Maelstrom staff/build

Hi,

I am following a build from Alcast for solo magicka templar which calls for the following in gear setup 2.

Chest - Law of Julianos
Belt - Law of Julianos
Shoes - Law of Julianos
Pants - Law of Julianos
Hands - Law of Julianos
Head - Iceheart
Shoulder - Iceheart
Necklace - Mother's sorrow
Ring - Mother's Sorrow
Ring - Mother's sorrow
Weapon 1 - Mother's Sorrow lightning staff
Weapon 2 - Crushing Wall or Mother's sorrow

I have all the set except the iceheart helm which i'm working on getting and I have just obtained a Normal Maelstrom staff but my question is, and I apologise if this sounds like a noob question but I don't know much about the maelstrom set.

Going off that build if I was to use the Maelstrom weapon on the back bar then I would lose the 5 set bonus from Mother's sorrow, so I figured that there must be a gain from using the Maelstrom staff. The Maelstrom staff says in the tooltip that you get the benefit from the 2 items equipped

Can someone explain to me the benefit of dropping 5th set bonus from mother's sorrow to a single Maelstrom staff on backbar please?

The idea is, that you don't spend much time on your backbar, basically just a few seconds to keep up the wall. You're not losing too much by dropping the 5 piece bonusduring that time, but on the other hand, the bonus from the maelstrom staff carries over to the mainbar as long as the wall is up, meaning your LA and HA deal more damage.

And if the dam breaks open many years too soon
And if there is no room upon the hill
And if your head explodes with dark forebodings too
I'll see you on the dark side of the moon

So you don't HAVE to have 2 Maelstrom weapons equipped to receive that LA HA bonus?

    No, of course not!
A staff counts as two pieces. Same goes for any 2 handed weapon btw.. bows etc. They're all 2 pieces. when it comes to set boni.

Ah damn, all this time I have been thinking that 2 items was (2 of the same items) as in set pieces

Thanks for clearing that up for me, feel like a complete tool now

Switch to backbar, throw down a Wall of Elements, back to front bar and any light attacks to an enemy in the WoE takes extra light attack damage

I’ve always wondered about that. I assumed that as soon as you switch off the back bar you LOSE the bonus to light and heavy attack because in other cases when switching bars in a way that breaks up a 5 piece set don’t you lose the 4th and 5th bonuses then?

A question along the same line...is it worth losing a 4 and 5 set piece bonus by using a Master’s Staff on the front bar for the Shock Clench feature AND a Maelstrom Staff on the back bar? If not, which of those staves is better to use in a build?

Using a master staff front bar you would lose a LOT of crit that applies to all abilities to marginally buff only one ability(shock clench) so no, it would not be worth it at all. That being said, there are places where a master staff is better than a maelstrom staff...namely PvP where you make heavy use of shock and flame clench.

The effect of the Unstable Wall is calculated and triggered when you cast it and it remains attached to the spell as long as it lasts. Similar to effects like Siroria for example, which wears off when the timer runs out and not when you swap the bar.

I don't find crushing wall all that useful in real terms unless the target is kept stationary such as a boss. Trash mobs tend not to last long enough for any real benefit to be noticed so I tend to just full front and back bar my preferred setup then equip maelstrom for bosses only.

Let me guess, someone stole your sweetroll!
