So do any other of you altoholics have a "Main" character you play but it's not your favorite??

I'm an admitted altoholic in MMO's. I just enjoy playing a variety of different characters. Recently though, I came to the realization that the original toon I created when ESO launched is really not my favorite one to play lol. I run him through all the content, chapters, & DLC's. Yes, I've considered switching my "main" to another character but it just doesn't sit right with me lol. Am I the only Tamrielian who feels this way??

Eh, hmmm. I retired my original main when I discovered she was a huge problem for me to play (stamblade) with my satellite mega ping. I decided on wardens for both accounts - because with the pet it's less of an issue with my ping trying to kill something.

Then after I got better at the game, and got a better satellite provider (my ping's still high but not quite as bad as before), I unretired her and worked on getting her to 50, which happened with the last double XP event whatever it was - but I have no intention of going away from my wardens as mains.

    I have a LOT of characters; I'm a mega-altoholic.

My main is a dragonknight as it has the majority of my achievements as well as motif and recipe knowledge. I'd rather play my templar or nightblade. I'd love to switch my main (either with a class change or account wide motif/recipe/achievements) but that isn't an option at the moment.

due to all the different patch/game changes - my two "mains" on each server (magblade and maglar) have changed a lot over the years...

they definitely aren't as "fun" to play as they once were...

Yes! My first character (Dragonknight) is still at level 17. My second character is my main which is at 444 cp right now (Stamblade). Third character is my Tank 444 cp, but it's not my favorite, because tanking is boring and repetitive a lot of times, but it's a necessary utility.

I had a main once, a dk, with whom I leveled to over 200cp some years back. Thankfully, after some experimentation fairly early on at lvl 300-400, I realized my favourite character was going to be my Templar. I main him to this day now at cp1360; and while he is my achievement character and still my favourite despite some rough nerfs, I do have a variety of other characters I play regularly. His crown hasn't been taken yet though, lol.

I switch my "main toon" all the time. I also have a bunch of alts and when I get bored or frustrated at one, I play around and experiment with another for a while. It keep the game fresh, although at this point I have numerous "mains", one for crafting/farming/fun, one for DPS stuff, one for PVP stuff and 8 more siting in the wings.

Oh yeah, and my first character from launch, was my last to hit level 50 and just recently got there. :)

My main is a stamblade. First char i created back in 2016. She is a Grand Overlord, Master Crafter, Flawless vMA. Yeah you get the point. She got most of it. I still consider her my main even though i havent played her much the last 2 years. She mostly do writs and supply my alts with foods, drinks, potions and gear. I do an occasional pledge run or some PvP, thats it. I Enjoy playing my alts more theese days though.

I've had the same experience. My "main" is my sorc - first character, really good to learn on and has the research unlocked, the crafting lines levelled and the skill points to use them. I decided a while back though to retire him and don't really play him much now, though I'm on him everyday for crafting and trading. While he's probably my "strongest" toon, pets aren't done well in ESO and when half your bar is a dot that follows you around the gameplay is a bit meh compared to other classes. That said, I'm thinking of getting greymoor, in which case I'd probably do the antiquities thing on him.

Yes, I have a argoniam magplar (healer) that I use as my main toon for quests, scrying, explorations achievements (every content that is not tryhard). Then I realized it would be better if I used my magblade as my main and use cloack to avoid pointless fights during quests.

My main, a magblade I created at launch in 2014, is still my favorite character to play, although she is no longer built for going into vet trials or even some of the harder vet DLC dungeons. She started out as a stamblade, morphed into a heal/dps mag/stam hybrid with a resto staff, leeching skills and a bow backbar (this was definitely a viable build in 2015, and it was an absolute joy to play). Now she is a somewhat low damage but very survivable magblade who can function as a leeching magtank and/or healer in easier content (up to and including vet non-DLC dungeons), and deal at least half decent DPS if required. It's a great build for solo play as well, and it's still my favorite character for questing. She has done pretty much everything the game has to offer, except for the DB questline and climbing to higher ranks in PvP, simply because I don't like those two parts of the game.

My only "endgame build" is a Templar healer, but with the recent recurring and serious problems with the game, I haven't been doing vet trials for quite a while, and she is a bit too specialized both in build and gear to be of good use in easier content where strong heals are not required. Other than that, I have a multi-purpose Sorcerer and a Templar tank, both built for fun and convenience rather than for performance. I take them for a dungeon run now and then, but they really don't get out a lot.

I don't really have a main. I have my crafter who I'm on the most, and at this point she's probably run more general content then any of my individual other characters. But I don't run her through things just for the sake of giving her first go at it or for achievements, it's always just a means to an end, unlocking various things. She's also explored more of the map than any other character as she has nearly every skyshard. She has a fun solo build which developed organically over time since I originally didn't intend to give her a combat build at all, but the end result of that is a build that really seems to fit what would be her personality. So I enjoy running around on her, but my other characters are the show horses.

For new chapters and dlc I just use a character who is a thematic fit for the new zones, typically creating a new character to play through the new zone on since I find questing more fun on lowbies.

My first character (Templar healer) is still my main; done all the WBs, zone stories, crafting, maxed antiquities, etc. No regrets there. But I hadn't played her in group content in forever. Did pledge on her the other day because it was Elden Hollow and I needed the lead, but usually I end up tanking or DPS these days, so that's one of the other 10.

Partially, the other characters are the focus because they still need things (levels in Undaunted/Fighter's/Assault, etc.) My main maxed everything long ago, so the only things to do are new content or side quests I missed along the way. Or excavate things found on my other characters, of course.

Going a step further, my second account gets a lot more attention, because it isn't max CP and currently has 2 characters that need mount training. So most days, I log into my main account briefly to collect mail, the daily reward, etc. and then actually play my second account.

(I have the second account to play class combos that are somewhat less interesting to me, so I don't fill all the slots on my main too soon. Also for RTS mail and the ability to vamp/WW myself if needed.)
    Army of me:
CP810+: Breton Templar healer, Redguard stamina Warden, Imperial DK tank, Altmer magicka Sorceror, Orc stamina Sorceror/werewolf, Nord Necromancer tank, Khajit TG/DB Nightblade, Bosmer stamina Necromancer, Argonian Warden healer, Dunmer magicka DK, Nord Nightblade tank
Second account, CP400+: Breton magicka Warden, Nord Nightblade healer/solo vampire, Bosmer stamina Templar/werewolf, Dunmer magicka Necromancer, Orc stamina DK, Argonian Warden tank

I get what you're saying. My main is always a healer. My main is a Sorceror which I healed with for a while. Until I realised although viable, other classes do a better job. So I rolled a Warden which I only do dungeons with.

So my main is now a solo specced Sorceror, tons of fun soloing bosses and melting dungeons with Crit surge running and the Pale Order Ring. He has almost all crafting research, achievements, quests, guilds, antiqueties ect.

So my actual main I don't actually do dungeons with. I have a healer and tank for that.

No. If I do not like something in the game, I change it. I have all the options to. It's one if the good things about ESO.
Besides, one can always repurpose an alt toon to still have fun regardless.

    i feel the same way.
my absolute favorite class is templar.
my first character is nightblade because it fits him story-wise.
    i'm trying to move into seeing him as my crafter & trader;
and seeing my templar as my main for everything else.

    it's working ok-ish.

ironically, my favorite role is tank- yet templars are the worst tanks.
i've been tanking with the nightblade and it's put back some enjoyment of the char for me.
try respeccing yours to something you enjoy most.

On my main account with 18 max level characters (6 classes, 3/class), I have 1 main crafter (an Imperial DK, the best racial choice for a crafter due to the free style you get on creation), but I don't consider him to be my main character.

Back in the days, due to lack of damage with my dd's, I switched a lot between characters to find out the honor of main character went to my Argonian Healplar, who was an Imperial in her previous life. But I lost the love for healing (too much crying and blaming the healer from the dd's when they died or didn't get buffed while continuous standing behind the healer, in hard hitting AoE's, or even both), so I tried some tanking (Warden and Dragonknight, which I like to do, but not that much to do the more difficult veteran content like dlc pledges and trials) and improved my damage with dd's and realized I liked playing Stamden (respecced to Healden, big mistake) and later on Stamplar the most of all the classes and roles (except Necros', they are to new for me). But maybe that's because I have good sets for stamina, but not yet for magicka (shame on me).

I consider my Stamplar as my main character (for now). I've done (vet) pledges and trails with all characters and classes, except the necromancers, with different rates of succes. And now that I recently reached cp level with my last 3 characters (all necro's) I'm preparing (gearing up, farming skillpoints and leveling skills) a Stamcro to try her out in pledges and trails too. And for what I've seen so far of her, I like it, so maybe I will switch main again.

Because gearing up is made so much easier nowadays, I'll probably endup with 18 main characters :D

This. When I bring a new character concept into being, I always find the new character to be just as important to me as my other characters. It’s like they are all little shards of my personality 😂. It would be hard to single out one and say it’s my favorite or main. Some of my characters are better at some things than others, or dedicated to certain aspects of the game.

EDIT: Sometimes when I think back on all the characters I’ve created over all the games I’ve ever played, I wonder if I’ve left too many of my “shards” behind - I sometimes find myself missing characters I’ve played in games that are long since gone. For example, I’ll never forget how devastated I was when they closed down City of Heroes 🦸‍♀️ And if (when) ESO ever comes to an end, I’m sure I’ll feel the same way all over again.

It's ok to change your main. I've made a commitment to myself to only do things that feel fun in ESO so I don't get burnt out. I have two mains because of this and it helps keep it fresh. I'm cp 1200 and still have lots to do on both chars because I am not in a rush to complete every quest or achievement, but rather to just enjoy. I have specialized alta for trial tanking and dps to give me more freedom in how I use my mains.

I like to make homages to favorite past characters. For example in FFXIV you can get NPCs called retainers, which are sort of like helper NPCs. I modelled my first one of those after my main from FFXI who I had played on for 6 years.

I also have a couple examples in ESO. My main from FFXIV was a cat person named Fuzzy Navel, so of course I have a Khajiit named Fuzzy Navel here.

Another game I played a lot of was Diablo 2. In that game I had a naming system, my main was a Necromancer named Sam Hell, all the characters I made after were named for Sam's emotional states. An idea I got from the movie Fight Club when he finds the articles written from the perspective of Jack's organs. My favorite of those characters was a leap & whirlwind barbarian named Sam's Bloody Rage. So when saw that DK has a leap ability and dual wield has a whirlwind ability I couldn't resist making a leap & whirlwind stamDK named Sam's Bloody Rage.

It's just a fun way to let those past characters live on and go on new adventures in a new world. And I find trying to recreate thier overall original feel while ensuring they're still effective in a new game with different mechanics to be a useful exercise in theorycrafting.

I was in that situation for years. My original main is a Breton sorcerer. Altmer sorcerers used to be better, however, so one became my dungeon main. And templars were clearly better healers. And I enjoyed using a thief as a landscape main.

That said, recently he became my antiquarian, and I'm approximately as happy to heal a PUG on a sorcerer as on a templar, and sorcerer is a fine solo class, so right now he's feeling fairly main-ish all the way around.

Besides, I don't like my thief as well these days, after he was both turned into a vampire and renamed Grumpy Ex Wood Elf.

I would love to switch to another class like dragonknight which I recently taken a liking to.

But having to do all achievements, crafting, skyshards, and most importantly quests put a stop to that. I despise playing a new character and have npcs everywhere asking me to do the quests I already did yet again.
