Would a bad guild name keep you from joining?

I've seen some guilds advertising in zone chat that I would have been interested in joining, but they had really bad cringe worthy names. Would this stop you from joining, or does the name not really matter to you?

Well, assuming I ever was interested in joining a guild (I'm not) yes - a name that wasn't.... lore friendly, or was "cloaked" (something sexist, or violent), or a name that was just totally stupid.... Yep. Even if I was looking for a guild (again, I'm not) any of those would cause me to ignore invites, and if invited more than once, I'd block the person inviting.

Yes, but there's enough people out there that someone might find it hilarious or edgy.

I am the guild leader of [FUN] so I don't have to worry about that.

Never really bothered by guild names. To me a guild name is just a name.

There's a lot in a name people choose. The number of times someone is being a troll in chat and they also use an offensive name, is more often then not. Just like someone that uses a funny pun for a name also tend to have a sense of humor.

Most names I would have no problem with. There would be a handful I'd stay away from if I saw the name. Not because they are offensive really. Just because you represent your guild with your choice of name. If someone chooses to represent their guild with a name I really don't like for whatever reason, I won't bother to click any further.

Anyway, yes, I care about my guild names so I would never join a guild with a name I didn't like. Chances are they are full of people with whom I wouldn't have much in common anyway.

A guild name is how you tell people who are you are as a guildmaster and is supposed to indicate the atmosphere you're intending to cultivate with your guild.

If the guild name is offensive and in poor taste then I would avoid it because it speaks volumes of the type of people running it.

I don't agree with your cold take about "silly ninny" people in your full reply, but I'm here to say that I saw someone (a player) wearing a Death by Snu Snu tabard in Markarth just a few days ago. Maybe it got nuked on one server and not another, but I saw it and laughed hard at it.

Both guild and player names (@name included) speak volumes about the person. And yes, I would not join a guild with a messed up name (IMHO) because I probably would not fit in. We also don't invite players with messed up names into our guild, as we don't feel they would fit in with what we represent either.

No this was well over a decade ago in WoW, nice to see that episode live on.

On topic, I don't take in consideration a guild's name at all. Trade or PvP, they're just tools of access to me.

A guild name is kind of like a product's brand name or a business' name, it usually is chosen with the intent of reflecting what one is selling or of an image the owner wants to portray.

I have seen some babish guild names, inappropriate names suggesting sexual deviotness, evil satanic names , offensive racist names, guild names suggesting they want their members to belong to a very specific group of people be it religious or nationality. So yes just like in real life I do get a vibe from what a guild names is saying to me about the intention of the gm who chose it.

I don't need to love the name but it has to strike me as neutral, at least. If it's a double entendre or something lewd, that's my cringe worthy. On the other hand I'm an avid horror fan who might appreciate a macabre reference which another person could view as cringeworthy.

I sometimes see guilds advertised with the guild leaders name in the guild title.

I wouldn't join a guild like that ... tells me all I need to know about the guild leader.

I think the name should reflect the type of guild you're making, but it doesn't have to be exact. For example I wouldn't expect all PvP guilds to reference their alliance or PvP in their name, but I'd find it weird if one was called something like 'The Explorers Society'.

Same with joke vs serious names, both are fine but it should reflect the intended tone of the guild. If you want people to take you and the game seriously then a joke name is going to create the wrong impression, but equally if you want a laid back fun guild for casual play and joking around in chat a very serious lore-friendly name would probably attract the wrong kind of people.

Since I mainly look for laid back, casual guilds to give me people to chat to and people to play with who aren't that concerned about doing things exactly 'right' or as fast as possible a silly name can be a good sign for me, although I tend to stay away from innuendo or 'edgy' comedy. One of my current guilds is called 'Cadwell Made Me Do It' and the name, along with their recruitment message definitely helped say 'these are your kind of people'

There's a lot that can be gleaned from people's personalities and intentions by looking at the name they choose for a group.

I would not care for giving a guild a try unless it made a reasonably good first impression on me. The name is part of that.

Sometime you can get away with an ironic name, one favorite example of mine being a marketing consultant company named "Pony Slaughter and Processing, Inc." (paraphrased, the original name is not in English). However, the fine line between irony and insult is blurred in text-based online communication, and such names for guilds, FB groups, blogs, whatever, generally don't go over well. Literal minded people who are easily offended tend to cause more trouble than what it's worth.

I usually pick guilds that have traders and reasonable terms. The guilds name is most often unimportant unless it's really uninviting.

totally this, if i see the stupid names i ignore them, it shows the character of the gm and his followers... don´t support, ignore and ban trolls everywhere you see and make the community better! :)

I wouldn't join if it had an apostrophe in the wrong place, eg Prince's and Princess's. I've seen a guild with possibly that name or something similar. Yes, I am that Grammar... uh... person.

I agree. I also don't join guilds that refer to places, nations or religions that don't exist in TES but are from other franchises. The question is just: Why should I, if there are enough alternatives where people seem to know that this is Nirn and not Middle-earth, Aventuria or Oerth? That said, everyone has to choose for themselves, I'm sure that many people don't mind at all.

I don't really care about guild names, if it a serious or a troll name, if it based on the guild activities or not, if it describes personalities or it is a funny sentence.

The only thing I don't really like if a guild name has references to real life like some television show or to other games.

No because I'm not a silly ninny who gets outraged when they see a something or a word they dislike.

It has nothing to do with being outraged. I wouldn't join any guild with a ridiculous or childish sounding name because I couldn't take them serious. And like @Kiralyn2000 said, anyone who made or joined a guild with a name like that most likely wouldn't be anyone I'd want to hang out with.

People make the guild and the guild name. If it's not something outright stupid or reference to something I'm incompatible with, name does not matter.
