Base game, yes.
SWTOR companions were pretty dope.
I don't get the need for dumbing down the game even further. It made sense in SWTOR due to the small player base and how spread out it was, causing people to have difficulties finding groups. That's not the case in ESO. It feels like ZOS thinks their customers are idiots and need to be carried through the game lest they get confused, lost and hurt themselves.
They can do the same they did to Lyris in greymoor. Eevryone else's lyris was turned into a Solitude guard when questing.

That is not for you to determine.
I am actually excited about companions, but I agree that by not allowing us to create the character, even if their story is the same, is a mistake.I would like to be able to change that. But all evidence points to them being completely static characters.
Attack of the Clones soon.
If anything, can we please rename them? Because... the Dunmer thief "Mary"?!? Next companion: the Dremora warlord "Bob"!

They're supposed to have a backstory and identity, so changing their race breaks immersion. Then again, our characters can change race (wth)
