Problem targeting Shades in Vateshran Hollows...

Greetings guys.

I am stuck at last boss in Vateshran Hollows (veteran mode) because I cannot kill the Shades or when I manage to do it, it's like 50% chance of success. The reason is not DPS but the fact I cannot target them at all. Every single time either an add or the boss will stay in front of the Shade and make attacking it impossible. All my attacks are wasted at unimportant adds or boss itself, causing me to wipe again and again. I managed to get past 2nd miniboss and wiped again for the same issue. Even locking the target does not work.

Anyone else has the same issue or has an advice that can help me?

I play as a magsorc.

When in doubt change to another shade. You have 25 seconds to burst one down and if you got the right buffs it should be fairly easy enough to pull off. I did have to use Engulfing Flames one time when I had no choice but to burst down a shade that was surrounded so I guess equip a spammable AoE attack?

I've been having the same issue. The ads will absolutely block you from the shade you've targeted AND they will try to block you if you move to another. What I've been doing is just bursting them down through the mob. Unless you get sandwiched between the shade and an ad and can't back up because one is behind you (which has happened to me in there and why oh why is that a thing in there?) you can usually do enough damage to get the shade even though the collosi and other ads will block you. It will come down to the last second though because you only get a clear shot once the shades have closed in far enough.

But I completely agree with you regarding the ads. The way they block the shade you've picked is annoying af.

It's not easy to do when you're melee because the seconds that it takes you to run to the next shade. Also, the colossi will just follow you to the next one you pick. I imagine that isn't a big issue for mag toons since you can just turn in a direction and use range abilities but it very much is for melee. I try to pick the farthest one away to begin with because it takes the colossi a second to catch up before they start serving as a human shield.

On a lower damage build I got a wall each time. Thus, the best tactic was to save ultimate for a shade as there's no race to burning the boss (to skip walls).

What others suggest above: pick a shade not in line with adds and/or a far one. Then get 1/2 ST dots on it. Drop AOE Dots then ultimate. DB or destro works fine; some classes have better options. AOE DoTs such as wall, orb, hail, etc. Then if adds get in the way use a ranged AOE burst skill (eg unstable wall or silver shards). On stam you can also stand there and spin to win or brawler but you do risk slipping a little and touching the shade (=death). If you are wearing VO, be careful of expedition procs.

I use an AOE spammable on the shade(whirling blades), it cuts though all the adds while still hitting the shade. It works reasonably well as long as you make sure to save up resources for when they appear.

Are you picking up the buffs in the earlier arenas? Those help immensely. Also, use a cheap ult like Dawnbreaker so you can dump it on the shades every time.

#1 cause of death in that fight is exactly the problem the OP describes.

Streak. Tab target. Destro ult. <- one of these 3 should work.

Ps: I am not sure I got it right, we are talking about the wall right?

Managed to clear the vet VH arena.

I had to change sets to Noble Duelist+Torugs+Pale Order+1P Domihaus and managed to burn everything pretty fast, almost got no death too (accidentally died once).

It's the magsorc build from here, with small adjustments

But the problem is still there. To be able to kill shades I had to keep distance and try to position other adds on my sides and not in front. One moment I almost wiped because of it again but thankfully the shade got killed by my pet literally a second before the 1-shot.

What I dont understand is why the lock target isnt working. ZOS should check this issue, it's very annoying and turns our efforts to a waste of time.

Yeah but tab target aint working. Other adds still block shade. I also keep ultimate for mini-bosses.

It is working for me just need to aim better (you still need the tab targeted target to be in the middle of the screen). I usually use destro ult on first wall, then kill first 2 minis without it, then upstairs hit boss hard from 40 to 10 real quick without wall danger, then for 3rd mini (I like fire last, weird enough) I just burn him in destro together with his stupid mage, then execute the poor boss which is 30%. But hey. Streak is always an option :laughs in being stuck with streak instead of spammable on last add pack before fire boss in 3rd portal: (oops)

You have been better off with mothers sorrow over torugs pact, aoe dmg is more important than single target for a lot of the fights, especially the last boss.
Regardless. heavy attack builds have it easy in the last boss fight as you have great aoe thru tri-focus.
