Tanking help

Elthamor
Elthamor
Greetings fellow ESO players,
As the title suggests i am currently thinking of creating a new Tank toon BUT with the upcoming racial passives, and given the fact that i want my tank to be more hybrid, i don't want to go with the classic and traditional option of Nord. You see, i want to have a character that can easily do pvp with somewhat high dmg as well as with some tweaks be able to do decent magicka based dps on trials. I know i know having this tank immediately renders me unable to be a good tank for veteran Trials. But, i.e as a breton will i be able to tank dlc veteran dungeons etc AND mayhaps trials ^^? Breton necro so as to change to necro magicka dd if i want for either pve or pvp.
Of course i have the same question regarding a nord magicka necro. Will he be able to go to veteran trials and do decent damage?
Thanks again all

Races for tanks are not as critical in pve IMO. Some of the best end game, top score players have proved it. Woeler for example ran a khajit dk. I've done vet content with a dunmer dk tank.

Race doesn't really matter at high CP even today. Racial passive bonuses save you putting CP in some spots, racial passive weaknesses make you put them somewhere else. In some cases maybe you need to tune your jewellery different.

If you have a Breton tank then you get some better built in magicka but will need to put more CP into resistances, if you are a nord it's the reverse. Ultimately most of your character is gear and CP.

I have a Breton templar magtank hybrid and it works fine. In fact it works so well I wear half light gear (mother's sorrow) half heavy (battalion defender), and no greaves or chest piece when doing normal dungeons to make it more fun and to better fit the undaunted vibe by doing dungeons in underpants.

When you first level up a character and have low CP then racial passives are a big thing - but not later.

Some PvP is different - battlegrounds or no CP campaigns for example

First of all thanks for your answer. Both of ya. I see your point and i have to admit it's a fresh perspective every1 is saying nord only etc. I've got a question though, i saw you mentioned normal dungeons. what about the veteran dlc ones? Do you manage those as well as a breton templar tank?

Another thing to consider is whether you have a dedicated group. My tank runs with a particular healer, and we often pug dps for our (very casual) dungeons.

My point being that group composition can be very important to consider in more challenging content.

Simple plan: Confine your choice to races where all the passives give full value to tanks. E.g., no spell power or weapon power bonuses, as tanks care little about those.

Breton, Nord and Imperial meet that criterion.

The bigger issue would be the fact it's a templar - not the race - so you need someone else providing a chunk of the buffs.

DK tanks were always the best more or less. Race basically didn't matter for that class. Some years ago if you wanted to play as a Nightblade or Sorcerer tank Race may have mattered a slight bit more because you wanted all the help you could get. Currently though, it really depends on the content you want to do. They all 'work' but some classes will still do much better than others depending on the fight requirements.

Personally I can't comment on Vet DLC Dungeons because I havent done them myself, however I don't think you'd have any real problems if the rest of your teammates also contribute where you might be weak.

If you're casual player then you can do any role on 1 toon, including vet dlc dungeons and some vet trials. But dont expect to be competitive and be ready to receive some criticism. I main magden and he's setup for pure dps, all attributes in mag, shadow mundus etc. I'm using Argonian but race don't matter much. I'm on PC so I can use addon to swap skills and gear with 1 click. I carry tank and healer sets and can fill any role. I wouldn't go tank vet dlc trials but I've tanked vSS pug and tank vHRC often. Since I dont change my cp, mundus or attributes, I have to use selfish sets like plague doc, leeching etc to get enough hp and survivability. I've tanked all vet dlc dungeons no probs with pugs. I don't provide any buffs other than major breach and some heals but I stay alive, taunt bosses and hold them still and stack adds.
I pull 85k as dps, 1 click and I'm tank with 40k+ hp and 27-28k resistances, double ice staffs, 30k+ max mag, 15k max stam. Only need stam for rolldodge, for everything else use mag.
