What set to pair with War maiden on solo Magplar

So I’ve been meaning to do this for quite a while. I have been running Mother’s Sorrow and Julianos on my solo magplar forever and the changes to war maiden look very interesting.

But the question now is what do I pair it with? I can do any combination of War Maiden with Mother’s Sorrow, Julianos, or Overwhelming surge right now. Which of those would work best? Would pairing it with something like NMA or BSW be a better combo?

I use lightning staves for solo play and have a maelstrom backbar. I don’t have a monster set on this build at the moment to keep my 5pc bonus on both bars. That also helps me to mix/match all my sets easier. Any insight would be appreciated.

If you pair it with Burning Spell Weave you could further boost your spell damage by even more, and it does stay active if you bar swap! New Moon Acolyte got nerfed a little in Stonethorn and isn't as desirable of a set now, but BSW procs on any form of flame damage. Even if you don't run with a Flame Staff you could use Sun Fire to proc it easily.

But this is coming from a Magicka Dragonknight main and I have not really played Templar much. If your critical chance is pretty low I'm sure the more critical focused sets will be better for you, but if you have plenty of crit 490 spell damage for 8 seconds every 12 seconds is pretty good! 190 more than Julianos but you have to keep the 4 second downtime in mind when reapplying DoTs and using certain ultimates.

Julianos would be fine, it's what I use. MS would probably work too if you need more crit, but you should be above 50% with just those sets.

I’ve got a MagDK I’m looking at pairing BSW with medusa or elfbane. It’s actually my hardest hitting character but she’s super squishy.

Crits aren’t an issue. I can’t think of my % off the top of my head but all of my builds are in the 60% range a few go over 70. I have flame and lightning staves for the build, prefer lightning to solo, flame for groups though I usually stick with lightning anyway for the extra off balance procs and aoe with heavy attacks. That and it’s easier to see where my heavy attacks are landing.

For me the appeal of Julianos is that I can mix/match heavy pieces for extra resistance if I need. Anyway this is an experiment for now I’m just curious to see how the numbers will land. Thx for the input.

For PvE magplar (even solo) you want 5 light armor, because the spell crit & penetration from the last two light armor passives require 5 light. So you can mix and match, but it will cut into your damage significantly. Swapping one light piece for a heavy one won't give you that much more resistance, but increasing damage can help survivability. Having the magicka recovery to heal yourself and keep Harness Magicka (light armor shield) will help for survivability more than like a few thousand armor. Can go for more Heavy Armor if you like, of course. People totally do run heavy armor solo builds

I personally would go for War Maiden's & Mother's Sorrow. Magplars get an extra 10% crit damage bonus, and people actually use War Maiden + Mother's Sorrow in endgame trial content, so it's valid for all skill levels. But either Mother's Sorrow or Julianos would buff your heals as well as damage, so both will probably fit your purposes.

@Everest_Lionheart I would also recommend checking out Torug's Pact. It is decently buffed in Stonethorn. And the cost to get it is really low. I believe it is 3 traits to craft. Besides, if you are looking to Solo mainly, it helps much more with survivability than most other sets.
And if you use infused lightning staffs on both bars, the enchantmant power is through the roof. Weapon Glyph should give you 655 spell power and frontbar 6399 shock damage or 3057 crusher enchant or a damge shield for 6201 points at 0CP in Bastion.

Another option is Innate Axiom, which buffes damage of class abilities. On my MagBlade this combi gives me a tooltipp of over 20k damage for concealed weapon. I expect Sweeps will benefit a lot from it. And on a solo MagPlar I would guess you run mostly class abilities?

Anyways, my experience with Julianos is better than Mothers Sorrow. I feel any crit percentage over 50 is a loss of opportunity. Crit damage or raw power win from there on.

Edit: looked up the enchantment numbers.

If anyone here says: OH! But, PVP! I swear I'll ...

Thank you for the valuable input and respectfully recommend to discuss that aspect of ESO on the PVP forum.

I actually used to run innate axiom and war maiden while I was farming MS on this toon. That’s back before this round of changes. Because it added health before I always felt like it lacked a certain punch to it. I guess it’s worth a look again.

Last night I tested MS + WM against my MS + Juli on a 3 mil. I came out with 27.3K DPS with WM and 27.8K on my original set. No significant change there. Will try the other setup tonight and see how that goes.

As for class abilities outside most of them are Templar class skills except for ele drain, wall of elements, channeled acceleration and degeneration. I like degeneration + channeled accel because it lets me solo using trash pots even in boss fights.

Why not go with Medusa? Its a heavy set but you can mix and match to get whatever armor bonuses you want and it gives almost as much crit as MS. But you get the minor force so you don't have to slot trap and can replace it with a heal or other DD skill. I'm running it with False Gods. Love it.

Farming it for MagDK and trying to get 1 set is hard enough. I don’t use trap or magplar anyway, even though it’s got the awkward cast time I prefer degeneration whether I’m running solo or group because the uptime is so much better and I prefer getting that extra spamable in the regular rotation and also casting it before execution phase where it will last the whole time. More Jesus beams, less bar swaps win/win!
