Is it EVER ok for officers to ask guildies to donate real money ingame?

I joined a trading guild where one of the officers linked a go fund me page to the guilds discord, asking guildies to donate to another guild member. There was a link to a go fund me page. The page asked to help this guild member but gave no reason as to why they needed the money. Apparantly it was a private reason. They wanted 1 thousand dollars.

The officers in that guild were all shady aswell as the guild master and im thinking that they all work as a team to scam people. When i quit...one of them whispered me asking for gold from me. I blocked them

Yes i quit the guild and put the other dudeon ignore but I wonder how many people donate real money to them out of kindness not realusing they are being scammed.

I'd like to elaborate, of course, *** can happen and you need the help of your friends, but FRIENDS, not strangers, who might even be in the exact same situation and put on the spot.

No clear explanation as to such a massive amount of money would be spent on.

I'd run fast if after "Welcome to the guild!" came "...Now pay up!" :D If my *known* friends asked, Its another thing entirely...

No one can force anyone to donate whether or not it's in-game gold or real money. Asking for donation for something without any sort of explanation, presentation, evidence or whatsoever is clearly a scam. In fact, it's a serious issue exploiting people's kindness, good will which you should report to Zos, of course if you have screenshots to prove it.
Those people who donate blindly are fools too, but who am I to judge.

I am fine with donating stuff bought for crowns bought for real money to furnish a guild hall.
Donating actual money outside of the game for an undisclosed reason? Heck no. Run.

I mean, they can ask, and they have no way of coercing people to pay. But it does sound dodgy at best, and might mislead some guild members.

If they frame it in a way to leave no doubt that it's voluntary and doesn't have anything to do with the guild, eh, sure (e.g., "hey all, one of our guildies has run into a rough patch; there's no obligation to donate, but if folks would like to help out, here's more info"). Also depends on the general culture of the guild, though. It could definitely come across as faux pas.

With what you've described, though, that's just lame.

Well.. let's put it this way. They are not "real" officers; like in real life. So, they should not be entitled to ask for "real" money. They are just in-game role-playing officers. So, they are entitled to ask for in-game role-playing money.

Eh. If they aren't trying to coerce people and just asking, then that's their business. You can report them to ZOS, but if they aren't asking for money in exchange for anything then I'm not sure that it's actually against TOS. I don't know about GoFundMe's policy, but if again, if they aren't asking for anything in exchange or misleading anyone, might not be much you can do except what you have already done. Which is to wisely not give them money and block them.

Just report them and let zos and gofundme figure it out

Hard No. I say this as an officer in three Guilds, and a "Second in Command" in one of them. Heck, we don't even have in-game gold dues. That is a big ol' Red Flag and a scam.

Good rule of.thumb, never give money to someone you don't know in real life, if they ask you for it.

Volunteering a donation on your own, like donating for disaster relief or charity, please do so. Just make sure it is either a legit charity or need.
Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

Apparently yes. For me it was $45,000ish when I had Cancer. Could be more, we didn't add up the final bills.

In theory I don't think there's anything wrong with asking. People in the same guild can get to be very close, so it could be appropriate to ask for real money donations, either for something in-game (like giving the leader money to buy crown store stuff for a guild hall) or even for real life issues.

But there's a huge difference between asking and pressuring people to pay up (or requiring it as part of guild membership) and it's never ok to pressure them. Even if you're certain they can afford it you have no right to dictate how they spend their money.

Also I don't think it's ever a good idea to give money to someone who is unwilling to say what it's for. If they're prepared to ask they should be prepared to say why, otherwise it looks dodgy as hell.

    This.

Since they are not trading anything or making the donation a requirement there is nothing for Zos to look at. However, it makes no sense to donate to anything the reason is not clear. Common sense should prevail here.

If they made donations a requirement to be in the guild, participate in something, or to gain something in-game then it would be a violation of the TOS.

yeah, under no circumstances is that ever okay. and for how lax ZOS is on a lot of things, they really don't like any real-money transactions using their game (unless the real-money transactions are towards them of course. But that's reasonable, a different can of worms entirely, and not relevant to the topic at hand so I digress).

I'd have kindly told them to fug off, and would have promptly named and shamed them in zone chat. no in-game group is worth me spending real money just to join them, and scammers always deserve to be called out.
Shortly after the formation of the Ebonheart Pact, a Nord woman was given a tour of the Tribunal Temple. When later asked about the experience, she seemed upset. Suffice to say, the Dunmer were not pleased to hear this, and thus they inquired further.
"Well," the Nord frowned, "the priests were very angry and unwelcoming. They kept shouting things at me like "you can't drink that mead in here!" and "somebody stop her, she's running naked!" and "we can't catch her; she's covered in grease!""
