Stroke Therapy and ESO: Two Years Ago, I had a Stroke that Paralyzed the Entire Right Side of my Bod

I’ve played ESO every day for five years, except for the month in 2018 that I spent in a hospital following my stroke. Well, I also took a week off three years ago to play through Horizon Zero Dawn. Other than that, it’s been every day on ESO.
In 2018, I had 12 characters on the PS4 NA server: 11 dps and one tank. I loved dps and played primarily in Cyrodiil. I was good at it. Not great, but good. At that time, I was 63 years old. My reflexes weren’t as good as the 12 to 25 year olds that seem to dominated in PvP, but I could hold my own. Prior to my stroke, I was one of the crowns in my guild. Directed battles. Used strategy to try to win campaigns.
But at 10 a.m., July 4, 2018, my life changed. With the stroke, I lost the use of the right side of my body. I had trouble thinking. My speech was slurred. Worst of all for a gamer: I couldn’t lift my arm. My right hand didn’t work. I spent the next 22 days working to get something back.
When I got out of the hospital, I couldn’t climb stairs, open a door or hold a glass. I couldn’t tie my shoes, yet the first thing I did was sign into the game. I had to do everything with my left hand. I used it to push the controller into my right hand to steady it, and I operated the buttons and trigger with my left hand. It was frustrating, but I could be online with my guild mates again. I talked to them while I did writs, or fished. There wasn’t much else I could do.
My son tried to convince me to use a one-handed controller to play the game. He even bought me a Scuf, a controller designed for people who are disabled, or able-bodied folks wanting to increase their play. But I didn’t like it. I didn’t want to learn how to adapt. I wanted to play.
I struggled for a few months. I fished. I did writs. I complained that I couldn’t dps.
Oh, I could go into a keep and dump a single oil pot. But I couldn’t PvP. Not really.
I was angry. Not depressed. Just angry.
One day, a guild mate convinced me to try something different. “Try healing.” he said. “We don’t have enough healers in Cyrodiil.”
At that time, everyone seemed to want to be dps, I figured I’d give it try. I converted a magicka templar dps to healbot and set out in Cyrodiil. And at first, I was awful. I had no idea how to be a good healer and hadn’t thought it through. But I could play. I spammed mutagen, healing springs and breath of life. It was enough for a little while.
But then I started thinking about it. How could I be a better healer, and still play with just one hand?
It started with champion points.
Something to note about playing with one hand and setting champion points. I can’t do heavy or light attacks, so recovery is the main issue. Whilethat makes the game more difficult, it makes it easier at the same time. My options are limited, but I can focus on what works best. I learned that I had to build a character around recovery, and I also had to think about what would make her stronger.
In addition, I can’t use ultimates that have to be aimed. I turned out that my best ultimates for my healer were barrier and war horn.
So I played the healbot for a year, trying to get my right hand to work again. And after that year, my thumb started working well enough to steer my horse and go in and out of stealth.I built four more healers - a nightblade, a warden and two templars. I also made four characters on the EU server - three tanks and a healer. And I converted one of my wardens on the NA server to a PvP tank. I liked her so much, I replicated her on the EU.
As my right hand regained some use, I stopped playing a healbot. I didn’t want to merely survive a battle. I wanted to be a better healer. I converted her to a crit healer, wearing Rattlecage and Mother’s Sorrow. Still tanky, but much better heals. My PvP tank is an ice warden. She’s built around the idea of locking people down in a breach.
The first year after the stroke was tough. I had to get used to playing one-handed both mentally and physically. I had to think about it - what gear, what champion points, which skills and monster sets.
Now, after two years, I’ve got it sorted out, and due to all that play, I’ve regained some use of my right hand. I still can’t dps, but I can move my fingers. Not enough to use the controller, but enough to hold a cup of tea, or open a door. I can solo most world bosses, and I’ve soloed some of the non-dlc dungeons on vet hard mode.
I don’t give up. I keep trying. And I figure that by the time I’m 68, I’ll have my dps main back in Cyrodiil.
I’m a Wardevil. Deedleqwerty on PS4, NA and EU. Find me in Cyrodiil.

Well done for persevering under such difficult times. I have chronic pain in my hands and the rest of my body, so playing can be extremely hard on bad days. My OT says that my gaming has probably kept my hands as mobile as they are 🙂 I can't weight bear so I have to have my controller supported by a pillow on my lap but I keep going. I'm not a great player but I'm a happy one. I only do PVE so I don't die too often 😂
It was lovely to read your inspirational story, thank you for sharing.

Really sad to hear about this, hopefully you will one day (soon) regain the full use of your right body side again. Health issues suck.

Gamers are some of the strongest and smartest people around! You seem to fall into this category. So game on, and keep trying whatever works for you.

Good for you! Don't ever give up! Not ever!

I didn't have a stroke, but I play every day due to being disabled myself. The game gives me a lot of distraction from the real life struggles.

Keep up the fight. You don't lose until you give up.

I have a good buddy (played eso for a while, but gamer since forever), that lost a lot of use in his right hand in a bad car accident. He had always played with a controller on console and PC. He was active in ESO on both PS4 and PC/NA.

He switched to a mouse/keyboard that really helped his mobility and aiming. On a controller, you really need your thumb to aim. On a mouse, you can palm the mouse and use more of your arm. It takes movement, but you dont need as much fine motor control.

Sure the best players probably don't play that way, but I know it worked for him. It also allowed for him to shift basically everything else to his left hand, which worked really well. He really only used the mouse for aiming the camera, and I believe block. He even did light attack with his left hand as far as I know. Just a thought.

I hope you continue to make progress, ESO is lucky to have you.

Good to see how you have come along.

I will say the healing was a good idea early on. I used to have a PvE raid healer, who also healed in PvP, that was essentially handicapped but was able to find ways as a healer to overcome and do a good job and we were doing leaderboard runs.

Sorry that happened to you, but awesome to see you found a way to play the game. I hope life treats you well. I also think it shows the importance of remembering not everyone can do high DPS etc. because they might have a disability preventing them from doing so

(Your story reminds me of a man who was paralyzed from the chest after a car accident, and to get a new hobby his therapist suggested video games)

All my best wishes to you!

I totally agree and have every empathy with the op as i have a similar tale, I suspect that like me this is one of the few forms of entertainment he has along with a great many other players world wide, and like me spend much of their time living in Tamriel. Which is why it is so frustrating that despite calls, plea's, and begs, along with millions of feed back items, Cyrodiil still has the worst performance ever. perhaps in the spirit of kindness this item can be shoved under the noses of the powers that be in the vain hope that they finally realise that to many this is an escape from real world pain and improvements would be oh so welcome

My cousin had a stroke at the young age of 44. He went through the same thing. That shouldn't happen to anybody. Glad you've found a way to still play.

    Good suggestion.

I have never used a product like this one handed keyboard, but I've heard that it's actually very easy to get used to them and much more intuitive that it seems at first.

Maybe something like this with a mouse would work better than a controller. There are other versions of one hand keyboards too, I'm linking this one only because it's the one I know about and a buddy purchased.

Thanks for sharing your story. I’ve seen you on the battlefield hundreds of times and would have never guessed the challenges you’ve faced. I honestly always thought you were the better player than those 12-25 year olds we compete with.

All i can say is keep pushing on and don’t ever let anyone including doctors tell you that you can’t do something. I’ve dealt with plenty of medical issues myself and Eso has probably saved my life so i can relate and hope you have a speedy and full recovery.

I'm so happy to see that you're not letting your difficulties stop you from doing what you love to do :) I can understand your feeling of anger for not being able to do things the same way, but I'm glad that you seem to be doing okay now. I really hope that over time you can maybe regain control over that part of you body. I just hope your keeping trying and find better ways to work around it. Thank you for sharing your story :)

What a fantastic story of adversity and the will to overcome it. Keep on pushing! I'll bet you keep improving even though it is really slow and frustrating.

We never know who is behind the character and what challenges they face-- a good reminder and lesson especially for those of us that PvP
4 GOs, and General, and bunches of prefects etc-- all classes...I've wasted a lot of time in PVP over the last 8 years
