Husan✭✭✭✭✭I might be wrong, but I believe extended in this sentence means "take a long time" and not "take longer than expected". Ofcourse the "while we investigate a technical issue" doesn't help my point, but it might just be a copy/pasted message they used before. Could be a just a mistake by an intern told to put a message on the forums.
Then again, thinking about the past maintenances that were extended, maybe they have become a bit self aware and are just preparing us to what's to come

I guess it's time to finish Morrowind main quest and maybe start Oblivion... and probably finish Oblivion's main quest and guild questlines too... and then reinstall Skyrim and play through mods... and maybe then the maintenance will be done. Maybe. And then we'll have to wait several more hours for them to fix the new ***-ups to be able to log in.

Thank you - one of the big problems with ESO is that it's really hard to tell when something is known about, likely to get fixed, can't be fixed soon etc, so more information and things like putting the banner up for extended maintenance early I find really helpful and appreciate.

And of course if they bring the server up at 19:00CEt, the login server will once again explode. and probably the entire server as well due to the item collection system cataloguing millions of items at once.
This happens pretty much, Every.Single.Update.
