Main Questline Change - No Need to Level Mages Guild Now?

I am fairly sure the main questline from the original base game required Mages Guild to be at 5 in the past. That seems to be gone now, since I have had a few alts make it along the chain without getting to 5 in Mages Guild.

Has anyone else seen this?

It would be a very good change in my view if I am correct in what I think I am seeing!

I don't remember there ever being a guild requirement of any kind in the main quest line.

The main quest was tied to levels I think? That was when all the zones were leveled.

Correct ... no level requirement now.

Since there is no requirement for any character to join the Mages' guild, why would you have to level it to 5?

The only reason my characters join is because of the Persuade skill. Which you can get as soon as you join, iirc. I haven't made a new character for a while, so its kind of vague.

You only need to be rank 5 in the Mages Guild to be able to do the last quest in the Mages Guild quest line. The main quest doesn't have any level requirements anymore and is independent of the Mages Guild.

Every quest for the Fighters, Mages, and main quest were unlocked every 5 levels back in the past. This is no longer the case.

Way back when, the main quest and the zone quests and the guild quests were tied together by levels. Since going to a new zone started the guilds harassing you for help, it seemed like it was more tied together than just levels.

Now, you can do the mages guild in an hour. However, you still need the Blue Lore Books to get Meteor. Note, stick to one Alliances zones for the main chunk of books, then you only have to do about 3 more zones to complete.
Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

I know how to get the books. A pain, but it can be done.

What I am wondering is if something changed so that is no longer needed. It seems that way to me now.

The MG line is only necessary if you want skills like Meteor. And really, if you read every book you come across you don't ever have to do the actual quest line anyway (which is good for me on alts as I really have no use for Sheo....) And honestly, the books are so far from a pain I can't believe people keep saying that.

Books are everywhere. When you find one, read it. By the time you've got through the MQ and your faction MQ, you'll be nearly to MG 8. Clearing two or three more zones of books will get you MG 10, it's not difficult. Certainly not rocket science.

The main questline used to stop coming, up until a few weeks ago at least, if you didn't have the main questline to 5. I needed to get to 5 in Mages Guild to get those quests to start coming then.

I have no idea what's going on there then. I don't play console, so don't know if that's an issue only on console.

But seriously, since 1Tam, the MQ does NOT need you to get five levels before the prophet starts yanking your chain. Right now, on PC, I can run a new toon through the first prophet quest at level 4, and by the time I'm done with that, she'll be level 5, and the MINUTE she wayshrines somewhere, the second quest pops - that's the "walk with me through my memories" one. And the MINUTE she's done with that one and wayshrines somewhere else, Daughter of Giants pops.

And that's on any new toon - believe me, they don't have any MG anything going on at that point.

Mage Guild has NEVER been tied to main story in any way.....

As people have already said the only change to main story is it is no longer locked behind levels.... you can literally do one quest, leave Harborage and next quest will pop.......

In Glenumbra as you enter Daggerfall from leaving Harborage the prophet will appear on the steps :)

Yeah. In fact, I just ran a new character through all the prophet quests to the point where his next stop is Coldharbour.

Yes, as it would send you to various zones who had higher level requirements.
With one tamriel this was dropped and the prophet keeps annoying you right after each quest stage.

Mage guild level was never required, it might felt like that as you picked up books while doing zones.

Grinding just make you go in circles.

That is completely false. I had several characters that could not get one of the chain until I leveled the Mages Guild (via lorebooks) to 5. It simply did not show up until then. This happened on more than 1 of my alts.

Not true, it was once 100% tied to getting to a certain level in the mages guild. Having said that the requirement changed a long time ago, either with one Tamriel or slightly before. Back in the VR days it was definitely a requirement to get the final prophet mission happening.

Think most don't notice as you will collect enough books questing up to the level there the quest unlocked.

Oh and wanted to add that once you read all the books in one entire Alliance, you are pretty set for the other two except for very specific ones and I don't believe I've had to bother with any in the latest Chapters/DLC.

It didnt really mater as you kill enough for fighters guild, read enough for Mages guild as you progessed, as all 3 were tied to moving to the next zone

I am on console and literally started a new stam toon yesterday. I finished off yesterday at lv16 and I’m half way through the MQ right now. Just finished the Tharn Speaks and received the next quest marker for the Halls of Torment.

I didn’t even unlock MG until lv10 and only did so only for the persuade skill.

For the OP there are certain quests that do get locked in the MQ if you happen to have certain prologue quests open. The quest I mentioned above “The Tharn Speaks” will be locked if you have the Elsweyr prologue quest “The Demon Weapon” in your quest log. You either need to drop the quest on complete it to continue the MQ. The reason it happens is because Abnar Tharn will be in the same place for both instances and the game can’t process this for some reason. It’s entirely possible that the Greymoor prologue quest is bugging the MQ for Lyris as well. I’ve also heard the Dragonhold prologue can bug the Sai Sahan instances on MQ as well.

From I started playing in late May last year and up until i did the MG quests the last time which was some time in March, you needed level 5 in the MG skill line to be able to do all the quests in the series and rescue Eyveya. Haven't done it since so can't say when, or if, they've changed it.
