The gaming-community and the government is working hard to make Lootboxes illegal. It may take some time, but we will get there some day.

Until then, dont give in. Dont buy Lootboxes in any game, ever.

With this logic, Bubble gum sports cards, Fantasy Game Cards, kids coin operated trinket machines should all be banned because they also would qualify as gambling, they all give you a random item but not the one you want most of the time, just like crown crates. Let us also not forget all those arcade stores where you play games for tickets and prizes, that too is gambling then, guess they need shut down as well. What a dreary world indeed we would live in.

I don't understand why people get so upset about the crown crates. On the one hand, money has to come in for the development and maintenance of the game and not everyone has ESO plus. And on the other hand, as has already been said, nobody is forced to buy the crates. You shouldn't go into it with the expectation of getting something specific, you just have to see it as fun (if you buy crates). You are either lucky or you are not. Not too bad either. Of course there will always be people who cannot control themselves, but dangers of addiction lurk everywhere.

In my opinion it is not about the morality of gambling, it is about trying to get something easier an individual wants. The gambling element is just a convenient excuse in an attempt to change the process so the items can be easier and cheaper to get.

Those are tangible items that can be sold. They have value. There is no value in a digital item that no longer exists after the game shuts down. Not a good comparison.

Ergo then there is no value in the items you want as well from crown crates, to be logically consistent your very point nullifies the whole issue of what are currently highly desirable digital items that also "will go away" when the game shuts down.

Incorrect. There is a difference between value now, and 100% losing that value when the game shuts down, because someday it will. This is an absolute.

Baseball cards can last 100+ years, and gain value, regardless of the randomness of obtaining them.

If everyone can get everything easily and cheap, then some things will probably also become less attractive. Less demand, offers drop and a source of income is lost, which is certainly necessary to keep the game going.

This is such a weird and flawed argument. Being able to resell something later on isn't the only thing that gives something "value". People buy "experiences" all the time, which is the category cash stop gaming things falls in. If it's not dumb to drop $300 on a night drinking, a fancy restaurant, a sporting event, or a concert, then it's not dumb to drop it on crown crates.

Like, I dropped a lot of money on Star Wars Galaxies before it shut down. Do I feel outraged that my money was "wasted" because I can no longer play it? No, because I enjoyed it and my purchases there for years. I get way more enjoyment, right now, for years, from my ESO crown crate/cash shop/housing/etc purchases than people do from a one time event like a concert. But for some reason one is mock worthy and one isn't.

If you take the time to read what I said, I argued the exact point you just made, but there is a clear difference between a tangible "gamble" item like a baseball card and a crown crate "gamble" item. The base ball card gives instant gratification and will NEVER lose its value. Digital items in this game will absolutely lose their value.

My point is that they are not the same which is the argument I was making to the OP who said they were the same.

Because they know people will want it. Same reason they reskin the same six mounts each time a new crate season rolls around.

Me, I've never been a big animal fan so I couldn't care any less about mounts and pets. My Achilles' Heel is costumes and emotes, so my wallet has been pretty lucky for a while.
Shortly after the formation of the Ebonheart Pact, a Nord woman was given a tour of the Tribunal Temple. When later asked about the experience, she seemed upset. Suffice to say, the Dunmer were not pleased to hear this, and thus they inquired further.
"Well," the Nord frowned, "the priests were very angry and unwelcoming. They kept shouting things at me like "you can't drink that mead in here!" and "somebody stop her, she's running naked!" and "we can't catch her; she's covered in grease!""

since the implementation of gambling crates, had it been clear that ZOS was using the profits ($93 million taken in last year) to actually improve the game in terms of performance and bug fixes that might seem acceptable to me.. otherwise countries have to step up and legislate to stop this insidious practice:
