Because having a combat pet adds to variety and fun, not excluding social interactions. I hope, I could answer your question.

I would be surprised if "thief" and "knight" were much more than flavor. I suspect they will both have the same AI and behavior options.
Why companions in a mmo game? This game is just so casual... nothing for end game players.
Because MMO should not force people into social interactions for 90% of content. Because "MMO" abbreviation does not mean "there should be no combat pets (which companions basically are)". 90% of the content IS solo and doesn't require social interactions, and then we get companions because of people whining and complaining that they want to do group content but couldn't POSSIBLY do said group content with another human being in an MMO because ewww other people.

More like "ewww elitests."
I cant seem to grasp how other people like to be lead as fast as possible through an area meant to be explored as defined by the word Dungeon and by quest text.
How about all you people who want to play with other people just continue to keep doing so? lol
