Do I have to become a healer, dps or tank?

Howdai!

I spread my point equally between magicka, health and stamina. For PVE seems to work, but anyone can do that. Seems like I have enough stam to keep up the fight, deal a little damage, the health buffers big hits, the magicka, heal or attack. As a templar, I seem to be a bit more on the tanky side. I feel flexible.

In PVP, how badly will I get pummeled? In dungeons, how badly will I get shunned?

Anyone play like this?

Or must I spec 100% and choose a class - DPS, Healer or Tank.

Would love to hear opinions!

You’d only really need to focus on specs for veteran dungeons and trials. You’ll be fine for normal dungeons. As for PvP, yes you will struggle, but do and play however you want!

If you go into a vet dungeon or trial with a hybrid build expect to get kicked because chances are you won't be able to do your job there properly, no matter what role you chose. For normal everything you can pretty much do what you like and get away with it, but vet dlcs and vet trials, not so much.

Funny thing is, what I call the "mix and match" builds works very well in pvp, better often than "pure" builds. But it doesn't fly in harder pve content. Pvp and pve are two very different beasts and allows for very different setups and play styles. Don't expect one way to be useful in everything, because it won't.

In group content, its more about doing your assigned job. It matters less how you do it as long as you can do it.

A tank needs to be able to hold boss aggro and not die. Crowd control, debuffs and group buffs are great.
A healer needs to heal the group and stay alive. Group buffs and extra damage are great.
A damage dealer needs to deal damage necessary to complete the content. 10-15k DPS is sufficient for most normal dungeons, though higher DPS will make for a more comfortable clear. Vet requirements are obviously harder.

If you can do your chosen role on a hybrid build, great! If not, you need to specialize for the benefit of your group.

No need to start again buddy. In each big town their is an autel where you can reset those point.
The 2 easier to find are close to Alinor TP (the chapel near wayshrine) and Grathwood just turn camera and you'll find it.

Now, you ask the wrong question. It's not "what I should player ?" but "What YOU wanna player ?"
Which role you want to assume ?
- Magicka DPS : All point in magicka
- Stamina DPS : All point in stamina
- Healer : All point in magicka
- Tank : gear and food up, then put point to have at least 35k HP and 20k stam (need more stam than magika)

If new, I won't recommende Tank even if it's the most needed class. Why ? Cuz Tank are the worst at flexibility, Tank need to have at least 2 full set of gear, different food and different skill.
1 set-up for Tank and 1 set-up for open world (spread stat = less dmg)
The 3 other don't have this problem, even healer can go with few DD skill in his bar when need to do open world story/farm.

@Zama666 the best way is to main a DPS that slots and levels skills for tanking or healing that you think you might want to do int he future. Be warned, however, some classes are not conducive to some roles. For instance, a DK will (normally) do very well as a DPS and a Tank, but not well as a healer. Whereas a Sorc will do well as a DPS and Healer, but not as a Tank. Races also play a role, but more for min/maxing.

Either way, level skills as a DPS. You can't go around healing your way through overland content.

Thanks - interesting. Solo tanking is not bad, because I just outlast the opponents. But tanks in PVE...have good is that going to be.

Always cool to see DPS blow things away with a single hit, but then they must be squishy.
Healers, not the sexist role, but needed....they are so nice.

Curious - what do you recommend for your tanking set

You can do anything you want in ESO. However, that does not mean the build will be very strong in any manner. Regardless, that is a choice and as long as you are not in the more challenging vet content it should not be a big deal.

Curious - what do you recommend for your tanking set

For open world and solo ? I don't play it as Tank. I slap hunding + acolyte (2 medium crafted set ), add bow + 2h axe, werewolf ult and destroy everything in open world.

For gear when Tanking in group content, it depend of your level, of group level, of content, etc.
When you strat, Poet + Ebon are very good beginner set, Senchal defender instead of ebon when you struggle with ressource.
Once you get enough CP to have better mitigation, change poet for ebon or another set that help group.
Little by little while getting good you'll drop all selfish set for group utility set like Yolna, alkosh, ebon, torug, etc..

To OP, you can specialise in one attribute (magicka/stamina) then use food buff and gear to make up for any other shortfalls that may be evident.
