Maintenance for the week of April 6:
• PC/Mac: No maintenance – April 6

The problem with low dps classes isn't actually how hard they hit.

I noticed this, aside from a few exceptions like stam dk where the problem is actually that they hit too low compared to other classes, most of the time, the problem boils down to sustain.

Why does mag sorc no pets do less damage than all other mag classes? Because sustain.

Why does mag dk do less damage than other mag classes? Because sustain.

This is usually the case.

With decent support you can sustain easily on any class, and there are lots of workable sets for any and all group content to ensure that, and there are racial options to make it easier again in many cases. Also, more damage you do, the shorter the fight. One kind of cancels the other in that way.

MagDK... yikes, yes, RoI on skills is ridiculously low, high cost for what you actually put out, but sets like elfbane that extend your dots mean fewer casts on those and longer spam phases, effectively aiding sustain. Magsorc can build a stupid high resource pool, and casting dots dynamically to maximize their damage, and yet again, much longer spam phases than other classes (and that frag proc) translates to better sustain. On both classes, trap will increase your dps at a stamina cost, so sustain aid once more. Essentially, it's all in the build and group composition. Until recently magdk was parsing very high due to asylum staff, and magsorc has never really been a weak dps, but scaling changes on pets (free damage) just makes sense to use--shame, because I'm not fan of pets, but I'll run one if I need to.

Would it be possible to show with numbers or other evidence? What you say may be quite true, I honestly have no idea. It is of interest to me though, especially as I’ve been wanting to try making a really good DPS character and have been considering which of several classes to focus on, including sorc, but I really hate the sorc class pets. I need to have at least one DPS character uncompromised by more aesthetic or lore sensibilities, lol!

It doesn't allow me to post images on the forums, whenever i try.

But you can try yourself if you want, get the dummy, and try to compare some classes, you will notice that most classes that do low damage almost always have sustain problems.

The only exception for this is mag warden and stam dk, mag warden still does good damage even though sustain is lower compared to some other mag classes, but it's not horrible, and stam dk just doesn't hit hard enough.

You’re not wrong, sustain is crucial for any damage build. I’m not too hung up on every class having equal DPS though.

StamDK for example brings the benefit of the Stagger debuff, increasing the entire group’s damage. This would make them a valuable team member even if they were several % lower in personal DPS. The main problem is that Stone Giant feels bad to use with its ranged/melee alternating and cast time.

Magicka Nightblade is the opposite, it brings nothing useful to a group, and therefore must be higher personal DPS.
