Tbf, skyshards were out years before they appeared in the CS. It was us playing the game that asked for them. they weren't just put there randomly. Ditto for skill lines. These forums were littered by posts asking ZoS to take their money. However, I do kinda believe the Psijic skill line was made the way it was because they knew CS skill line purchases were incoming.

From a design perspective, couldn't ZOS just have made it so that once you unlock skyshards in a zone, that they are unlocked for the entire account? I am sure there are some die hard players who would prefer to grind them again, for those folks there could be a toggle.
I don't think players are actually screaming that they WANT to spend crowns, in as much as its the only way to really get ZOS' attention, and secondly its more said in jest.
That being said, ZOS did not need to charge literally hundreds of dollars to unlock skyshards FOR ONE CHARACTER. It could have been less expensive by factors of 10, and been account wide.
The 7000 dollar plus requirement (meaning these are necessary for end game, but are time gated and mundane to start with) to unlock skyshards and skill lines for 17 characters is a bit over the top don't you think?

Maybe, but unlikely. The Psijic Skill line was designed as an educational tool. It's supposed to teach you how to play. Infuse is, straight up, an attempt to introduce players to weaving without "breaking character."
So, while it's possible that skill line had ulterior motives, a large part of it was, straight up, trying to get new players up to speed.

They could have done a lot of things. Back before this was announced, I was asking for maps as voucher furnishings which would let you learn all the shards in a given zone (with the original furnishing gated by the completion achievements.) (Also, motif and recipe libraries with a mechanic where when you interact you can copy your known motif/recipes/furnishing designs to it, or learn copies of everything copied to it.

If that’s the case, why lock it behind such a dreadful grind? I guess the first time isn’t bad, might even chuckle at some of the things the kiwi skull says. But after that? It’s not even the first skill you learn, for heavens sake. IMO, if they just really wanted to reinforce weaving with new players, since it’s such a fundamental skill, they wouldn’t have locked it behind a paywall and a grind.
