They said it is unlikely to improve performance.
Ive said for a while now that its not as simple as changing servers.
The performance issues are deeper than hardware

New servers does NOT equal better performance!

Best hardware in the world won't help you if your code is a giant mess of spaghetti...though I am trying to be optimistic they are working on that too.

I know it's an unpopular opinion on here, but I genuinely do think they are trying. I mean, they're not getting it right very often and not spending enough time listeneing to the people who actually know the game best, but I do believe they want to make it better

New servers and a reduction of calculations during combat should help performance

They just want to increase capacity I'm guessing, maybe to stream line the patching, but regardless, she specifically stated it will not have any effect on performance. That is literally the end of Cyro. What can they possibly do after that? Groups aren't going back to 24, cross heals can't come back, it's actually over.

    Was stadia worth it?

Why, do you think Stadia is adding to the current poor server performance?

New just means replacing the old, it does not mean superfast to improve performance.

Expect the same dire performance, but with added 'maintenance due to server change' banners every other day.

They are making an serious effort to resolve the issues and that makes me happy.

Replace servers would be the awesome. This game is so old now that @ZOS_GinaBruno can't remember how long it's been XD

I think it will be upgrades but, If there is new hardware coming in yay!

Most of the latency you're experiencing isn't server related, it's the hops along the way.

I don't see anyone getting 25 ping unless they're plugged in directly to the building.
Just because you don't like the way something is doesn't necessarily make it wrong...

I am very far from IT sector. For me new server + same program > old server + same program.
WHy the new server do not improve the performance of the play? I am not sarcastic or else, just curoius.

Were getting new servers but its unlikely to help performance according to gina on the eso live. Sounded like it was mainly just so we dont have hardware failures.

Not really sure why they would bother telling us and getting us excited for just swapping out servers with no real upgrade.

i missed the part where she said the new servers wouldnt improve performance... (ie i dont believe she said that at all.. there was talk about another feature that wouldnt improve performance tho...)

That being said i do remember when they were talking about the new CP system and all the changes being made there to try and improve performance they mentioned that they are removing the group only heals in pvp because it didnt affect performance as much as they hoped...

New hardware will improve performance.. we as players might not notice it too much.. things might just be that tiny bit more snappier here and there.. unless of course the "new" hardware is the exact same specs as they are already running.... then yes it wont make any difference...

but if the new processors can handle more instructions and do them faster there WILL be performance increases ;).. Ping wont make too much difference at all tho

Maybe they buy some second hand server from Microsoft... :-)

They said that this is mostly for more stable game without server failers so I guess it means less problems with login problems, maintance failures, etc. so still good change

This was the bit that had me 'whooping' tbh, even though he said they won't really impact performance, at the very least they will help the longevity of the game.
  • cs_spitfireb16_ESO
They can promise new servers but this means they can in no way promise improved (lagless) performance.

They can't really know what effect new servers are going to have on performance just yet.

Also it could simply mean they will add more capacity to accommodate more new content and more players. But not to accommodate a lower ping. ZOS got their own weird priorities as always usually to make more profit.
    The simple one.

Ping is a lot more about connection than hardware, just saying...

Wrong. In ESO's case ping mostly depends on how fast the server (ZOS hardware) can process the requests it gets from all the players and game states.
Ping simply means that your game is checking to see how many milliseconds it takes for it to get the expected response from the server. If the server is slow it just takes much longer.
    The simple one.

As an IT guy, I think we should wait for at least a little bit of performance improvement on the server-side. Because replacing 6 years old server just enough to increase response times on connected components like storage or network switches. in that 6 years a lot of things change for example basic HBA (Host Bus Adaptor) increases limits to 4 Gbps to 16 Gbps. Also, CPU architecture is more advanced when compared to 6 years old hardware. İf they are replacing these server specs like CPU to CPU of course, we will see a performance improvement.
I don't think that they will calculate raw performance demand on current servers and replace them with the same amount of power (not specs). In an example ın 2014 intel CPU's has Ivy Bridge with 10 core's with SMT it has 20 cores and probably each server MOBO can handle 2 of them. With that regard, you have 22 nm 40 threats. current generation Intel-based servers (I don't think they will use AMD EPIC) have much more core density and also IPC improvement. ı believe they don't buy top of specs servers but even if they are trying to buy up to date system, they will return as a performance upgrade at least we can weapon swap maybe some instances on Cyrodiil :)

They said they don't expect much improvement in performance, which makes it sound like the buying the cheapest servers money can buy.

Ping or latency is more afected by the distance to the servers and eficient travel routes. So you shouldnt see much ping improvment if you have a +200 ping it is because 2 thing 1 you are far from server solution none other than you move close to server, server move to you or another server is close to you. 2 very ineficient routes solution: you have to change how you provider make conection from your location to the servers that are located in Texas

What we want is servers that can better handle heavy load. The problem has always been more lag with more players, the servers can't handle it.

Better / newer physical servers would mean better virtual servers in their farm(s). It could translate to quicker patches & software / operating system updates, which would reduce down time for people on patch night.

It would also mean a more stable platform for the game code to run on - that would be a good thing to have.

Lag is still largely dependant on how far YOU are from the server YOU connect to. It's physics. To gain improvements there, you'd need (ranked from most unlikely to most likely):
    1) move closer to the servers
    2) have a better ISP with fewer hops and better infrastructure
    3) better internet technology delivered to your house (i.e. upgrade from ADSL2+ to NBN)
    4) a better modem (they get old, parts heat up, get inefficient)
    5) a better PC (hardware & operating system)

True more so in PVP also reduction in calculation per players should reduce latency even more in those situations, also if you have more capable hardware you can plan new things for the software = new thing to play with

I don't know... I always thought if a game has more servers distributed worldwide, latency would reduce. But then again, I'm no engineer so it's all a supposition

Thank you ZOS for finally listening and paying to fix this issue! I've long been distressed that ESO runs at 100+ ping while all its major competitors (WoW, SWTOR, FFXIV. GW2) run at 25-40 ping. Australian players are even praying for the ~100 ping ratings that the rest of us deal with.

If this finally fixes the game's performance issues, I'll happily buy the new Chapter on day one, regardless of my relative lack of interest in companions, and my desire for melee magicka weapons. I skipped Greymoor at launch and waited for a deep sale due to a similar lack of interest, but will happily buy Blackwood at launch to support this move if it fixes the issue

I think I'll destroying your dreams, but...

They mentioned they upgrade the server to modern infrastructure, but they also mentioned this will not affect the performance itself. So for me it sounds more like a server-switch, before the old ones might "die".

I only care about loading times...

No idea why our clients sit there for 1/2 or more of the loading time just waiting for network.

Couldn't they move game data to a separate server? That would probably decrease load on the game servers and even cross playing might be easier to implement - at least you could use the same account on EU/NA servers before you log in.

Have we taken a moment to consider that they are not going to straight up say on a stream that is for selling the game, especially to brand new players, that the server performance is pants right now?

Wait until the upgrade at least guys. It was a marketing event last night. They were not going to say anything that even remotely puts them in a negative light, as that would just put off potential new customers.

I try not to take everything so literally.
