Random BG's and playing the objective.

I think the community has decided, if they cannot play in a dedicated deathmatch playlist, than they just make every match Deathmatch. No matter what game mode it is.

It seems the decision to try to force these less popular game modes on people has backfired. You can't even play the objective if you wanted to, everyone just plays like it's deathmatch. I feel bad for the people who legitimately enjoyed objective based BG's. They can't even play a proper game of it. All Random BG's have done is ruin their experience.

I'm not sure what the solution is, but as it stands right now. Every match is Deathmatch and screw the objective. (Unless I'm just an outlier)

What are everyone else's take on this? Has anyone else noticed it too?

If you like objectives you can still que the solo que. As far as I know people still play objectives there.

But the group que is Deathmatch only (sometimes with a ball, flags or a relic yet still a Deathmatch)
Which makes it kind of hard to analyse who won. Alot of times 2 teams play Deathmatch and the third team can peacefully play objectives until they win.

Yes. I think the main issue comes down to the nature of these modes. Alot of these objective modes don't encourage fighting or PvP. These modes aren't really that popular. Domination and capture the relic are the two worst. Chaos ball, and Crazy King aren't nearly as bad.

Alot of people go into these battlegrounds expecting to PvP and sometimes you get paired with people that have no intention of fighting. They will run arround, sneak, come in with overly tanky builds and do whatever they can to avoid fighting. It can be really frustrating ending up with these people on their teams. Especially if you end up facing people with high MR.

I think seperating ques by game mode would help with this.

Fragmenting the queue more will increase the queue times by a lot, @SgtNuttzmeg.

It's not an option ... unless we go back to solo queue only with mode choice (which players were vocally opposed to).

I have to disagree. The only modes that will be affected will be the objective based modes. It's clear that the majority of the community does not like them. Deathmatch will always be fine to queue for. Even when we had solo queues, objective based game modes were still underpopulated.

The very least they can do is increase the chance to get deathmatch there are 3 modes yet the chance to get deathmatch is 1/5. Why would they programm it like that. Who would even think that 1/5 is the perfect chance to get into one of 3 game modes

    I have noticed the same.

Something I don't understand is not getting points for defending. My GF will often guard our flag while the other 2 from the team run the ball/flag. But we get little to no points for this.

Is there an official list of how points are calculated for BG's?

You only get points in landgrab for actively taking or defending flags from others.

Relicrun for capturing, taking relics from other players and healing

Chaosball for healing, damaging the carrier and carrying the ball

Deathmatch for (double tripple) Kills, assists, healing

    Regarding the topic:
The two most problematic game modes in BG's are capture the relic and domination which essentially rewards the player for avoiding the other teams, and imo, regardless of the game mode being objective based or not, you shouldn't be able to win a game by avoiding other teams as much as possible.

Chaos ball, crazy king and deathmatch are fine since you have to go against the other teams in order to win the game but domination can be won by just running away from every single fight. Thats just awful design. And capture the relic is just a competition of who can abuse the immovable potion bug the best (it prevents you from getting interrupted when taking the relic, which obviously isn't indended) which makes the entire mode pointless.

Both domination and capture the relic needs to be reworked to reward engaging the enemy teams and not camping your relic/flag or avoiding fights.

Exactly. Why have a PvP queue in mini game and not have it focus on PvP. These modes also don't translate very well to higher MMR matches where people stick together, you need a healer and people actually fight. You can't divide and to protect multiple objectives because if you do you will get overwhelmed and killed. You need a full team that knows what they are doing and are running sweaty builds.

Honestly, deathmatch is the only mode I dislike. Some players just seem invincible for some reason. I do love objective based BG's. As those are more about clever tactics than overpowered builds. This is probably why PvPers do not like those modes, while I think they are perfect. Especially when you are drawn in a 1-vs-1 or 1-vs-2 situation in those BG's... thats freaking awesome.

But ALL BG's are no fun when MMR kicks in. Remove MMR and make players fully random please. MMR is really unfair if you happen to enjoy BG's and win a couple of times in a row. It then queue's you against every full PvP player/team. Which really destroys the fun if you are not into PvP but like to do the occasional match as a solo player.

The last three days I ran two BG's per day. Happened to win both BG's the first two days, and now today I kept getting placed against teams I do not even stand a chance against. Today took me three tries to just get the daily random experience from a BG. This to me sucks the fun out of it, so make it truly random and drop MMR. The MMR system is fully stacked against non-PvPers who enjoy the occasional PvP.

PS: This post is made by a non-PvPer, who does sometimes like to PvP.

    I respectfully disagree, @SgtNuttzmeg.

Just because a mode has less direct fighting doesn’t mean you’re not risking PvP.

If players ignored these other modes, then they would get too comfortable with their deathmatch builds and not have to diversify their tactics.

Given the choice between solo/group queue and game mode option, players were very vocal about having solo/group queue.

So, here we are with that arrangement today.

    Agreed 100%

I don't objective based gameplay but the way it is done in some of the Battlegrounds, you dont often get to PVP. I was in a match the other day with my GF. The winning team had a couple deaths, no kills and they won by a landslide because all they did was run in a circle to objectives.

As far as your MMR comment, I 10000% agree. Pugs should NEVER face against full premades. The only people who like pugs facing premades are premades who want to roll pugs. This of course is a bit of an issue in ESO because the team size is so small and because 2-3 friends might want to queue together which makes them a premade. If the game had larger group sizes, maybe 7v7v7 we would see less roflstomping by premades.

So you really think Deathmatch doesent require any tactics? Before the proc meta, when people were killed by coordinated ultimates, deathmatches were super tactical. You had to constantly watch your own and your team's positioning. If you got caught between the other 2 teams that was a big mistake on your side. And you always tried to engage other teams once they ulti dumped each other.

The clever tactic of objective based BGs literally only requires you to run/cloak aways from every single fight. Wow much smart many clever!

I know several people who will instantly leave a game if it's Capture the Relic or Domination due to how poorly the game modes are designed. In my opinion the modes needs rework. My suggestions:

    Domination:
The core mechanic of the game mode is still the same but you no longer get as many points for simply holding more flags. Instead you're rewarded more points for killing enemy players on flags (both defensive and offensiv executions). So less points for simply holding flags and avoid the enemy teams, and more points for engaging in combat.

    Capture the Relic:
Here there are several ways to fix this mode, and most of them has to do with bug fixes tbh. My main suggestion is to remove each teams individual relic and have the game mode spawn a relic in the middle of the map that your team has to bring back to your base. While carrying the relic you can't benefit drom expedition or other movement speed bonuses, but you can sprint. This change forces you to engage in combat with the other teams instead of sitting at your own flat guarding/camping the relic.

And this has nothing to do with hating on objective based game modes, because I uses to enjoy them a few patches ago. But when a team can win a game by not engaging into PvP (and PvPin my book means you fight other players, not avoiding them) in a battleground, something is wrong and needs to be changed.

And battlegrounds desperately needs a propper AND VISABLE ranking system (with appropriate rewards). This is the main issue that prevents battlegrounds to actually be really good content.

Deathmatch only requires one tactic: Stay together and buff up group buffs. This makes players practically impossible to be killed, and makes it only about who has the most groupbuffs in their team.

Suggestions as shown in this thread, to make non-deathmatch matches more about PvP. Those suggestions would totally destroy PvP for those who like to occasionally PvP, and for those who know they can't match up to actual PvP players. Losing is fine, but going in knowing you don't stand a chance at all... that would chase almost every non-PvPer away from PvP.

I think the way BG-objectives are at the moment is perfect. Although I do feel some arena's are way too big, but that is not really a BG-objectives issue.

PS: For the record I do not get the 'only kills matter'-mindset at all, where it seems fun to only kill players. Especially with differing skilllevels between players, this makes some players just killfodder.

Tbh, I’ve played BGs since their inception. And through all the change, CP, no CP, group, no group. Separate modes and only random.

I can’t speak for what the community has decided. But vast majority of people queing for BGs only play “mindless slaughter” mode. Looong before. When you could queue for flag games, “slaughter savvy” people would que for them for easier hacking down people who went in with lesser, speedy sets for that mode particularly.

The only time I’ve seen people have this mindset of trying to do something else it’s very very few and because they are trying to do some sort of achievement.

So no matter how it was, how it is or how it may change in the future, always expect people to not care what the mode is and just slaughter because that’s just I guess what people really want in BGs. Personally, I only do it for AP because it’s easy gain. Not really enjoyable and once I reach my grand overlord I probably won’t ever oven queue for one 🤷‍♂️

I speak for Xbox platform. And it appears population there is about 300 people (based on leaderboards) and the rest of the people would be 2-4 BGs a week considering most of the time the 100-th person on there only has about 10k points. So that means way less than 1% of player base on Xbox NA actually plays BGs.

I’d say aside of AP gaining there really is no reason. Mindless slaughter is only liked by so many 🤷‍♂️

It´s not the "only kills matter perspective" point people are trying to make, it´s the fact that certain game modes like Domination and Capture the Relic (especially domination) can be won without even engaging with the enemy teams. You´re essentially avoiding PvP in a PvP mode, which is just horrible design. If you´re just going to run between point A and B you (not you specifically just generally speaking) might aswell stick to PvE overland questiong where you do the same thing.

In modes like Crazy King, which is a mix of deathmatch and domination, you don´t get these problems because you can´t win the mode by simply avoiding the enemy teams.

And deathmatches in a 4v4v4 premade takes more effort than you would imagine, especially if you´re up against good teams. Positioning and avoiding to get stuck between the enemy teams, while trying to sandwich the enemy is quite hectic and one too many wrong decisions of poor positioning will cost your team a potential win.

And the difference in skill level is most likely a result of ZOS never implementing a propper ranking/mmr system that puts you up against equally skilled opponents.

In Domination, if everyone is indeed running from point A to point B, wouldn't two teams then engage each other at Point B and fight it out?

In Capture the Relic, I don't see how you can avoid fighting if all three relics are being held simultaneously by an enemy team as that will result in a stalemate.

    ?

That's the problem. You shouldn't be able to win a PvP mode by avoiding the enemy teams. It's bad design and needs a change.
In Capture the Relic, I don't see how you can avoid fighting if all three relics are being held simultaneously by an enemy team as that will result in a stalemate

The problems with capture the relic are:
    * You can easily win any given relic game by having 1 or 2 players sitting in sneak/stealth and wait for a team to go away. Then have two full blown tanks sit at your own relic and hug it 24/7. Only way an enemy team will kill them is by going 3-4 people. At some point an enemy team will get bored and just go for a relic or people in their team will leave due to boredom (and trust me, majority of people leaving BG's are in capture the relic). And just like that you never have to fight anyone.

    * In certain map you can attack from your spawn point and protect the relic that way snd the players down below can't do anything about it. That needs a rework so you can't attack from your spawn. And this goes for all modes. S

    * The relic needs to be further away from a teams spawn point in order to make it harder for the guy sitting 24/7 guarding the relic.

    * Another thing that completely ruins capture the relic are all the players who abuse the immovable potion bug that makes it impossible to bash them while picking up the relic.

I'd prever there being only 1 relic that all 3 teams have to fight about and bring back to their base. I understand that the people defending domination and capture the relic are players who don't enjoy or play much pvp, but it's not PvP when game modes rewards you for not fighting or engaging other players.

We can all agree that Deathmatch is the most popular game mode i guess.

Chaosball is also kinda fine cause fighting is around the ball. But crazy king and domination is won by running away from fights and capture Flags. Capture the relic kinda the same and forces one to stay on relic and protect it.

And why put a leaderboard? When i cant even decide the gamemode? I cant get higher in Deathmatch leaderboard when i never get it in my rotation. Genius!

Maybe among pure PvPers, but not to everyone else. Anyone else includes: PvE'ers, less skilled players, older players, more tactical players, players new to PvP, etc.

Strangely, getting killfarmed is not appealing to some of us.

Capture the Relic (or formerly known in other games as CTF) is the most traditional objective-based mode. However it was designed for 2 teams fighting for the opposite flag and avoiding fighting was not an option unless you wanted to lose. However addition of third team conpletely messed up the basic concept of CTF and avoiding fighting is not only an option but a very desired one.

The same applies to domination. The mode is a very basic one and works quite well for 2 teams fighting each other. Third team ruins the concept.

Concept of three teams causes many problems also in the beloved Deathmatch.

I strongly feel that the problem since begining is the design of three teams fighting each other for the objectives. It's a bad design and Zenimax was warned when they came with it up. This is what you get when you stubbornly want to come with something different from traditional concepts even if it's a non-sense. That's also a reason why ESO BGs will never become a respected e-sport even if Zenimax was able to fix the bugs, rework the leaderboard and balance classes and skill lines out.

I never played BG's or no CP PvP pre greymoor, but since the lag in grey host is getting worse over time and we had the AoE tests I've been running BG's for a couple of hours every Saturday.

In all these games we've had a stunning amount of deathmatches (two!!!!), while getting a lot of domination games. There is no fun in winning such a game by running from flag to flag with 0 kills and 0 deaths. Best is when all three teams realize that and meet up somewhere on the map, but there is a big change one team will just end the game in five minutes.

Though I must say that I like crazy king, it forces combat at certain locations but isn't one big target fest like chaosball. Deathmatch still remains the most tactical game mode because dying gives points to your opponents, and seeing how almost everyone complains about the lack of deathmatch games ZOS should definitely change of getting one.

Can you stop calling "avoiding every Player versus players" "tactical" your essential framing/bashing the entire player Vs player community

I can imagine that when you don't communicate tactics (setups, roles, leader, targets, movement, pressure, burst, ultimates, getting focused etc.) about moving objectives that deal damage (=deathmatch), that domination might appear to be more tactical because all your (static) objectives are spread out.
