After seeing a lot of negativity on these forums about the game and feeling they do not reflect my experience thus far, I thought I should share my thoughts. ESO has given me a lot of fun over the past few weeks and I'm only up to Coldharbour.

This is despite the fairly cliche storyline, hit-and-miss questlines, bugs and player/bot issues. This game is far from perfect.

What it offers however is an excellent crafting system that has allowed me to essentially design my own outfit for my toon using the various racial styles. It is also the first time I have been able to enjoy the Elder Scrolls world with a friend, and though there are phasing issues there, if you dedicate to only questing with the other person, it isn't really an issue. There is plenty of PvP to be had while they're away.

I find the freedom to be the kind of character I want to be very appealing and the class skills available suit many different play styles. Perhaps this is just the sorcerer, but the spread of class skills complements both ranged and melee well. It is unfortunate that the pets are a little underwhelming, but it is just another thing to look forward to improvements on.

The game also provides a lot of freedom to do what you want to do (once you're level 10). If you want to PvP go for it. You'll likely suck at 1v1 combat until you're VR, but there's plenty of scouting, besieging, defending, exploring and questing to be had. Just expect to get killed more often. You can also basically ignore questing for a large chunk of the game and just craft/hunt/explore in a zone until you level enough to graduate to safely hunt in the next zone. I don't know if anyone would really do this (as you'd be missing out on a lot of content), but the option is there (up until Coldharbour).

Comparing ESO to WoW (because it's WoW), last time I played (which is probably a few years ago now) you could do PvP, but only a certain kind of PvP at low levels, and if you wanted XP you better go quest. You can craft, but only in a set style and you won't be able to craft everything so you'll need to have a friend/alt give you mats or buy things from the AH to do that properly. You can chose from multiple classes, but if you chose a caster you are restricted in what armor and weapons you can use. In the end, your toon is essentially the same as everyone else's because the best armor for your class/role/level will look the same.

That to me is what makes ESO great. I am playing MY character. He is unique to my playstyle, tastes and quirks and I get to share that with my friends. The Elder Scrolls games have been good, but I have always felt lonely adventuring in them. One man against the world (maybe with an NPC companion). Now I can finally share the excitement of finding treasure, defeating a rare beast or discovering an interesting locale.

I look forward to what this game will offer in the coming months.

TL:DR
I like the freedom of expression and playstyle ESO has to offer. It is unlike anything I have ever played.

Excellent post Tadhg ... couldn't agree more. There's so much potential, and that makes it easy for me to overlook the current shortcomings.

Have to echo your sentiment about getting past that the one man against the world feeling. Even back in the days or Morrowind ... I think I was playing Asheron's Call back then ... I was craving an ES MMO experience to combine what I loved from both ... finally!

Nice post! People need to slow down and not worry about hitting level 50 so badly. So much lore to read and scenery to take in.

Wholeheartedly agree with your views on this game. I've played many an MMO but never has the realm or lore captured my attention like ESO has.

I've been trying for nigh on a year to introduce my friends/family to the Elder Scrolls franchise, but being a single player experience prior to the release of ESO, they weren't interested. So to be able to introduce not one but four other people to the lore rich world that is Tamriel, well... simply put, it's amazing that I can finally share that experience with people I care about.

Bumbling around exploring the world has been something of an enjoyable experience on my own, but with friends... it's like an adventure.

ESO somehow reminds me alot of City of Heroes (R.I.P.)
its a favorable comparison IMO, certainly the character (class) diversity is similar even if the action bars are not.

To me, ESO feels a lot like EverQuest did 10+ years ago: a huge world, vast lands to explore, people to meet, quest opportunities everywhere you look, and PvP is nicely walled off so it doesn't ruin the real game for the rest of us. I hope the developers preserve the (comparatively) slow leveling. Maybe even slow it down more? Slow leveling means it takes longer to reach the end game, which means people pay for their subscriptions longer. And it drives the WoWheads mad. What's not to like?

the problem (or not problem) is that people that like the game are too busy playing it :)

New MMO, wait for the freemonthers to go troll a new game.

I would feel sorry for Wildstar, if I didn't think it was rubbish...

Thanks everyone for such a positive response. I was half expecting to have to fend off a pack of trolls picking it apart. I don't feel like I have anything further to add, but I felt I should do more than just keep tapping the 'agree' button on every post.

Glad to see I'm not alone in my appreciation of what is right with ESO.

Nah , it is , good, but nothing i would right home about , my friends ask me if they should buy ... could not recomend at all , even more since it is pretty much a single player game where i get to see other people running around.

But i enjoyed SWTOR and GW2 much more , while true i did have a better time in this game than some other MMO.

Being a SW fan , SWTOR was totally great to play , but eventually i finished the story on many chars and i did not enjoy the end game much.

GW2 is just great overall to me , still play from time to time.

With that said, i do like the story of this game , quite sure i will play till i get to vet10 and thus have finished the whole thing.

It definitely needs some polish. But, I have had very little trouble playing coop with a friend through the majority of the quests. The main exceptions are the guild and harborage quests which game me something else to do while my coop partner was away. It just doesn't allow for the kind of drop in coop that people have become accustomed to, due to the phasing. As I said in my first post, as long as you choose to only quest when your questing partner/group is around then it works quite well. It isn't ideal sure, but far from forcing people to quest solo.

I respect that people can't recommend it to friends in it's current form. Most games I play from day one I wouldn't recommend in the first month either.

Well , the thing that makes playing this game worthy it for me , is the story and the lore of each race (since i have been playing ES games since Morrowind , but this one is clearly the one with the biggest amount of variety).

Im finishing the AD zone now , lvl 45 , and i can say i learned a lot about the 3 races and i was able to also enjoy the story quite a bit. (While true there were parts i did not like or that i wish i could tell my char to pick another outcome).
