Which base game homes have people enjoyed decorating the most? Or DLC home that can be purchased with gold? I'm trying to start decorating and playing with housing. Curious what others have found fun to start with.
Hunding's Palatial Hall. Nice House and Beach area, plus you can build to the roof of the house and add all sorts of stuff up there, as well as add a dock, etc.
I personally really like the Ald velothi Harbor house (dlc home) due to the large yard and spacious inside. I’ve redecorated that home a few times. Black Vine Villa is another favorite of mine for “spooky” houses since it’s such a dark home. It also has a good home/yard ratio in my opinion. Lastly, I really like Mournoth Keep for a true “castle” type home. I really like the yard for that one, and has a lot of building potential.
Have only done Mournoth, so not an educated opinion, but really enjoyed it. Not enough to get into housing bigtime, but worth the piles of gold spent on it to do once. What I liked most about it is that it's big enough to get creative with and do lots of exterior construction, but not too big that large parts of it will be empty or underdecorated.
As an aside, the HUGE Elsweyr rectangular and square platforms you get from running certain dungeons ( or on the guild trader) worked really well on Mournoth, and are worth looking into for other housing for those who haven't experimented with them yet. Cost about 12k ea on guild traders. Used just three of them to turn the whole left side of the keep into a continuous platform that runs all the way to the edge of the front left wall for a -great- view, pavilion and storm porch (orc gazebo), and they match the preexisting masonry well enough. Was then able to build another raised platform for a "telescope" (gussied up, backlit orrery) that solved the problem of the orrery being too large and obtrusive on the main grounds. The tops of the platforms are cracked and ugly, but can be remedied with large floor coverings... unless cracked and ugly fits the theme, then you are good as is. If you end up with something big enough to take advantage of them, check them out on ESO fashion.
Gorinir Estate hands down.
It is such an under dog, but can be transformed into anything. i have big tree houses and about 500 new trees, it looks like a beautiful magical Forrest now.
Hard choice between the Domus Phrasticus and Ravenhurst, but I lean towards the Domus as far as base houses go. The house itself has a lot of potential (you can easily divide the floors to create more rooms), and the yard is quite spacious. Mournoth Keep is nice, too, if you fancy a mini fortress.

Base game? Oh, Gardner House. It is big enough that I can get a lot of cool rooms set up, but not so big it looks like an empty museum lol. It also feels like a house, not a huge warehouse. The basement was easy to divide up into four rooms and upstairs became a bedroom, some sitting areas, and a chemistry/alchemy room. It's cozy but spacious.
I must add I equally adore the Alinor Townhouse and Also Velothi Harbour House. I know those came with expansions but I just love them all. They all fit their owners well.
The base-game house I've had the most fun with is Ravenhurst. It's a good size, it has some nice architectural features, and the exterior is spacious enough for some interesting 'gardening'.
The house I've really enjoyed decorating the most, though, was the Exorcised Coven Cottage. It's an intimate space with a large-ish item count, so I was really able to go crazy there.

Most fun to decorate and most fun to start with are different. I had the most fun decorating my Daggerfall Overlook but I wouldn't recommend starting with that if you're only just getting into housing.
The reason why I liked the Overlook was its style and its size. It's the only castle-like house in the game with the 'proper' stone I want to see (I'm not a big fan of the chipped-away white plaster in the other Breton homes). Since the house is so large, I also had fun customizing its interior. Figuring out a way to create all the rooms I wanted (three bedrooms, bathroom, separate library, etc) and building the interior layout myself was a lot of fun.
@TheNightflame The Domus has a larger yard, but Ravenhurst has a nicer looking yard, for sure. Plus the windmill views! I named it the WIndmill House and built a viewing stand against the wall to look out at the mill and the river; it's lovely!

If we are talking large houses, Hunding's is the best base game house, in my opinion.
Only downside is it is pretty big (Manor/Notable sized) and so could do with a 700 limit.
The other nice one is Old Mistveil and that doesn't suffer from having a too-low limit for the size.
Best gold-only purchase was the Topal island.
The Hew's Bane Palace is nice, but lighting and decorating it is hard on 700 slots.
The Meadow is also gorgeous, but would only be enjoyable to decorate if you don't mind building first, with the limited range of building items this game makes available.
If we're talking starting out, I would go with Twin Arches and Autumn's Gate and then progress on to Grymharth's Woe and Ald Velothi.
Thanks all for your responses! So many great suggestions that made me more excited to get into housing. I decided on Autumn's Gate and found a lot of great inspiration on the forums. It's barely started but making extremely slow progress! I used to have gold...
I enjoyed decorating Mornouth Keep. Making the inside look less gaunt was a challenge but satisfying once I was done. Still have to add the merchant, maps etc before I'm done. Will be working getting the Glenumbra Adventurer achievement so I can get Hunding's Palatial Hall. These are old images I've added more items since then.

Hunding's Palatial Hall was my favorite base game place to decorate, hands down. I fell in love with it early on and it was the first property I saved up to buy. It is the one I would most like to live in if it was a real place. I cannot express enough my love for that raised platform in the back and its view of the ocean. I put a cozy breakfast nook up there and I would love nothing more than to sit up on such a place with such a view with a cup of coffee on a warm evening, watching the sun go down and listening to the sea and crickets and seagulls.
Looking forward to getting Hunding's Palatial Hall. It's one of the few Large homes that competes with Manor Estates. It's a shame ZOS doesn't allow you upgrade the slot limit of smaller homes. It would still be at 700 slot limit but in a smaller home you can do more with it. Sorry for going on that rant. Hunding's Palatial Hall is one best bang for your buck homes you can in ESO.
Hunding's, Gorinir and Dawnshadow were all really fun to decorate, and with different atmospheres. Hunding's is huge outside and inside, has a beach, and you can also decorate up to a certain point out in the sea, and also on the roof! Gorinir is big, and although it has the tree pods, you can make many structures around them or build vertically, in fact I've seen beautiful castle builds in Gorinir. Dawnshadow doesn't have as big an outside space, but imo, it's a great medium house, and nice for making cottages or farms.
Gornir Estate and Kragenhome (come visit my Ashfall Cornerclub ) I love nature and all things Elven but never cared for the Auridon architecture nor the layouts of some of the larger estates that I might otherwise be drawn to. I also really like my Snugpod because the furnishing limit lets you do a lot with the space and it really is convenient to everything!
Exorcised Coven Cottage. An intimate space you can really cozy up and still have generous room for outdoor construction. I made two additional structures with the Solitude furnishings, and everything is nestled in the middle of a forest. It was priced modestly too, something like 250k gold, and it comes with lots of ambient atmosphere (mist, rain, croaking frogs, hooting owls, distant thunder, pale sun beams in the morning).
