There already is a type of soft SBMM to place players in matchesNo. Implementing skill based matchmaking (SBMM) will directly result in longer wait times for the already lengthy Battlegrounds queue as the game tries to match players of equal skill only and fails miserably in doing so; we have Emperors in this game who might as well be Citizens in terms of how little they actually played PvP to obtain their title, two players with the same rank could have wildly different ability. Sure, I don't think players who have been playing PvP since this game came out should be getting matched with level 20 folks who just wanted to enjoy a fun game after a long day at work, but seeing what skills, sets, and maneuvers more experienced players use can help many people see what they need to be doing to improve and strive to emulate. Also, smurfing is a thing; this wouldn't prevent experienced players from queueing just to crush lower tier players, they'd just be able to pump out dozens of clickbait videos like "Unranked to Grand Overlord??? 35/0/1 CRUSHING the Competition!!?1" that much more easily.
Unfortunately the bg player base is too small for such systems.
After playing bgs for about a week in the current system, I started to get 10 - 20 min queues and played with the same 3 - 4 players (+ randoms from lower mmr) every match.
If bgs was more populated I'd be all for a more complex system. But in the current form I'd prefer an even more simple system than the one we have just to cut down queue times.

Or...implement a good system with worthwhile rewards and rankings and the population will naturally increase because there’s a real system there to support it.
or maybe it is so small because it is so bad?
