"show on map" doesn't always show the quest destination

When I highlight a quest and choose "show on map" I often get shown the nearest caravan or boat or other such object that takes me to the zone the quest is in. But "show on map" should show the actual quest location, not how to get out of the zone you are in. And if you follow their path you can end up in a perpetual run around through multiple zones before reaching your destination, if ever. Please fix this.

I think it’s a matter of the quest needing to be in the zone your in at the time. If you happen to be in a delve they are technically a different zone.

Essentially, I don’t think it’ll change to a different map.

If the quest is already in the zone I'm in, I can usually see it's marker just by looking at the map. But when I am in one zone, not in a delve or any other indoor place, "show on map" shouldn't show me a caravan in a completely different zone, but it often does.

2nd this. It makes the feature useless half of the time. And since it's always blatantly easy and always the same to get from one zone to another, there's no need to point to an effing wayshrine. I mean, come on.

Agreed. It should definitely show you where exactly it's located.

Also extra painful in Western Skyrim & The Reach, ‘cause if you are in an instance (ie. one of MANY areas with a load-screen) - you can’t see markers on any of the various map zoom levels.

I was not arguing. Just stating how I think it works.

This behavior actually took me through just about every Daggerfall Convenant zone back in my early days of playing ESO, and all I wanted to do was turn in my crafting writs. It was kind of awesome as far as getting me off of Vvardenfell and blowing my mind with how big the game world is and how different the zones can be from each other. But it was also frustrating.

Tonight after I completed Tempest Island and happened to use the "show on map" feature on my Undaunted pledge, it showed the destination as Elden Root in Grahtwood, even though my main belongs to the Daggerfall Covenant and I was expecting it to show me Wayrest in Stormhaven. So it seems like it might have something to do with the zone you're in, since I happened to be in Malabal Tor in the Aldmeri Dominion, and it was showing my destination as Grahtwood in the Aldmeri Dominion.

You are correct. I am in Bangkorai with an active quest for Skywatch in Auridon. I selected the "Show Me" and it brought up the Skywatch map. I right-clicked and it showed me Auridon.

So it seems it does work as OP is suggesting they want it to work. There might be some quests that do not do this well for one reason or another but it does seem rank and file quests handle it.

sometimes in is a case of on the map segment you are on ( ie if you are in town it only shows as the exit)
somethimes it just does not show up at all ( but reopening the map it suddenly does)

No, it doesn't. The "show on map" feature should show where the quest takes place on the map, regardless of where you are when you choose the feature.

You edited out where I stated I was in Bangkorai with an active quest that was in Auridon. When I selected for it to show me where the quest was located, it did. It showed me the quest icon in Skywatch which is in Auridon. I am merely confirming @SeaGtGruff statement is accurate.

In that, I am certainly willing to acknowledge that does not mean it is the case with every quest as there may be some located in areas where the design gets confused. However, it does seem they are one-offs due to location as @Gythral notes in their post.

Personally, I think the easier solution is for each quest to note what zone it is located in.

It's even so bad that when you are in a city in the zone of a quest you won't see the quest marker until you either port out of the city in zone, or just walk out of it. For example if you are in Solitude you can't see where the quests in Western Skyrim overland are. I guess Solitude is it's own zone. It's super annoying imo.

The only exception is if the quest is in Blackreach, because the quest marker shows up at the gate to exit Solitude, but if you click on the icon to switch to the Blackheart map then it shows you the quest location there. But that doesn't help with any of the overland quests, as you say.

If the quest is in another zone, you can usually see its location marked on the map if you switch to the map of the appropriate zone, but that doesn't work if you're already in the appropriate zone but are in a city that has its own map.

You can't switch to the map of the appropriate zone if you don't know which zone that is. That is the main reason I ever use this feature.

That's been my experience too. If I access the map from the quest journal then it will show the quest marker in the right place in the zone it's in, and if a delve or city etc then one click switches it to the zone map if required. If the quest has several zone locations (e.g. it you need to visit multiple NPCs in different locations) then it will show the first one until that has stage has been completed and then it will show the next one.

I can certainly see that there might be the occasional quest or zone that doesn't work that way, but if it's a more general problem then I can't help wondering if it's related to a particular add-on?

This has not been my experience. I always go to the quest journal, right click the quest and choose "show on map". And I often get sent to caravans, boats, town exits and/or wayshrines instead of the place where the quest actually is. I've had to google and find locations this way, which I shouldn't have to if this feature did what it's name implied and actually showed on map.

This bothers me as well. For example if I'm in Solitude or Markarth the quest marker points to the door out of the city. I have to travel outside the city for it to show the location. Would definitely be nice it it would show the actual location no matter where you are and let is figure out how to get there.

And if there are specific situations where this occurs then they need to be mentioned. Zos needs specifics and not generalizations when it comes to suggestions and issues with how things work.

I was actually noting that @Idinuse had given a good example. I guess I was not clear about that. I may have missed one but I think it was the first post that did a decent job explaining a situation where this did not work as expected.

Since we do know that we can be in a different zone and it will go to the correct Zone much of the time it is important to note the specific situations where it does not work correctly as Idinuse did. Otherwise, Zos can test it and see it works fine unless they happen upon one of those specific situations.
