I don't join random guilds any longer.

Not all are tentacles or part of a conspirancy. Three of us were officers in a larger trading guild and left (for reasons not assosciated in any way with our current guild). We made a small social guild, first rule fun...we wanted to enjoy the game again.
Some people from the old guild joined us later and we recruited new players to the game, vets who just wanted a place to chill, etc.. We wanted to offer a place where everyone felt valued and welcome. Some months later we are over 250 members ( a lot of members bringing friends of theirs into the fold and some recruiting). We now offer learning trial runs, dungeons both vet and learning, pvp night with our "Paws" team, we have a yard sale, auction and raffle by member request, do random free giveaways. One of the officers loves to help people with dps and gear, another loves to help people learn to make gold, others like to run fun events, and some event/competitions with valuable prizes. We always wanted to offer a "full service" guild to those left out of all the others and we are doing it!
We asked our members if they would like a small trader somewhere, not a promise weekly, but one that the guild as a whole could afford WHEN we could afford it. No mins, no dues, nothing required except a positive helpful atttitude toward other members of the family.
So, it may be rare, but there are people out there who aren't part of the conspiracy, who aren't elistist or power hungry and are honest people who just want to have fun and help others do the same.

No, let me explain.
Aliens.
Every suspicion and moment of paranoia you've ever experienced is justified, and those behind it all are aliens.
Shapeshifting, blood drinking, Reptilian, aliens!
You think the way they manipulate MMO economies is the extent of their influence? You don't know the half of it!

Now people might branch off from a full major trading guild to start a new chapter as it were and so I could see them having the financial backing to get a trader right off — probably a calculated loss because having a good trader is a reason for people to join the guild but it seems like it would be unlikely to pay for itself early on.

Trader bids are indeed expensive as heck. Some locations aren't though and can easily be won by less than a million. I'm part of two large trading guilds where I make the most of my money flipping things, even going as far as to buy cheaper things from my own guild members on our store and listing them in one of the big places to make a 10% profit or so. This combined with 18 writ characters leads me to making a few million gold per week and if need be this is enough to dump on a trader bid and win. More often than not, other officers help me and other people from the guild chip in which means that we get to spend some serious gold on better places and can have a high selling week now and then. Anyone looking at our roster would wonder how we pay for it, but all it takes it a few generous members. If I weren't buying anything else though I could definitely pay for it myself every week.
A social guild I am in has managed to get a trader the past two weeks. The first week I'm guessing our inventory was a bit lacking as I had close to 60% of the total sales for the week. This 2nd week looks like overall we are going to sell a lot more. Part of the reason behind the social guild not having a great inventory is their members interested in trading are in a trade guild. Their higher end items tend to go to that guild. The social guilds get the mid to low worth items and even then it takes a couple of weeks before players think it worth the effort to put those items in.
