck.

You can build a toon optimized heavily one way that still makes use of the other type of weapon and skills. You have a base magicka and stamina pool and you can do a lot with that pool, especially if you slot rejuvenation and/or are careful about the jewellery enchantments. In a sense that is how the tank setup often works. You don't need a lot of magicka to switch to staff and wall of elements for the debuffs, or to cast the odd magicka based self heal or other skill. In fact I generally keep magicka based heals on stam toons even when there are other options because the point I need a panic self heal is usually when stamina runs out.

Perhaps I'm not being clear. I'm not concerned about optimizing the character's armour. All I really need to know is whether to get weapons with a 2 part set bonus that:
    -Increases Max Stamina or Magicka
    -Increases Weapon or Spell Damage
    -Increases Critical Chance
-or increases some other stat or attribute that will increase damage that I don't know about.

For example, if I have a 2 handed axe that adds Max Stamina, and I have a 2 handed axe that adds Critical Chance, which one would be the better choice?

I know, I could build the character more efficiently overall, but that's not the goal. I just need to know which attribute I want from the weapons I carry.

If you really, really only want something from among those options, I would say critical chance would be your best best, as it's universally useful, applies to both Stamina and Magicka and scales damage better than W/S damage or Stamina/Magicka, provided you're using critical damage boosts. However, I would suggest looking at some of the Arena weapons instead of using only 2 pieces from a 5pc set, as their Perfected versions grant stats on the 1pc, along with having a powerful or useful enhancement to a specific ability on the second.

You can try 1 piece Slimecraw for the crit and 1 piece Domihaus for the 1k Stam and Mag, new moon acolyte 5 pcs, and a stam 5 pcs of your choice. Then slot radiant aura on the offensive bar u stay on more, slot barrier from support on ur stam bar with the support passive +10% mag recovery so that after you cast your mag skills and swap it recovers mag quicker for u to cast when u swap back.

    - New Moon Acolyte gives more damage than Ancient Dragonguard.
    - Blackrose Arena dual wield buffs overall resistance and damage.
    - Balorgh is a nice damage boost if you run low cost ult.

The remaining 5 pieces depends on your style, either go defense (which opens up every set, assuming you slot jewelry/1 armor/off-bar weapon), or pick more stats (Mechanical Acuity, Innate Axiom, Assassin's guile, Schacklebreaker, Trainee, Stuhn's favor, Red Eagle's fury, Legacy or Karth, Oblivion's Foe, all have decent 2-3-4 set bonuses that can benefit hybrids, and leave slots open for a back bar weapon set).

This patch hybrids will be a bit stronger!

If you want both spell and magicka damage, there are some sets which give a bonus to both, for example Innate Axiom and Oblivion's Foe. This might be stronger on a hybrid build than Agility. If you want crit chance, you could have a look at New Moon's Acolyte.

Best choices would probably Arena weapons, if those are out of reach, it doesn't really matter that much. For a pure stamina character Agility would be best choice, for a pure magicka character Willpower.

Ok that makes a lot more sense with the extra background.

Two parts trainee is a decent health and magicka buff (about 1400 each) and short of monster helms probably the best two piece option for magicka (the 3rd part gives stamina). Some of the monster helm/shoulder sets will give you more valuable effects probably.

For monster shoulders you can get keys from easy non-veteran dungeon undaunted runs, and the helms and shoulders are available on and off for lots of gold from the golden vendor not just vet dungeons. If you are in a guild a lot of guilds have people who will happily do a partial carry on one of the easier vet dungeons (and some vet ones are easier than normal DLC dungeons) to get you a first monster helm.

Dungeon sets are also account bound if you have another character more suited to such things.

For damage you'd also be better in all medium or all light armour with the right choice of passive skills on those skill lines. Medium passives boost weapon damage and crit a fair bit if you have them all and the pieces. Light similarly for spell crit and damage.

And there are skills you can slot depending upon your class and stam/magicka that give you further damage boosts - slotting expert hunter (or one of the morphs) gives you major savagery and optionally minor beserk from flank attacks. On the magicka bar slotting magelight works kind of the same way. As a templar biting jabs can also provide major savagery (stam morph),

Basically you want to try and get major sorcery + major prophecy up when possible on magicka and major savagery/berserk on the stamina side. They stack with the minor ones and you can get some of those on templar from things like the illuminate passive.

As I say, right now, I'm using the weapons of Agility and Willpower, because they boose Max Stamina and Magicka respectively, which in turn increases damage.

However, I have a strange feeling that using weapons that add Critical Chance might actually increase damage MORE...

And I'm uncertain what the effect of increasing Weapon and Spell Damage would be...

Add to that, I don't know if there's some OTHER attribute that would be more desirable.

What I'm kind of seeing is that Agility and Willpower would still be the preferred choice. Is that correct?
