Do dungeons continue any storyline? Or are they essentially one-shots?

Just curious about this because I am about to do a play through where I only run dungeons once discovered by my character... Giving it more of a roleplay feel. But if they are part of a story, I dont want to skip the lead up, if this makes sense. :) thank you in advance!

    Anything before Elsweyr has their own stories each. After Elsweyr they are part of the one year long story. (also their own stories)

    Since ZOS started doing seasons, dungeons contain teensy bit of a story and it basically goes in chronological order. Q1 are a bit more important than Q3, I think.
    Also Lair of Maarselok continues story of Selene's Web, and Icereach is tied to Direfrost Keep because, well, Drodda was of Icereach.

    The rest are standalone, I believe

    Depths of Malatar/Frostvault have a connection to Volenfell, so do Vol first. Also, in Alik'r, there is a trail of breadcrumbs in delves that will lead you to Volenfell.

    The original dungeons had a tenuous connection to their zone, so they are a bit like a side quest hub that doesn't affect the main story.

    Any dungeon that has a I and a II version, the II is the continuation of the I story.

    Those dungeons that have a part one and two share their story line. If you are in for the story, always do part one before part two.
    Additionally there are some cases where a overworld quest leads to a dungeon or where you meet a dungeon npc again in a different dungeon or quest.
    e.g. Tharayya
    You search for her in a Overland quest, then find her in Volenfell, meet her again in Malatar and Frostvault and finally in a quest for the Elsweyr chapter.
    Even raids are part of quest lines.

    So if you don't want to skip story parts, you should do the base game dungeons after you finished questing in that zone or are lead to the dungeon by a quest and do all dlc content in chronological order how it was added to the game.

    This but they are also essentially somewhat part of a bigger story related to undaunted. Not to different than the group delves and regular delves in a zone.

    However, as Weer said the newer devles, starting last year, are part of the story for the entire year. In all honesty, I expect this was done to try to sell more ESO+/dungeon DLCs.

    Most are one-shots.
    White Gold Tower caps off the Imperial City main questline.
    Selene's Web and Lair of Maarselok are a continuation of each other.
    The two Wrathstone dungeons give contrxt to how Abnur Tharn got the Wrathstone in the Elsweyr Prologue.
    The two Harrowstorm dungeons give context to Greymoor and introduce Fennorian. However, a lot of this ground gets retread in the Greymoor Prologue and Greymoor itself.

    Base game dungeons that have a 1 and 2 version tend to have a loose story where 1 should be done before 2.

    There is also a loose quest chain of dwemer delves in Alikr. If one visits the dwemer delve not far from Sentinel (southwest-ish), a quest starter book will be found that leads one through all the dwemer delves to find the next book in the chain. It ultimately ends up at the dwemer group dungeon where if one continues to speak to the NPC it will lead one into the quest there. If one is interested in the back story as to why the NPC is in that group dungeon, its a nice little chain to follow. Unfortunately, each book in the chain can start the quest and the quest will only go from that point forward. Anything in the chain previous will be skipped.
