I really hope we will see a large variety of companions.
Not just Mary the Dunmer lady; how about a Daedra or undead thrall for the sorcerers and necromancers among us?
I really love the idea of my Necromancer running around with a draugr or skeleton that she has decked out with powerful gear.
Companions with stories are pretty cool, but I think something a little more generic like the things I mentioned would be cool.
If we were to REALLY push the limits of the system, having our alt characters be useable as companions would also be really cool.

Gorgoneus✭✭✭LoL Known how bethesda do their business, it will be 1 trashy poor looking free companion for cpmpleting story and alot different (even some supernatural creatures) companions for a real money (good chunk of real money). Just as services and house gouests before.
So you must buy this chapter first and buy each new companion after, no thanks, bethesda, you are not gonna milk me again.3 -

I'm not sure how things will work around crowded areas like writ turn in sites etc. I remember traveling with a mod companion in Skyrim. When we entered town, she said, "I've got things to do and will see you when you're ready to leave town." That could work but raises rp concerns for those who want to have a drink at the tavern with their companion - so tweaking/adjustiing would definitely be required. Hopefully the devs will craft a good solution that works for all.
As far as seeing the same NPC on everyone (like you do with bankers/merchants), I'm hoping they follow the existing NPC quest companion model. That is, when you travel with Abnur Tharn, Varandis, Lyris or some other NPC during quests, what other players see with you is a generic NPC like 'guild mage' or 'fighter' in generic gear. ✭✭✭✭The biggest worry of all is that in the end the same companions will be walking around everywhere and you can hardly imagine that the developers did not also think about it. Ok, in the case of merchants and bankers they obviously don't care, but I would be very surprised if it is not considered now, since it goes about a major feature.Though, they now have until June to come up with a solution...0
