Is draining their life force any worse than setting them on fire, electrocuting them, impaling them on a spear of light, summoning cliff racers to maul them and so on? It all sounds pretty painful and at the end of it they're dead.

Morality in TES games is more about who you kill and why than how exactly you do it. Of course if your character slowly tortured someone to death that would be worse than killing them quickly, but we don't get that option, even 'long' battles are generally over in couple of minutes.

So yes I think it is possible to play a good nightblade, or at least no worse than other characters and better than some. (The ones who do go around murdering innocents for what they've got in their pockets for a start.)

The only RP my stamina nightblade has ever done is stabbing massive amounts of people in cyrodiil and selling pots for a living.
    pvp sucks.

My NB is my main, who has seen/done pretty much everything in the game, at around 39,000 achievement points.

I play them chaotic good, with a utilitarian sense of a greater good for quest choices. Do all they can to help as many people as possible in all factions regardless of allegiances. Keep as many people alive and make as many friends as possible.

But they also pick-pick-stabbed their way to 1,000,000 stolen gold in items fenced, so. It's hard to consistently RP on a completionist character.

Taking two of my nightblades (both level 50) as an example, one is a dark elf assassin with dual wield daggers who has completed the Thieves Guild and is working through the Dark Brotherhood, the other is a wood elf archer who hasn't done either of those and has never sneaked anywhere in his life. I guess it depends on whether you're a competitive min-maxer kind of player but if not then it's certainly possible to be a good nightblade, it just depends on your choice of content and skills.

I tend to play most of my NBs as... morally ambiguous. Given quest options, they don't usually pick the options that I would consider most evil or wrong, but they do pick the options that seems most convenient to them (to the extent that there's any real difference in the options). With the exception of my one DB alt per server, they don't indiscriminately kill NPCs and never kill innocents. Even those two have a twisted but firm sense of personal morality and only kill innocents they consider bad (or at least deeply, deeply annoying in some way); they would never, for example, go in and kill half of Shimmerene on a whim (you know who you are).

My few other NBs I play either as Thieves Guild Robin Hood types, or a couple have what you could call Inigo Montoya style personal vengeance backstories rather than a general bloodlust.

The main difference between my NBs and say, a warden or templar healer, is that my NBs will always defend themselves. Whereas, if I accidentally trigger a steal action or something that sets off an innocent (rare, but it happens), then some of my healers will just sit down and die rather than fighting back, so they never get the Murder achievement.

    Tl; dr: it's all relative.

You can play as a roguish mage. That’s how I see my mag nb. My stam is almost like a hunter in my eyes.

Maybe for RP your character has a past.

Shadowscales are one of the most noble nightblades i ever seen.

I find your question to be strange. You know... Warrior kills people. Killing is bad. All warriors are evil. No? Nightblades are not forced to be evil. Do they have bad reputation? Probably yes. Can they serve to some noble purposes? Yes. Their primary feature - Shadow Magic

Nightblades are spellcasters who use their magics to enhance mobility, concealment, and stealthy close combat. They have a sinister reputation, since many nightblades are thieves, enforcers, assassins, or covert agents.

Spell and shadow are their friends. By darkness they move with haste, casting magic to benefit their circumstances.

Nightblades are adventurers and opportunists with a gift for getting in and out of trouble. Relying variously on stealth, blades and speed, they thrive on conflict and misfortune trusting to their luck and cunning to survive.
