Perception on builds and sets.

I feel like I've tried a lot of different combo's of sets with my Magcro. Sadly I have come to this conclusion: It kinda appears like the differences in damage dealt are negligible at best :( I'm assuming that's by design to be honest. I've found this cycle to be kind of a bummer:
  • Get new set pieces
  • Try them out as is (no attribute or enchant tweak
  • Enchant and transmute to match your build
  • Use and realize there's practically no difference
  • Also realize you've sunk a bunch of resources into a set that really didn't make much difference

That being said, I think a lot of set's DO impact maybe..play style. For example, Selitrix and Skoria are wildly different and allow me to just jump into a mob safely with Selitrix, and conversely cause more damage to a boss safely with Skoria.

Am I off base here? Should I even bother at looking at Overwhelming Surge or Burning Spellweave if really, I won't see much difference? Thanks.

I would agree, but this is a benefit. There are millions of different builds that can be successful. Generally, you can have builds that are very good at certain things.

For Cyrodil, I have a build for clearing resources that is not as powerful as the build I have for duels.

It's even an advantage to see that DC or AD are balling up and change gear to ball-group focused sets and skills.

One handy tool is the build editor that UESP hosts: https://en.uesp.net/wiki/Special:EsoBuildEditor

Essentially it allows you to virtually create any build you like so that you can see the different stats, how much benefit your buffs will provide, quickly change mundus or race to see if you like a combination better, and so on. Mocking up all my builds in the editor first has saved me a ton of farming time and a ton of gold over the years as one of the things that really interests me is theorycrafting for pvp, plus it's something I can do in my downtime at work.

You do have to have pretty good knowledge about playing your class/spec to be able to create builds this way but it's a great way to kind of simulate what you'll be able to get out of a particular setup.

Also if you want to be able to save your builds and share them or look at them later you'll need to create an account there first, just fyi.

Funnily enough I was JUST there...only to find that the 45 minutes of work putting in my info wasn't saved. Honestly I've never really had much success with that site :(

What you described about ESO is accurate, and it is by design as it's what sets ESO apart from the rest of the vertical gear progression MMORPGs. There is no "best" setup in ESO. Only best for a single task. And even then, you have maybe 2 or 3 different ways to accomplish said task.

What we have is a horizontal gear progression system that gives you options and choices. it's not about item level or gear score...it's about the end result. If the end result is to achieve 70k DPS on a particular boss fight, however you chose to get there is for you to decide. Whatever gear combination, skill setup, race, mundus, food choice...however you get there is your choice. If the end result is to stay alive as long as possible with as many things attacking you as possible, then however you get there is your choice.

As daunting as it might seem for newer players who have only experienced WoW or FF14 or something similar, the thing you'll eventually realize is how free you are to play how you want in ESO. We're not locked into archetype cages, we are only defined by the choices of abilities and gear we wear. The last MMORPG that gave players this level of freedom was SWG, and there aren't many others like it, ESO has been the closest thing so far.

As I said you'll want to create an account first. But also I noticed that for me at least it depends on what browser you're using. I can only get it to work on Firefox properly, it doesn't really function right in Chrome for me. Hopefully that helps.

    Thanks @Goregrinder and @Kartalin . Yes...chrome/edge don't work so hot..and finding no info was after I logged in :( Ah well :)

That helps actually with the armor/skills setups....least I'm not off kilter in my thinking thanks :)
