What do you use alts for?

a change from my main. to play other classes/roles or to just grind out daily writs

I get different ideas and want to try something new, or I read about. Once created they feel like part of the adventuring group, so they get their own house or apartment to stay in and hang out until some event makes it worthwhile to run all the alts each day for that specific event. And since there are so many different ways to level up and so much content now, trying different plans for leveling to see what is the most fun for me . Example - Mainline quest plus Alliance and Fighters and Mage sort of 'in concert'. Or, target a zone and clear all quests and achievements. Or Target an expansion and do the Prelude(s) and entire questline through that expansion.

    Or just go fishing

One character is my main crafter, so he rarely goes out adventuring (not a lot of skill points available after spending them on most of the crafting passives) Only thing he doesn't have is nirnhorn ( nirnhoned ? ... nirn-something ) because I'm just kinda lazy and haven't bought any pieces

Alts also give me a variety of 'looks' to compare since you can't change the looks without spending 1000 crowns. Sometimes you just want to see what a different hair color would look like on the character, or something minor like that and its just not worth the crown cost.

And I also like pairing up themes with the mounts and noncombat pets. Example - Hollowjack armor on character, Nightmare mount, nightmare style puppy.

I also keep one vampire that can bite, even though I don't like the changes to vampire, just in case someone pops up in chat looking for the bite.

Most alts I have are between levels 16 - 35 Only 2 characters are 50/475

Of course, every new character I make, I decide - THIS one I am going to follow this plan and stick with it.

    yeah, right ... LOL

Have one of each class. They all do a bit of everything, pve, pvp, tanking, writs etc, but I think of each of them as being more specialised in certain roles eg
    - magsorc: primary dps, main crafter
    - stamblade: primary quester, main harvester
    - magdk: primary pvp
    - stam warden: primary tank
    - magtemp: primary healer
    - magblade: errrm. Baby toon. Theoretically for baby pvp in icereach etc but still working on his horse

I play them all, but find as a sort of rough rule that (other than writs) three toons is the most I can realistically get around in a day. By the time Ive done say pledges on one, some pvp on another and retired to a third for some gentle questing once things get busy thats about it. I try to rotate it every few days to keep fresh tho

I have characters for each spec, and a couple of duplicate specs that are for either PvP or different roles. I enjoy playing with my alts, and all of my alts are geared, with the necessary skill lines obtained, but only a few have proper or meta builds, the rest have not so optimal sets, so I have to swap gear around when I play with them. Only my main has all crafts max levelled, so it's the only character that can do max writs, a couple of others have a few crafts levelled, but generally I'm very behind crafting on alts, and I don't think I'll ever get all of them levelled, let alone any of them having reserach traits.

I have 15 characters now on EU - and a couple on NA, but I'm not playing there currently. I play them as a team, working economically together, but otherwise they are on their own (well, one of them is crafting their jewelry and another one is crafting their staffs, because just she has the ability to craft that style). But otherwise each is on his/her own.

I added one lately, because I wanted to try out the necromancer class. It's fun and she is my first dunmer - I just forgot to create a dunmer before, so I had to do this now. I still have no vampire, so if I add another one it will be a dunmer vampire.

Ah well, the purpose - that I can avoid advancing quickly in level and nevertheless play through story content - each one does different kind of quests. The game for me is level 1-50 - beyond that I'm not interested in and end game means for me "end of game". So I try to stay below level 50 for as long as I can while still playing through story content.

Hm, why don't they have research traits? - all you have to do is craft them some stuff with the character who has them and then let them learn those. It's pretty cheap, you just need a low level item with the trait.

    Tank main. 7 alts
    1 Healer alt
    6 DPS alts
Attempting to create a stam and mag dps from every class and an alt from every race
Most are muling, 2 of them are below CP, the others are fully geared though out of meta gear by now.

I have a ton of alts and use them as....

-Playing new classes or new forms of classes (stam or mag) on a race more qualified for it
    -aesthetics
-Writs. I make a decent amount of gold doing these on alts that do nothing else.
PC NA. Various alts, trying to find a main, I have no idea what I'm doing.

Yeah, I know, it'd be pretty easy to do, and I could even get them reduced timer scrolls with my vouchers etc., I just nevet get around to it :D I don't do writs on multiple toons anyway, I'm the worst at optimizing my crafting potential

I use one of my alts for occasional roleplay and questing with the hubby, but at this point, I'm using my alts primarily for hireling mails. I have my main and five alts, each with different skill levels in each discipline, so I can get mats of all kinds.

I have 11 characters and like to vary it up. I like to try differen't races, classes and personalities. I like to roleplay them and build houses for them. I don't have as much time as I'd like but it's fun to have variation although I mostly play my main khajiit stamina nightblade.

I haven't read all the comments yet, but those I have read make some good points. However, to answer the original question, I use alts for enjoyment.

A wild concept, I know, but I've enjoyed making new characters with different racial/skillsets just to enjoy and experience as much of the game as I can. It may be the same game, but it's through "new eyes" as each character has a different perspective/way of interacting with the world (and I'm not talking role-playing, I'm talking skills/abilities/killing things differently). My "main" is the one that I try to achieve everything on, but the others are there for enjoyment purposes.

I don't care about "bis" or maximizing my dps on these characters. They're novelty. They're simplyFUN to play.

That said, I have 18 characters on one server, 9 on another, and each one sort of develops their own personality through play, which lends itself well for character/world-building. It's hard not to sort of come up with an outline for a backstory on some of these, but that's a fun discovery in and of itself.
