Shield - what does it do?

icanhazfacemelt
Besides the armor boost, does the shield provide any passive block/mitigation? Or it it only when you're actively blocking? In that way, how is it much different from blocking with a 2 hander (other that it might block a bit more)?

Trying to figure out if it's worth continuing with a sword and board build or revert back to 2 hander for more dps.

Blocks more, adds more armor, costs less to block/bash with, has a whole skill line for tanking... The list goes on.

When you block with a shield, you absorb much more damage. There are passive skills that increase this, too (and reduce the stamina cost). As well, you have the shield armor. And you can shield bash.

There is also an attack that reduces the targets armor, and some abilities have snare or stun effects. There is also a gap closing charge attack.

You won't believe how much fun a shield assault followed up by a reverberating bash can be. Also, flip from absorb magic and DK spell reflection abilities ... very fun against sorcs. I had a sorc kill himself from a spell reflect!
