Mail refreshing sucks

I still do not understand why do I have to leave the zone to get items which I bought or wait random amount of time.

Am I doing something wrong or is it just so pathetic? Can someone explaing that to me?

    Sadly.

You don't always - it will turn up eventually.

In many cases if you ignore the fact it says you have no mail, and you have no current unread mail before you buy then if you click on the mail icon where it says you have no mail you will get your mail anyway.

I'd assume the servers and game have to go checking if you have mail and that isn't done continually for lag and scaling reasons but on zone changes and when you go into mail. Still works better than half our real postal services ;-)

Too many toons not enough time

If you buy something at the traders (could be several things) and you open up mail, it will appear immediatelly. If you then go buy something else, it won't. You can either wait for 5+ minutes, change zones, or relog. Seems to be an inherent "cooldown" on manual mail refresh. I don't know if that is the case and why but I'm sure ZOS knows (/s).

It's really annoying. I'm sure it refreshes so slowly for performance reasons, but you would think they could add a refresh button with a minute cooldown or so.

While this is a minor inconvenience since it is simple to travel, I would not suggest it is pathetic. Heck, often after I purchase something I am traveling somewhere anyhow.

Husan brings up what looks like a good point.

[snip] Instead of having a light touch mail checking option, people wanting to do mail check now do an instance port which will cause a much more performance expensive full character load into a new instance. Classical case of trying to do optimisation and ending up with much worse than without.

Well, a system that constantly check if there is new mail for thousands of players would be costly, and wouldn't be worth it, IMO.

A good compromise would be to implement a command, such as "/mailrefresh"
That would effectively remove the pain of having to load another zone.

But why would the game client need to check for new mail at all? The server just should push down any new mail to the client when it arrives, the client should not need to initiate anything. Client polling is previous century technology from the '90es, it's 2020 now, push notifications hello??

Exactly. It's the only game I play that requires re-zoning to get mail. All others seem to handle mail instantly (many much older games as well).

COD is usually faster. It's like real life mail. Usually takes 5-20 minutrs for me to get emails sent from people.

All I know is that the past 3 years of playing ESO, mail has never worked as one would expect it.
When I play WOW, and I buy something off the auction house, I see the mail icon pop up on my minimap the second I hit the purchase button. Same thing in SWTOR. I can't understand for the life of me how such as basic feature of a game can be overlooked for literal YEARS.

There is only one reason that the mail in ESO does not work.
